If bully-selling is about creating urgency, fear, or scarcity to make a sale, I'm all about hug-selling. Monica Miranda made an excellent post this morning about the issue with "bro marketing," and using scarcity and manipulation to push people into buying on sales calls. It got me thinking about my own approach to sales calls, which will henceforth be known as "hug-selling" (but not in a "call HR kind of way"). 🤢 Aggressive hard sells are gross. I run for the hills whenever someone starts trying one on me, and if that were the only way to build a business, I would be out quicker than you could say, "This offer expires in 55 minutes". Bully-selling isn't my jam, but even if those sales tactics worked flawlessly 100% of the time, here's why I still won't use them: 👉 I want my clients to be FUCK YES about working with me 👉 I want them to know that I genuinely care about them, not their credit card 👉 I want clients I can build long-term relationships with, not endless one-time customers A client that doesn't 🌟really🌟 want to be there will eventually: - Ghost you, or - Ask for a refund, or - Check out of really doing the work So I'll always choose attraction and authenticity over aggression and pressure to build my client list - even though it means slower growth. The benefits: - Clients attracted by your message are more loyal and tend to stick around and stay engaged. - Connections based on mutual respect foster collaboration rather than transactional relationships. - Authentic attraction means clients feel respected, not manipulated, and they trust your intentions and direction. - Happy clients will become your best free marketing and send their friends your way. If the hard sell style is working for you, have at it 👊 But if everything you hear about lead generation and "closing the sale" makes you want to barf or cry or barf-cry, remember there are other ways to reach people with your business. Unlike bully-selling, which pressures clients with fear and urgency, hug-selling invites them in with warmth and genuine connection. It’s all about respect and trust, letting clients make choices that feel right for them—like a warm hug instead of a hard sell. I believe showing up on camera is no longer about fitting a mold—and that’s a good thing. For too long, we’ve been told: You need to look polished and “perfect” to be taken seriously. You need a certain voice or accent to be seen as credible. You need to follow outdated rules to fit the “on-camera type.” But here’s what I’ve learned from my own journey and from coaching others: The world needs more diverse faces and voices in leadership. Authenticity creates trust—and it’s far more powerful than perfection. Confidence on camera isn’t about looking a certain way; it’s about showing up as you are. For me, showing up on camera has been about more than business. It’s been about: Embracing the things I used to feel self-conscious about—like my accent—and turning them into my superpower. Being an example for others who might not see themselves represented in leadership or in media. Creating space for more stories, perspectives, and voices to shine. And I’ve seen how this mindset changes the game for my clients, too. When they show up authentically, they: Inspire others to do the same. Build deeper, more genuine connections with their audience. Gain opportunities they never imagined—simply because they allowed themselves to be seen. Good things happen when you stop hiding and start showing up. You don’t need to be perfect to make an impact. You just need to be visible. So if you’ve been holding back because you don’t feel like you “fit the type,” here’s what I want you to know: Your voice matters. Your story is powerful. And there are people out there waiting to hear from YOU. Let’s create a world where every voice gets heard, every story gets told, and every face gets seen.
