For too long, B2B has been labeled as “boring” compared to its flashy B2C counterpart. But some of my favorite campaigns from this year are flipping that idea on its head: 1. "Murder in HR" by Caspian Studios and Wellhub A fictional podcast series mixing Hollywood-style storytelling with business content, earning over 1.1 million downloads in just six months. 2. "Ads That Work as Hard as You Do" by Amazon Ads A campaign connecting small businesses with relevant customers, driving a 26% increase in ad revenue for Amazon Ads. 3. "GetP@id" by Visa A video series helping creators turn passions into careers, complete with mentorship from industry pros. 4. "Signet on Air" by Signet Iconic air guitarists helped increase packaging sales by $2.3 million in Signet’s most successful campaign in 50 years. 5. "The Place to B2B" by LinkedIn A dancing panda and humor-filled ad showed how LinkedIn helps marketers connect with the right audience in a crowded space. Google just delayed third party cookie deprecation for the third time. My thoughts, and a link to the AdTech communities best humor on the topic. 1. Much of Google's AdTech ecosystem is built on cookies. So they aren't going to remove it without a strong competitive reason (like Apple did), or outside regulation forcing them. 2. Only 50% of website visits now offer cookies, so think about alternatives anyway. 3. The technologies exist to manage life beyond 3PC, but the investment cost/benefits don't outweigh inertia for most players in the ecosystem. 4. At LiveRamp, I was the Product Manager who built the cookie-less client side tag to track alternative IDs. Here are the cookie alternatives: 1. Fingerprinting - frowned upon, inaccurate, and illegal in many regions 2. MAIDs - blocked by platform players down the stack from the app/browser, such as carriers and device/app store companies (like Apple) 3. Emails and various forms of Oauth/repackaging the email - can be owned by the walled gardens, like, you guessed it: Google. Or sites and publishers need to implement proprietary logins (costly and inefficient for users) It's messy and where it gets messy, it can get funny. Click the link below for the humor. On Oct. 8, Disney and Kroger announced a deal that will give Boost With Kroger Plus members ($99 a year) a subscription of their choice to ad-supported Disney+, Hulu or ESPN+ at no extra charge; this summer, WBD pacted with grocery and food delivery service DoorDash, giving DashPass members ($96 a year) free access to the ad-supported tier of Max; in November, NBCU teamed with the similar service Instacart to give Instacart+ members ($99 a year) free subscriptions to Peacock; and Walmart continues to offer comp Paramount+ to its Walmart+ ($98 a year) subscribers. The streaming partnerships follow, of course, the original bundle of video and vittles: Amazon Prime. A Prime membership for $139 a year gets users Fallout, Thursday Night Football on Prime Video and a discount on focaccia (and other products) in Whole Foods stores. (Netflix, meanwhile, has dismissed the idea of bundling.) This is just one of numerous studies showing that "brand safety" is a myth. But the hard work is getting these findings out of our echo chamber and into the hands of the folks controlling the budgets. Or, more accurately, getting these findings to sway the emotions of the ones holding the budgets so they overcome their feelings about "brand safety" and accept the reality of the data? Because at the end of the day "brand safety" is nothing more than a construct in a brand owner's/manager's mind about what they do and do not want to see their ads next to. They don't use data to test and prove what is and isn't "harmful" to their brand. There are no studies showing actual harm done to brands by running in environments like news. "Brand Safety" is all about personal feelings, and this plays out daily in block lists. Go and scan any of these long-held, massive lists of words passed down from planner to planner like a beloved recipe book and you'll see the truth in them; that words get added in the heat of a moment, but never revisited or removed, and are left to languish and block perfectly good content long after whatever emotionally charged "brand safety" moment has passed. I'm not saying brand suitability isn't a valid topic. It is. It's "safety" that's the issue. Does Delta want to run next to content about a plane crash? Of course not, and I don't blame them, it's not suitable to talk about your friendly flight staff next to an article about a crash. It may not actually harm their brand, but it is in poor taste. And these alignments are nothing more than common sense. But to say that it's not "safe" for Delta to run next to political news, investigative reporting, and all manner of high-quality, factual, content is ridiculous as the data shows. Most readers are smart enough to know that just because Delta shows up next to a story about a bank robbery doesn't mean that Delta is pro-bank robbery. No harm is done to the Delta brand by supporting journalism and high-quality content. The data shows this over... and over... and over... and over... which goes back to my first point and question. Brand safety is not mathematical or logical, it's opinionated and emotional. So, how do we use this logical data to make a change to an emotional opinion?

The company indexes and analyzes 2.5B web pages a month to perform this function, which allows for better targeting based on a site’s content rather than the viewer. Under a typical audience targeting model, a user might go to an online tech publication and see an ad for a travel company that could feel out of place based on the site’s content, even if the user themselves is personally interested in travel. Contextual targeting that’s based on content, in contrast, would instead serve up ads more relevant to the tech publication’s purview. Notably, advertising based on content doesn’t require user data to work, making it more privacy compliant than previous models – and more actionable for the CTV landscape, where identity resolution was less robust even before the rise of signal loss. But video content is much more complex for AI models to analyze than text is, with more contextual factors at play. I cannot express how cool this is for Streaming TV ads. With this partnership, new sought after AMC audience strategies arise for brands, including my favourite: competitor conquesting audiences! Brands can now create audiences based off of retailer purchaser data, powered by Stackline Shopper OS, which provides many new AMC audience use cases. Not only that, but brands can now measure if their STV efforts are creating conversions on Amazon, their website AND in retailers with Gigi! But SPO had previously been less relevant to CTV. Even though streaming TV is rendered digitally, it has mostly been purchased via direct insertion order and not programmatically. In May 2023, Pubmatic estimated that 60% of CTV transactions would be bought manually over the year. As streamers make more inventory available programmatically and more adtech firms want access to lucrative CTV budgets, there is a growing risk of media spending getting eaten up by tech taxes and flowing to suboptimal inventory. The pathways between buyers and sellers in CTV are already complex: There can be up to 114 different supply paths to the same TV application, according to research from programmatic media buying firm MiQ, presented at AdExchanger’s CTV Connect event in March.
