Rutgers University is hosting the AI/GenAI CARTA SYMPOSIUM on Tuesday, May 14, 2024 on the Livingston Campus in Piscataway. Industry leaders will come together and engage in deep-dive discussions of data analytics innovation trends and challenges, and gain insights and opportunities in: Medical/Healthcare, Cybersecurity, Environment/Scientific and Accelerated HW/SW. Led by Rutgers University Department of Computer Science Distinguished Professor Dimitris Metaxas, the day long event will feature a host of industry experts and top ranked Computer Science Departments. ---- The Center for Accelerated Real Time Analytics (CARTA) is as a National Science Foundation (NSF) sponsored Industry and University Cooperative Research Center (I/UCRC). It consists of the following 4 independent sites: Rutgers University–New Brunswick University of Maryland Baltimore County Arizona State University University of Miami CARTA started its 5 year I/UCRC first phase in 2018. The motivation for CARTA is the lack of AI and Data Science methods and solutions for addressing the ever increasing amounts of industry-related data. The focus is on data sets that are massive, dynamic, complex and multidimensional. The goal of the center is to discover, develop and apply AI and Data Science solutions to industry problems such that the seemingly chaotic data and ensuing knowledge is transformed into industry products. On October 10, the Long Island High Technology Incubator (LIHTI) held its first-ever Stony Brook Venture (SBV) Challenge Pitch Competition. Twelve start-up companies were tasked with creating a ten-minute presentation describing their business to a panel of judges, then answering a round of questions to conclude their pitch. True to serving the Long Island and greater New York ecosystem, ten Stony Brook-based ventures, one SBU/NYIT-based venture and one Columbia University-based company competed in three tracks: Energy, Information, or Health. Dr. Monti’s lab specializes in biomedical data science, a broad field that integrates systems biology, machine learning, and bioinformatics approaches to investigate the molecular drivers of human disease, with the goals of advancing prevention and care. His lab has developed a cutting-edge technology for rapidly and economically screening thousands of chemicals for their ability to influence expression of virtually all cancer-related signaling pathways within human cells. Dr. Monti and his team have also focused on secondary prevention, that is, the identification of mechanisms of early (pre-malignant) transformation that may support early interventions that could prevent cancer from developing. In the second PennAITech webinar of the 2023-24 season, Professor Kathy Bowles, a respected figure in nursing and co-director at the Penn Artificial Intelligence and Technology Collaboratory for Healthy Aging, introduced Matt McCoy, Assistant Professor in the Department of Medical Ethics and Health Policy at the University of Pennsylvania. McCoy's presentation focused on the ethical responsibilities of companies handling personal data, a topic of increasing relevance in our AI-driven age. He discussed the current inadequacies in both formal and informal ethical standards surrounding data use and proposed a more robust ethical framework to guide companies. Key takeaways included the need for meaningful consent, the limitations of notice and consent protocols, and the importance of stakeholder engagement in shaping data policies. Interesting piece by #JAMA on the FDA's perspective on #AI in healthcare and biomedicine. It highlights how AI presents challenges but also great opportunities to impact health outcomes. The opportunities are immense as it relates to improving clinical research, drug discovery, drug development, clinical trial support, post-marketing surveillance, etc. What is essential however is the need to have optimized tools, regulation and established frameworks to ensure that AI models are safe and effective across diverse settings. This is an exciting time for ongoing AI innovation!

Kim, alongside Dajiang Liu, distinguished professor and vice chair for research in the Department of Public Health Sciences and director of bioinformatics and AI in the College of Medicine, are committee members. Penn State Institute for Computational and Data Sciences RISE engineers Daniel Asante Otchere and Justin Petucci helped support a team of Penn State University researchers and a team of physicians from the Penn State Heart and Vascular Institute on a project utilizing machine learning and existing electrocardiogram (ECG) data to help make more accurate predictions. The RISE team led the artificial intelligence and computational support, alongside the project's lead researcher, Ankit Maheshwari. The researchers had their initial pilot study published in the journal Heart Rhythm in September. The project, which has been ongoing since November, aims to develop novel algorithms for point-of-care, in-house use and for technology licensing. The team also is focused on taking the existing ECGs and creating a large database that could also be expanded to support larger projects to predict patient outcomes and improve patient care. The research has the potential to touch a variety of other heart-related application areas, streamlining diagnostic processes and reducing costs. The team was initially funded by a seed grant from Penn State Clinical and Translational Science Institute.
