🚨 🚨 🚨 I want to share a recent report for FY23 U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs expenditures. 🚨 🚨 🚨   The National Center for Veterans Analysis and Statistics (NCVAS) publishes the annual Geographic Distribution of VA Expenditures (GDX) Report. The GDX report provides a breakdown of VA expenditures for each major VA program at the state, county, and Congressional District levels. Of note:   #Texas is the #1StateInTheUS for total Veteran population with 1,534,356 (CA is #2 with 1,487,167).   Bexar County moved ahead of Cook County Government (@Chicago) to #5CountyInTheUS for total Veteran population with 156,023 Veterans (behind #1 Maricopa, AZ; #2 Los Angeles, CA; #3 San Diego, CA; and #4 Harris, TX; I believe we will surpass Harris County in the next 5yrs).   #BexarCounty was the #1CountyInTheUS for total VA expenditure to residents with a total of $2,400,929,000 (that's #BILLIONS; that's across all organizations that process claims for Bexar County residents, so includes us, VA, Texas Veterans Commission, DAV (Disabled American Veterans), Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), etc.)   Bexar County brought in #MoreCompensationAndPension** (see below) money than 33 states / territories in the US!!!   Needless to say, I'm proud of the work this team at Bexar County Department of Military and Veterans Services does for the great people we support in the great community where we live.    Much thanks to the County leadership for the support you provide to us on a recurring basis, and kudos to the great community partners we get to work with on a daily basis! FSRS.gov Retiring March 2025 - Subaward Reporting to be in SAM.gov — The FFATA Subaward Reporting System (FSRS) is the reporting tool Federal prime awardees (i.e. prime contractors and prime grants recipients) use to capture and report subaward and executive compensation data regarding their first-tier subawards to meet the FFATA reporting requirements. The U.S. General Services Administration’s Integrated Award Environment today announced that it will be retiring FSRS.gov and bringing subaward reporting functions online in SAM.gov in March 2025. This effort is the next step in the ongoing work to transition disparate systems used for navigating the federal awards cycle into one streamlined, unified SAM.gov system. It will result in a significantly improved user experience for those who report data about subwards. This change will primarily impact FSRS.gov users who report on subaward information and executive compensation data, as well as anyone looking for subaward information on SAM.gov (also available at USASpending.gov). SAM.gov Entity Administrators (who may or may not be involved with subaward reporting) will also be impacted. Entity administrators will have to grant a new role to people who report on subawards and are new to SAM.gov, as well as to current SAM.gov users who report on subawards but do not have the appropriate permission for the new capabilities that are coming. If you do not engage in subaward reporting, searching, or role management this transition will not have a significant impact for you. This change is happening to make interacting online with the acquisition life cycle easier, more intuitive, and more modernized than it is today. The Maryland Department of Commerce has received a $1.06 million federal grant to launch the Resilient Maryland Defense Communities program. The program, funded through the United States Department of Defense Office of Local Defense Community Cooperation, aims to help the state and communities partner with local military installations and departments to support the long-term viability of military installations. Maryland will partner with the military, local defense communities, and various state agencies driving resilience planning in the state, including the Maryland Department of Emergency Management (MDEM) Office of Resilience and the Maryland Department of Planning, who will play key supporting roles in this project. Military resilience is the capability of a military installation to avoid, prepare for, minimize the effect of, adapt to, and recover from extreme weather events, or from anticipated or unanticipated changes in environment. If an installation’s mission is threatened, this could not only have impacts on the defense community as a whole, but could also greatly impact the regional economy by affecting employment and businesses that make up the regional defense industrial base. #military #resilience #defense #onecommunity

This week, the FEMA National Advisory Council’s leadership team gathered for our mid-year check-in. This is one of the most critical steps in our process because it marks the half-way point between our research phase and the recommendation-development phase. It’s one of my absolute FAVORITE meetings of the year. We challenge ourselves and our research to an (almost) exhausting level of scrutiny, and we make sure: 1) We’re researching and recommending solutions to emergency management’s most pressing problems. 2) We’re asking the right questions. 3) We’ve challenged ALL assumptions, biases, and opinions. 4) We’ve prioritized and integrated the concepts of equity throughout our entire research. And 5) We triple check that we’ve engaged the right experts, read the most current articles and reports, and that no stone has been left unturned in our research. Critical thinking, challenging one’s own assumptions and biases, and focusing on the right problems to solve… are things that fill my bucket. I thoroughly enjoy spending time with my colleagues on the NAC, and it’s been one of the most rewarding experiencing of my career. Thank you to my colleagues who have made this journey so memorable.
