Car Dealer Shipping 3-Day Window: Pricing Out The Process For Real ROI "Instead of looking at the lowest cost, it's 'What's my total cost based on the amount of time it takes to get it picked up, delivered, PDI'd through the reconditioning process, photo sets, final photo sets, Fixed Ops, finally marketed on the website (wherever they're going to market), and then finally to the consumer.' And you've talked to dealers. They say, 'Well, we've got three days that we want to have it, from purchased, to fully marketed.' And the way that we're set up now - it simply can't happen. Exciting how AI can take accountability in the core activity of Transportation: driving. Aurora is testing their autonomous self driven prototypes on TX; safety still one of the main concerns. In my opinion, as in any other innovation, it is a matter of get hands into action in any shades of gray environment, instead of waiting for pure black or white: if trial results shows that this vehicles are safe enough to do long hauls on highways, but not the final approaches into human density areas, let them perform what they do good, learn quick from it, and continue improving what it's still missing. “Who makes the most money?” My coworker asked after I provided a full truckload estimate. And I wasn’t quite sure how to answer. You’d hope it’s the driver, but they’re the ones actually putting in the road time. If that driver doesn’t own their truck then they’re splitting the money with the owner. If they have a dispatch then they’re taking a cut as well. Easiest answer is the broker since they’re getting paid just because they know me. But who knows, they could be set up all sorts of ways with money getting spread out all around. #supplychain #logistics

Carriers Choose Shippers (Not Driven By Brokers) On Auto Hauler Exchange 💥 "And then I'm here in Metro Detroit, and I see auto hauler after auto hauler driving with 4 or 5 empty spots on their trailer. So my mindset was, 'Let's just open up every opportunity.' 🚗 If I can have access to see 15 other shippers (in that market), I'm going to have the ability to fill out my truck, and allow my drivers to generate more revenue by maximizing the capacity on their trailer. In the broker model, if I've got one shipper that I'm partnered with, I'm going to block other opportunities until I get that shipment. 👀 I don’t care if that truck’s full or not; brokers can say what they want. That’s not their main concern. Their main concern is making a profit on that singular shipment. ⚡ What our marketplace provides for, is it allows the carrier to decide which shippers they’re going to work for (in every community that they operate in). There’s nobody telling them who they can and cannot work for. 🛑 There’s nobody telling them, 'No, you can only pick up 2 cars from this shipper, and then you have to race over here and pick up 2 cars from this shipper, because I need those 4 cars picked up.' I work with logistics providers that have been in business 100+ years. I also built much of Flexport’s infrastructure over six years. The gap is more narrow than you expect. The main challenge we saw in the industry was that shippers wanted their freight providers to be proactive to challenges that arose. When Section 301 tariffs were announced, we wanted to make sure our clients and other applicable shippers were aware of the changes. When Ever Given crashed into the Suez Canal, we solutioned with both affected shippers, existing and net new. Knowing Flexport, they definitely reached out to every east coast shipper in advance of the ILA / USMX negotiations. At the core of what we built was a central command system. We indexed each shipper with their tradelanes, suppliers, and commodities shipped. In cases where we didn’t have perfect data, we guessed. When new disruptions arose in the industry, we referenced our database for relevant shippers so that sales could provide relevant messaging ASAP. Even if we reached out to shippers incorrectly or reached out to shippers who had a good go-forward plan, we were guaranteed to find shippers who felt abandoned during a crisis. Anyone can build the underlying infrastructure. This data is publicly available. Most companies have great subject-matter experts who want to help. You just need to put them together. Challenges are solved by people, not systems. But the systems should help your people allocate time to those who have the most need.

Hot take on RXO, Inc. acquisition of Coyote Logistics Makes a ton of sense. Coyote tech was out of date and RXO is best in class. That’s a area other bidders would have had to invest heavily in that’s solved. Also their ability to still service TFI International Inc. and XPO LTL business has great synergies for all three businesses. Moreover, the RXO/XPO family of companies have shown that biz integration is a core competency. They’re as likely as any company to actually realize the value (unlike most M&A efforts). Finally - this is the starting gun that a bunch of companies and firms needed to get the M&A markets in logistics moving again. 2H is going to be spicy 🥵

A variety of supply chain stories to pass along with no particular connections: * In the Axios story linked below, trucking AV firm Aurora reports that it raised another $483 million by selling another bunch of shares in the publicly traded company (Nasdaq: AUR). According to CEO Chris Urmson, this adds to their overall liquidity and will help fund the initial phase of driverless truck routes in Texas later this year. * Another supply chain tech company raised another $200 million in a Series C venture capital investment, bringing the value of Altana to "unicorn" status of $1 billion valuation (https://lnkd.in/grV9hCT6). Truckers are getting squeezed by a doom loop of rising costs and falling prices, and few are bold enough to venture a guess on when conditions might improve. The industry is grappling with a glut of capacity that was built up during the pandemic supply-chain crunch but is now out of whack with underlying demand trends. The hope heading into this year among large truckers was that smaller carriers who bought equipment at inflated prices — often with variable debt financing — would start to feel the pinch of higher interest rates and rising operating costs, and that would force out capacity and ease pricing pressures. Instead, carriers desperate for business are pushing rates even lower. In the meantime, large operators like J.B. Hunt Transport Services, Inc. and Knight-Swift Transportation aren’t immune from the inflationary pressures they’re hoping eventually knock out some of the excess capacity in the trucking market.
