On November 7, 2024, Granite Shore Power CEO Jim Andrews participated at the Business and Industry Association of New Hampshire Energy Symposium, offering valuable insights on the state’s energy landscape. During the panel, State of Energy in New Hampshire, Andrews discussed the critical need for reliable energy as New England retires traditional power plants and looks toward renewable solutions. “Our Merrimack and Schiller Stations are shifting to renewable energy parks, but this winter, fewer energy sources will be available—a real risk to stability,” shared Andrews. “Expanding energy sources is essential to lowering costs and ensuring a sustainable future.” To meet demand, GSP is investing in battery storage technology at Schiller Station, which will balance the grid by charging during low-demand times and discharging at peak hours. This effort supports GSP’s long-term vision for a resilient, clean energy future, alongside their landmark decision to end coal-fired operations in New England. A collaborative partnership with lawmakers and the community will be critical to delivering reliable power to the families and businesses of New Hampshire, now and into the future. National Fuel works hard to be a responsible and engaged corporate partner within the communities that we serve. In addition to safely and reliably distributing natural gas to more than 2.1 million people throughout Western New York and Northwest Pennsylvania, National Fuel is also committed to being a cost-effective energy source for consumers. Within the Utility’s New York and Pennsylvania service territories, the Company provides natural gas service to approximately 93% and 84% of households, respectively. In New York and Pennsylvania, 83% and 73% of our Utility customers, in turn, use natural gas for heating. With the poverty rates in our areas being above the national average, it is important to remember that natural gas has consistently ranked as our service territories’ most affordable energy source. A cost-effective energy solution, natural gas is 3-4.5 times less expensive than electricity, and has a delivery reliability rate of more than 99.99%, helping families and businesses keep the natural gas and heat flowing, even during cold winter temperatures and severe weather events. The Company strives to maintain affordable delivery rates while limiting the frequency of requested delivery rate increases. Through effective management of our utility systems, National Fuel has been able to limit the occurrence of delivery rate increases. A study published by the Energy Information Administration demonstrated that in 2022, the Utility had the lowest residential delivery rate in New York and Pennsylvania and the second and third most affordable total bills, respectively, in the entire northeastern United States. Through various payment assistance programs, the Company has additional ways to help customers who may be struggling to pay their natural gas bills. In addition to state and federally funded programs and initiatives, National Fuel offers budget and deferred payment plans to stabilize customer bills, encourage timely payments and assist with maintaining uninterrupted service. Our Customer Service Team is able to connect eligible customers to programs and resources that may ultimately make their natural gas bills affordable, despite their financial circumstances. Customers are always encouraged to contact National Fuel if they struggle with their bill to see for which programs they may qualify. Exus Renewables North America has begun the repowering of the 139 MW Twin Ridges Wind Farm in Somerset County, Pennsylvania. The Twin Ridges repowering project involves replacing the nacelles and blades of the existing wind turbines while retaining the towers and foundations. The repowering will result in a 30% increase in energy generation for the project. “As the wind energy industry faces increasingly complex obstacles to growth, including a nearly 3 GW interconnection queue of renewable energy projects trying to connect to the grid, repowering has become a path to help meet clean energy goals,” said Jim Spencer, CEO of Exus Renewables North America. “Thanks to these upgrades, the Twin Ridges project will generate clean, reliable and renewable power – and millions in community investment – to the region for decades to come.” Exus Renewables will invest approximately $200 million in the project, creating 150 union construction jobs. It expects to inject over $7.35 million into the local economy through the procurement of materials and services from local suppliers and anticipates that over the 30-year life of the project, more than $100 million will be invested in the community through tax and landowner payments. Vestas-American Wind Technology, Inc. will supply American-made nacelles, hubs, blades, and tower adaptors for the project. #cleanenergy

Today, let’s dive back into discussion on New York’s energy policy and touch on some positive news out of Albany, which is that the Affordable Gas Transition Act and the NY HEAT Act were not included in the final 2025 New York State budget that was passed on April 19. However, the legislative session will continue through June 6, and there is still work to be done. Your voice is more important now than ever, as Governor Hochul and Albany elected officials to continue to debate policies that could have a serious impact on how Western New Yorkers live, how our businesses operate, and the affordability and reliability of our energy sources. An article published this week by the Times Union discussed some of the items that didn’t make it into the budget but are expected to be debated on through the remainder of this legislative session, including the NY HEAT Act, which would get rid of the “100-foot rule,” limit utilities’ “obligation to serve” and provide the NY Public Service Commission (a state agency) the power to curtail portions of the gas system. As New Yorkers, particularly Western New Yorkers who endure regular chilling temperatures and substantial winter snowfall annually, we should continue to express our concerns to policymakers about the importance of energy affordability, choice, reliability and resiliency. Our State should be considering energy policies that balance these key elements while responsibly incorporating emissions reductions options. This article discussion flies in the face of the market PJM has created. A market that only supports short term assets like wind and solar backed up by gas or batteries. In short it confirms the market flaws that have been claimed by utilities over many years, and should encourage support for creating market signals to create long lived assets like baseload generation plants.
