How I achieve high quality remote podcast productions EVERY time (with some budget options thrown in): 1. USE A PRO PLATFORM - I’ve used both Riverside and Squadcast with great results. These platforms enable you to have individual video and audio files for each person *and* they record locally so the quality isn’t impacted by sketchy internet connectivity. GET OFF ZOOM! Zoom does you zero favors in the quality department as far as recording is concerned. 2. MICROPHONE - I use a Shure SM7B, which is now considered “industry standard” for podcast recording. It’s not cheap though. At almost $500 it can be a stretch. There are lots of affordable options. I have a RØDE NT-USB Mini mic as a backup. It’s $99 and sounds stellar. There are options for any budget. *Fun Fact: The Shure SM7B was THE vocal mic for Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” Album* 3. VIDEO - I’m using a Fujifilm XT-3 Mirrorless camera run into an Elgato Camlink 4k capture card in my studio. But, I also had these pieces laying around. If you’re looking for a budget option, pull out your iPhone. The camera on newer models is amazing for what it is and will integrate seamlessly (and wirelessly) with Mac OSX. 4. LIGHTING - I run a creative studio, so I have high quality lights. Most everything is from Aputure since that’s what I like. In a pinch, getting close to a nice big window helps. 5. EDITING/POST-PRODUCTION - In full transparency, I feel like my unfair advantage is my background in professional audio. I worked in recording studios for years. Lately I work in Adobe Premiere or Pro Tools (if audio only) and use a selection of plugins from FabFilter, Sonible & iZotope. However, you don’t need anything fancy. Lots of programs have excellent plugins included with them. If you want to brush up on some audio-post skills, I would look up YouTube videos on EQ, Compression and De-Essing - it’s worth the time investment. I would be remiss if I didn’t touch on AI here…it IS 2024 after all. Here’s the deal: There are GREAT AI tools out there that will get you out of a pinch. I’m such a stickler for audio quality and, let’s face it, sometimes guests have less-than-ideal audio. Tools like Studio Sound built into Descript and Adobe Podcast are magical when it comes to cleaning up bad audio. I have even used plugins with AI components that get you CLOSER to a final mix QUICKER but, in my opinion, you still need to put in some work and nothing will ever replace starting with a good quality recording. This is just a quick overview of tools I use and how you can get similar results on a budget. I could go much much deeper. Based on this, what do you want to know more about? ‼️ This is so important. There is the fake media narrative about "the massive wave of cord cutting" and how linear TV is essentially dead and the only people watching are senile, poverty-stricken or both. 🛌 As the survey Evan Shapīro just published (details below) indicates, this is not true, as it shows that hard-core TV watchers are still mostly on linear. Ask anyone placing advertising where most TV advertising still winds up. 🍁 BUT... as I told the audience at CTAM Canada on Wednesday, it would be delusional to think we were ever going backwards--streaming is here to stay and it is the future. Cord cutting may not be a "massive wave" but it's happening, in larger percentages each year. And the audience for linear TV is indeed getting older and poorer. That said, it will be up to the industry to figure out how to keep streaming-era TV front and center and with the same prominence it had in the entertainment ecosystem. No small task at a time when there are so many options and where, for most people under 40, the notion of "come home and turn on prime time" is not an ingrained habit. 📺 Or, for many, even in the list of possible options.

“Mid TV, on the other hand, almost can’t be bad for some of the same reasons that keep it from being great. It’s often an echo of the last generation of breakthrough TV (so the highs and lows of “Game of Thrones” are succeeded by the faithful adequacy of “House of the Dragon”). Or it’s made by professionals who know how to make TV too well, and therefore miss a prerequisite of making great art, which is training yourself to forget how the thing was ever done and thus coming up with your own way of doing it.” This is a thoughtful encapsulation of the conversations I’ve been having the past few years with people who make TV. Economics played a huge role in the rise of TV as art in the past 20 years, and it’s part of the pullback towards the safe and competent fare of today. Always there’s some snobbery here - not sure the Times critic uses the word middlebrow but that perspective has always been there on the medium. “I don’t watch TV” was a common catchphrase of intellectuals in the 80s and 90s but seemed head in the sand in the age of the Sopranos, The Wire and, more recently, shows like Homeland and Billions. But when you look at what people really watch these days, well - we are back to the era of turn your brain off, but not quite the “idiot box”. In commercial over the air TV you didn’t want people to have too strong an emotional reaction because they wouldn’t stay tuned for the commercials. Quick Tip: The Importance of Monitoring Levels Content: "Happy Tuesday! Today’s quick tip is all about monitoring levels. Whether you’re recording voiceovers, podcasts, or any kind of audio, keeping an eye on your levels is crucial. Here’s why: Prevent Clipping: Monitoring levels ensures you’re not recording too hot, which can lead to clipping and distortion. Always aim for a level that gives you headroom. Consistent Quality: By keeping your levels consistent, you avoid having to fix volume issues in post-production, saving time and maintaining quality. Accurate Playback: Proper levels allow you to hear the true sound of your recordings, helping you make better decisions during the mix. Remember, clean levels = clean audio. My go-to meter is iZotope Insight—it’s probably overkill for your day-to-day podcaster or voice actor, but if you’re looking for something a bit more accessible, I’d recommend Dorrough from Waves or the Waves VU meters. These analogue-modelled meters are great for maintaining consistent levels without getting too technical. How getting laid off from my entry-level digital video producer job led me to become a TV executive producer within 2 years: In 2020, I got laid off and was collecting unemployment. I had to make a decision: A. Get another job at a company ("not risky"). B. Make my side hustle film projects my full-time gig ("risky"). I decided to take the risk and go 100% all-in on my film projects for a year straight. I downgraded my living situation, cut expenses, picked up part-time work when necessary, and dedicated my time towards building a body of work. 1 year later, I sold the original film concept for what is now my first unscripted TV show on Prime Video & Amazon Studios. Every rejection is a lesson. It forced me to re-evaluate, adapt, and figure out a way to keep going. The REAL risk was staying at a job that wouldn't value or promote me for years. Behind the scenes of the @brawlstars @supercell session for the new Frost Queen Amber! For all you brawlers, do you recognize some of Amber’s icy lines? ❄️❄️🍦🧊🍨🇫🇮 Some interesting tidbits about this session: 1. My recording booth is -60 decibels which means no background or outdoor noises will bleed through interrupting the session. 2. For younger, zany, loud animation scripts, it’s advisable to step back a bit from the microphone that way you don’t “clip” or distort your wave lines in the final .wav file. 3. I never speak directly into the mic, I usually speak on a 20 degree axis or speak just past the mic to avoid pops or plosives. 4. The booth tends to get quite hot because of all the soundproofing insulation, so I have to wear cool clothing when recording especially for an animated session like this where there is a lot of physical movement. #brawlstars #supercell #gaming #bs #mobilegame
