Something I've learned over the years: your impact as a PM grows most when you deeply understand what you can't control, not what you can. Many product managers naturally gravitate toward refining processes and perfecting frameworks—the tools directly within their control. While these help, the greatest leverage comes from understanding the things outside your control: the market dynamics, technology shifts, and industry forces that shape the playing field. The internal processes are the game plan, but the external forces dictate the rules of the game itself. Master the rules first, then optimize how you play. The best PMs I've worked with tend to spend a disproportionate amount of time focusing on these three areas. 🌎 The market. Dive deep into how your market dynamics actually works. Study your customers' businesses—their earnings calls, regulatory challenges, competitive landscape, and strategic initiatives. Know the latest trends shaping decisions. Understand the differences by segment. You'll spot opportunities others miss. 🔬 The domain. Learn your customers' craft. If you're building developer tools, study system architecture. Marketing software? Learn campaign analytics. Financial products? Understand accounting standards. You don't need to become an expert, but you should speak their language fluently. Innovation comes when you truly understand the challenges of their craft. 📊 The business. Know your company P&L. Understand GTM motions and where the gaps are. Build strong opinions by studying pricing strategies, go-to-market trends, corporate finance, and diving deep with your customer-facing teams. These fields help you think about product problems in a more tangible way, and you'll more naturally align with company strategy.

Wednesday musings on a recent session between Segment VP of Product & UX Robin Grochol and David Raab, Founder and CEO of the CDP Institute. What’s really clear to me: CDPs are increasingly becoming enterprise-wide tools managed by IT and data teams rather than just marketing. Why? Because great companies put their customers at the center of their decisions.. and customer data is essential to nearly every team. IMHO customer data is the great unifier of company silos and CDPs can be used to unify disjointed tech stacks. Removing barriers between teams has never been more important to meet and exceed customer expectations and track the ROI of your efforts.

For the past few weeks, Daniella Vainberg and I have been meeting with product leaders across every vertical and level who are preparing to take the next step in their career. These are data-informed, highly-motivated, and extremely accomplished product managers who've launched features that generated millions of dollars for their companies, made massive impact in every role they've taken on, and are beloved by their teammates. And despite this, they're facing the same issues we hear from everyone in tech: Laid off as part of a department shutdown. Even with referrals, not getting a callback. Not considered for roles that are exact copies of their past experience. Unsurprisingly, it can be demoralizing. We started hosting group interview prep sessions to share insights and learnings, and our first five events sold out almost immediately. The feedback we've received has validated our assumption: we all could benefit from practice, but more importantly we need the connection and community.
