Responsible for equities research on the sub-Saharan African telecommunications sector including producing detailed national studies of policy and regulatory developments, in-depth company analysis and providing advisory services to support effective implementation of equity capital market and corporate finance transactions in the telecommunication market. I was recruited by JP Morgan Chase specifically for my telecommunications knowledge and expertise, and was engaged to be directly responsible for all of the equities research input and output for the listing of Telkom South Africa on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange and the New York Stock Exchange, which JP Morgan managed as the Joint Global Coordinators. As the equity telecoms analyst responsible for Sub-Saharan Africa, I managed the interface between the South African office and a global JP Morgan team including Equity Capital Markets, Corporate Finance, Global Telecoms research, legal counsel, public affairs consultancies and the media. This project management exercise was complex and intricate and was subject to the rules governing stock market transactions on the New York Stock Exchange which are very demanding. My sojourn at JP Morgan Chase provided hands on involvement in the detailed aspects of the stage of privatisation of telecom companies through capital markets, and a depth of understanding of the interaction between multiple objectives of governments, public sector telecom companies and other stakeholders as telecom markets are liberalised. My responsibilities as an equity analyst also involved analysing and interpreting regulatory decisions for institutional investors and making assessments of the impact of policy and regulatory institutions on investment decisions in developing countries.
