The challenge has been and continues to be, DAS has been overused and acts as a HAMMER to solve for use cases it is not a good fit for. Innovation continues to be somewhere between slow and non-existent, embracing value creating solutions is marginalized, and we continue to look to the next technology evolution (5G, 5G Advanced, 6G, #6Greset) to solve the problem that has been facing the Enterprise for the last 10 years. Protecting revenue, margins, growth, network differentiation, etc., etc., etc. are the justifications for continuing the failed model, all while continuing to perpetuate the issues that work against everyone’s best interest. 🔮 Where are Network APIs going? As the year comes to a close, it’s a good time to revisit 5G and Network APIs developments. 🔹10 months ago, Ferry C. Grijpink and his team at McKinsey estimated that network API revenues could reach $100–$300 billion within five to seven years, with $10–$30 billion directly from APIs and the rest from connectivity and edge-computing services. 🔹In October, Adam Mackenzie of Omdia forecasted API revenues rising from $161 million in 2023 to $8.7 billion by 2029, driven primarily by subscriber identity APIs like Number Verification and SIM Swap APIs. 🕸️ The industry recognizes that APIs are everywhere: some are already exposed and available to B2B customers, others are hidden and waiting to be published, and some are forgotten but not disabled. 🔴 In mid-2024, GSMA launched the Open Gateway portal to track available network APIs globally. This "storefront" is a brilliant initiative to promote usage and now features an updated interface with a table-like format for easier navigation. However, the latest updates revealed something surprising: 🔸A few months ago, there were 52 MNOs from 27 countries listed. 🔸Now, only 38 MNOs from 23 countries remain - a 27% drop in participation. Where did these MNOs go, and why? Hopefully, the next update will see a rebound, with even more operators joining. 🤓 Meanwhile, I’m still playing the role of a semi-interested developer, exploring these APIs in search of a sandbox environment to test them for my fintech startup, destined to be a unicorn. For example, I’d love to find a solution to my KYC headaches. Now it’s one step closer for me - the Open Gateway portal suggests direct links to MNO pages with guidelines for developers. Ericsson unveils a new #ConsumerLab research report that highlights a powerful trend: #5G is transforming event experiences, with a 20% higher share of 5G users reporting satisfaction with their connectivity compared to 4G users. The report also reveals that users are becoming increasingly discerning about their connections, prioritizing app quality and reliability 10 times more than speed alone. This shift in user preferences correlates with evolving traffic patterns at events, where data use now peaks dynamically with live-streaming and content sharing – levels only high-capacity 5G networks can support smoothly. As demand continues to grow, attendees are even willing to pay extra for a seamless experience, which is a good example of why high-performance programmable networks is the future. By enabling differentiated connectivity, operators can create tailored network experiences for different user needs – even in the most demanding scenarios – thereby opening up new avenues to monetize their networks’ capabilities. I think #6G will need a complete rework of the idea of localised roaming and network interconnect. There will be multiple scenarios and greater frequency of devices switching to alternative networks from an MNO, or connecting to other users locally. This fits the #6Greset concept. There are two sets of scenarios, with some overlap: 1) User switches to (or combines) a local network, for improvements in coverage, performance, cost, energy use or privacy 2) User connects to another user or resource locally "at the edge" without traffic going via a distant point. This improves latency, congestion, coverage etc as well. Some use-cases and scenarios: - Local roaming & federation onto indoor #WiFi for better coverage, lower energy consumption and (often) reduced latency to cloud-based applications - Local interconnect with 3rd party networks such as #neutralhost for urban densification, remote / rural and indoors - Both roaming and local interconnect between public and private #5G / 6G networks at a site - for instance for IoT devices moving outdoors from indoors - Local breakout or local interconnect between two different MNO networks, for instance for low-latency communications or gaming between two users at the same venue - Direct device-to-device (or "sidelink") connectivity, for instance for sending files and images/video locally in a similar fashion to AirDrop or casting to a TV. Also for public safety and #V2X at longer ranges - Direct peering (and perhaps radio coordination) between Wi-Fi networks, or between #private5G networks - either locally or as federations - Extending a device's Wi-Fi hotspot capability to offering a 5G / 6G local hotspot in unlicensed spectrum - Localised use of satellite or HAPs connections in particular regions (eg small dead zones) - Various proximity-sensing and positioning use-cases - Alternative local technologies such as Bluetooth, UWB, light - even USB cables - Links to #edgecomputing, #NetworkAPIs and AI A lot of different things will get blended into each other here. Arguably this is actually multiple categories, with a plethora of standards involved. But what I'm seeing is a "superset" of localised network events. There's no real parallel in #5G. That has lots of architectural and regulatory implications. Are any of these things billable? Does lawful intercept apply, and if so where and how? Is the 3GPP core involved, and if so, for control or user planes, or both? What about shared #OpenRAN CU & DUs? What happens if there's a conflict between (say) energy efficiency and privacy, or coverage vs. regulatory control? How much is driven by device or OS connection managers, vs the network(s)? Will there be huge volumes of signalling? This is outside traditional #mobile & IMT / #5G thinking. Some big announcements this week related to the use of #AI in Telco Mobile Networks. Timing couldn't be better as Spectrum Effect was just this week awarded the patent for the use of AI and Machine Learning Models for classifying interference types in Mobile Operator RAN networks. I have strong conviction on AI's ability to drive more efficient and effective operations of mobility networks and ultimately better outcomes for consumers of the services that mobile networks enable. Mind the Gap....... The monetization gap is real, has existed for years and is arguably the main reason why telcos are on a path to commoditization. Continued over investment in new technology areas at the expense of seeking the maximum return from those investments. But something has changed. The plateauing of and in some cases the decline in mobile traffic levels creates an opportunity for a strategic re-think, a re-balancing of investment focus away from high capital intensity towards R&D, with much greater weight placed on the services consumers / businesses require and the network needed to deliver that. 𝐔𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐎𝐩𝐞𝐧 𝐑𝐀𝐍: 𝐑𝐞𝐯𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐳𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐌𝐨𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐞 𝐍𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬 Open Radio Access Network (Open RAN) is a transformative concept in mobile communications, aimed at creating a more flexible, interoperable, and cost-efficient RAN architecture. By disaggregating traditional RAN components and embracing open standards, Open RAN enables network operators to mix and match components from different vendors. 𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐎𝐩𝐞𝐧 𝐑𝐀𝐍 Radio Unit (O-RU) The Radio Unit is responsible for handling the radio frequency (RF) functions of the RAN. It includes elements like the antenna and the transceiver, which facilitate communication between the mobile devices and the network. In an Open RAN architecture, the RU is designed to be interoperable with different vendors' Distributed Units (DU) and Centralized Units (CU). Distributed Unit (O-DU) The Distributed Unit manages the real-time processing tasks required for radio communication. This includes tasks like encoding, scheduling, and resource allocation. By placing the DU closer to the RU, often at the edge of the network, latency is minimized, improving the performance of applications requiring real-time communication, such as gaming and virtual reality. Centralized Unit (O-CU) The Centralized Unit handles higher-layer protocols and non-real-time functions. These include tasks such as mobility management, session management, and overall control of the data flow. The CU can be located centrally, managing multiple DUs and RUs, leading to more efficient resource utilization. Near-Real-Time RIC (Near-RT RIC) The Near-RT RIC is a critical component for enhancing the performance and efficiency of the RAN through real-time analytics and control. Operating with a latency of less than one second, it enables dynamic radio resource management, interference mitigation, and load balancing. This allows the network to adapt quickly to changing conditions, ensuring optimal performance. Non-Real-Time RIC (Non-RT RIC) The Non-RT RIC focuses on longer-term data analytics and policy-based control to improve the overall efficiency and performance of the RAN. It works on timescales beyond one second and is responsible for tasks such as machine learning model training, policy management, and performance optimization. Insights from the Non-RT RIC are used to inform the Near-RT RIC, creating a feedback loop that enhances the network's adaptability and intelligence. Service Management and Orchestration (SMO) The SMO platform oversees the end-to-end management and orchestration of the RAN and its associated services. It ensures that all components, including the RU, DU, CU, and RICs, work harmoniously. The SMO is crucial for automated network operations, resource allocation, and service delivery, facilitating the deployment of new services and the scaling of network resources. The future of wireless services of all types is likely to involve more spectrum-sharing and other more sophisticated approaches to #spectrum assignment and management. This applies to #5G, #6G, #WiFi, #satellite, audiovisual and various classes of aviation and martime networks, as well as government and defence usage. Sharing will occur based on multiple dimensions - location, duration, directionality, power and obviously frequency. That, in turn, will require a range of key enablers, including technological components such as spectrum databases, sensing systems, better transceivers, mapping tools, cross-technology signalling and much more. There will also need to be streamlined regulatory processes, spectrum marketplaces, and a whole variety of use-cases for AI + spectrum. There will also be a need for more international cooperation and (hopefully) eventual harmonisation. The evolution of spectrum-sharing is a central theme for me at the moment, and something that regularly crops up in my discussions with regulators, operators, vendors and investors. 6G: Telcos, Don't Just Slap a "G" on It and Call It a Revolution As a #telecom product VP, I've been through the trenches of AMPS, 2G, 3G, 4G, the ever-evolving #5G — and now #6G is knocking on the door. Each "G" comes with bold promises and even bolder marketing campaigns. (Remember when 3G was going to make video calls mainstream, but all we got was blurry faces and frustration?) Now, as we peer into the glowing promise of 6G, I can’t help but think: what can the industry do differently this time? The 3GPP standards body has 6G slated for "Release 21"; which should standardize 6G radio access network (RAN) by 2029. So on the ramp-up to 2029, here’s the thing: every "G" has obviously been a leap forward in connectivity standards, but let’s be honest—sometimes it’s about the hype instead of the purpose. With 6G, the industry has a chance to flip the script. Instead of just faster speeds or more connected devices (Does my coffee machine really need to DM a fridge?), let’s focus on real, #transformative use cases: - #Healthcare innovations that save lives. - Connectivity that bridges the #digitaldivide. - #Sustainable solutions that protect our planet.
