Editing pet peeve: the goofy obsession with the Oxford comma. Oxford enthusiasts—whom I often refer to as "Oxfordnistas"—insist that the serial comma is the ultimate arbiter of clarity and slayer of ambiguity. And they demonstrate this overstated power through a series of reductionist—albeit humorous—memes. Below on the left is one such example. Again, this meme assuredly suggests a moment where a lack of a serial comma may confuse readers. Rather than express a list of the three, the Oxford-less sentence seems to imply an appositive suggesting the exotic dancers are, in fact, Stalin and JFK. But what happens if you change strippers (plural) to stripper (singular). One good contrived strawman argument deserves another, right? On the right is the counterpoint. Here, the sentence with the Oxford comma introduces ambiguity. Is that JFK on stage three collecting singles, or is somebody else? The trick is simple: When in doubt, rewrite. "We invited JFK, Stalin and the strippers." See how this is clearly a list of three? See how I didn't need the comma to do so? Ultimately, the Oxford comma is a stylistic convention, so it is a matter of personal preference. You can also write, "We invited JFK, Stalin, and the strippers." That *also* works. Either way, stop pretending that your prescriptivist take on the Oxford comma is holy writ. #Oxfordcomma

𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗠𝘂𝘀𝗸 𝗦𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗛𝗮𝘀 𝗠𝗲 𝗛𝗼𝗼𝗸𝗲𝗱 – 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗼𝗯𝗼𝘁𝗮𝘅𝗶 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁 William Patalon III recently penned an 𝑎𝑚𝑎𝑧𝑖𝑛𝑔 analysis of Elon Musk's latest robotaxi reveal, and I couldn’t resist sharing my take on it. One of my favorite lines was when William described how short-term thinking can lead to “misteps … mistakes … and a Wealth Killer prison sentence without the possibility of parole.” That visual was 𝑠𝑝𝑜𝑡-𝑜𝑛, and it reminds me why I’ve got to adopt more of a long-game strategy in my life. Especially now that I'm past my own likely half-time show. The article had me cracking up with William's mention of the 𝑇𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝑅𝑒𝑐𝑎𝑙𝑙 Johnny Cabs (I 𝑙𝑜𝑣𝑒𝑑 that movie—the original, not the remake, of course!). It was the first thing that popped into my mind when I saw the Tesla robotaxi too. Now, I get that some folks were disappointed by the lack of hard numbers or immediate specifics at the event. But, honestly? That didn’t dampen my fervor for the future Musk envisions. I’ve been a Musk fangirl since the PayPal days (which, by the way, is the financial institution I’ve trusted the longest), and there’s not much he could do to lose my loyalty—except maybe Neuralink. I’m good with my original operating system, thanks! But a robot? AI systems routinely outperform humans, affirms the Stanford AI Index Report 2024; Should we be worried? There's hardly a day that goes by without someone speculating if AI systems like GPT-4, Gemini 1.5 Pro, Claude 3, and now LLaMA 3 are becoming sentient, the fear being that AI's intelligence, what we better know as artificial general intelligence (AGI) or artificial super intelligence (ASI), will exceed that of the most intelligent humans, making it a sort of Alpha Intelligence that may eventually even enslave humans. While #Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang proposed that AGI would emerge within five years, and Ben Goertzel foresees it happening in just three years, Elon Musk predicts that by the end of 2025 or early 2026, AI will be smarter than any single human, and probably smarter than all humans combined by 2029. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, too, has announced that his company is entering the race to make an AGI but did not provide any timeline. These are all credible voices and we must pay attention. But one also needs to pay heed to equally-accomplished voices like those of Yann LeCun, Andrew Ng, and Gary Marcus, who have begged to differ and have consistently tempered expectations in the context of AGI. Early this month, even Stanford University's seventh edition of the AI Index report weighed in on the same topic, insisting that AI systems like GPT-4, Gemini, and Claude 3 are "impressively multimodal" and "routinely exceed human performance on standard benchmarks". The report, however, qualifies that current AI technology continues to have limitations and cannot reliably deal with facts, perform complex reasoning, or explain its conclusions. What do you think? You might have heard a lot recently about Big Tech driving a nuclear energy renaissance. I feel like the nerdy kid who was just offered a seat at the cool kid lunch table. That's right, my little stock got an Nvidia mention in an article today. As the Artificial Intelligence trade continues this year, I'm long for it to go far and deep. Here's an article about Bloom Energy, the latest picks and shovels (energy efficiency) play for the picks and shovels (data centers) of AI. I'm not going to lie. I'm posting this message in the short term to celebrate this little dopamine hit, and for the long term to keep me humble and honest. Is this a structural change that will last, or will this trade tire and my money go the wayside of other hyped trends like the metaverse and 3-d printing? As this article from Avi Salzman of Barron's mentions, Bloom Energy makes solid oxide fuel cells, which operate like batteries but can last much longer. The cells can work using various kinds of fuels, from natural gas, to biogas, to hydrogen. They are packaged in containers that can be the size of refrigerators and operate on the site of a commercial or industrial plant. Their batteries are now being tapped for power-boosting in data centers by CoreWeave, an Nvidia company. Time will tell but I'm long BE.

I wrote about the new version of ChatGPT's voice assistant, GPT-4o, which can talk, laugh, interpret emotions and even sing. It's clearly modeled on Samantha from "Her," and it means that we are leaving the era of the dry, impersonal AI helper, and entering into much stranger territory. How will society change when AI voices can convince us they're human? Will we fall for our AI assistants, as Theodore does for Samantha? Or will other companies' more detached, less emotional chatbots carry the day? I wrote about the possibilities in The New York Times.
