Research Topic: AI for Prescriptive Maintenance. ECE faculty Dr. George Pappas, in collaboration with MRIE faculty Dr. Giscard Kfoury, are currently working on Phase II of their $410,000 Eaton project, "New approach to prescriptive maintenance: a quality control-based artificial intelligence algorithm that can predict when machines are going to fail." The first phase of the project involved faculty, students, and Eaton personnel examining and planning for two applications: injection molding and PCB manufacturing. This phase involves the implementation of prescriptive maintenance for injection molding at one of the Eaton manufacturing facilities and validation in a factory setting for PCBs. Researchers from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign have developed new, highly flexible sensors capable of monitoring and transmitting data on plant growth autonomously. The polymer sensors are resilient to humidity and temperature, can stretch over 400% while remaining attached to a plant as it grows, and send a wireless signal to a remote monitoring location. Chemical and biomolecular engineering professor Ying Diao, who led the study with plant biology professor and department head Andrew Leakey, shared the findings in a paper published in the Device journal. Purdue Polytechnic IN-MaC supported a research publication in the Journal of STEM Education: Innovations and Research titled "Exploring the Influence of Industry STEM Outreach on Career Perceptions Toward Manufacturing." You'll be able to learn more about the findings below. 🔽 🔽 🔽 🔽 This research examined how industry-led #STEM outreach affects children's perceptions of careers in manufacturing. ▶️ The results suggest that children have a #limited understanding of manufacturing, which may be due to their #associated learning experiences. ▶️ There appears to be a #disconnect between industry needs and educational activities. ▶️ However, the data indicate that the outreach likely #improved the participants' understanding and #perception of #manufacturing. Thanks to Greg Strimel, Liesl Krause-Klein, Ph.D., Sydney Serban, and Jackson Otto for their contributions. This research was also supported by the Wabash Heartland Innovation Network (WHIN).

🌟Thrilled to share my recent publication in the IEEE Journal on Flexible Electronics! 🌟 This is the second publication from the current affiliation, SGT UNIVERSITY. 📚 Our latest work, "A Proposed Fully Transparent, Flexible, and Compact Modeled Low Voltage TFT for Implementation of Full Adder and Subtractor", delves compactly modeled TFT for analyzing complex analog and digital circuits. 🎨🔬 In this article, a low-voltage, fully transparent, flexible thin film transistor (TFT) is simulated using the Silvaco-Atlas tool, in which a-IGZO (Indium gallium zinc oxide) and HfO2 are used as the active layers, gate dielectrics of the TFT, and ITO (Indium tin oxide) serve as the electrodes for source, drain, and gate contacts. Additionally, this TFT is compactly modeled and used in the implementation of full adder and full subtractor circuits through the Silvaco-Techmodeler and Silvaco-Gateway tools. The TCAD (Technology computer-aided design) simulated device has an operating voltage of 2 V and good performance parameters, such as a low threshold voltage of 0.104 V, high mobility (~ 8.9 cm 2 /V-sec), high I ON /I OFF ~ 10 5 , and a low subthreshold slope of 65 mV/decade. The Silvaco-Gateway tool is used for the execution of full adder and subtractor circuits. For all 8 inputs (from 000 to 111), it gives quite acceptable transient characteristics in analyzing corresponding outputs as sum, carry, difference, and borrow. ! 🚀 SGT UNIVERSITY #research #publication #TFT #dielectric #TCAD #simulation #HfO2 The early access can be checked here:-

This #FreePaperFriday I'd like to share a paper from my research group that just came out. Hugh Grennan, as part of his MS degree from Purdue University School of Materials Engineering, worked with Purdue alum Alexandra Burch, a staff member at Los Alamos National Laboratory to tackle a problem about how molecular crystals deform. Hugh looked at 10 different molecular crystals, with different structures and orientations. One thing that makes molecular crystals different than metals, ionic crystals, or covalently bonded solids is that that molecules aren't "just" spheres. So not only the orientation of the crystal, but the orientation of the molecule within the crystal appears to predict if a molecular crystal is easy or hard to initiate plasticity. https://lnkd.in/gSbb_GDt

Despite the growing popularity of participatory design, existing guidelines and recommendations for how to conduct participatory design sessions gloss over important details that can have a profound impact on how smoothly design sessions run and the extent to which they maintain rigor and generate actionable data. Furthermore, there are unique considerations that apply when the product of participatory design is a visualization rather than, say, text. Therefore, in an effort to address this gap and support others wishing to undertake participatory design work, our team has drafted a practical manual based on our collective experiences, complete with tips for iteration tracking, a session guide template, suggested design session prompts, a note-taking template, and a comprehensive preparation checklist. In this interactive tutorial, attendees will be introduced to the design session manual and related resources before practicing the techniques in small groups with static visualizations.

It's #FreePaperFriday, and here's a paper from Profs. Di Zhang and Haiyan Wang. Dr. Zhang was recognized at the Spring Materials Research Society meeting as an early career distinguished presenter highlighted in MRS Communictioons. We are proud of our former student as he starts his new faculty position at U. Texas Arlington. In this work they were able to create layered supercell oxides (atomically registered layers of a complex crystal structure) while incorporating either gold nanoparticles or a ferrite material. The key advance here was that you can get material properties (plasmonic or magnetic) that combine both the layered oxide and the nanoparticles behavior, making the whole greater than either part. Growing epitaxial films isn't easy, and keeping them epitaxial while you add "relatively" large inclusions (10 nm) wouldn't be expected. Of course, this did take a team to carry out the work, so it wouldn't be possible without the contributions of Jianan Shen, Jiawei Song, Xingyao Gao, Zihao He, Juanjuan Lu, Yizhi Zhang, Hongyi Dou and Ping Lu at Sandia National Laboratories. https://rdcu.be/dWFHq
