Switzerland has taken an important step in advancing technology with the inauguration of its first commercially available #quantum computer. The launch took place at the Uptown Basel competence center in Arlesheim. This quantum-powered breakthrough will empower businesses, startups, and academic institutions to explore new frontiers in simulation, optimization, and machine learning. The project is a result of an initiative by QuantumBasel, in collaboration with IonQ, a leading specialist in quantum #technology. The Forte system from IonQ, now operational at the center, is capable of processing over 34 billion possibilities simultaneously, paving the way for groundbreaking applications. The quantum computer is accessible both physically and via the cloud, providing secure and flexible opportunities for customers and partners to innovate and shape the future of technology. "The last 18 months have been brutal. Many startups that received high valuations during the 2021 boom are now struggling to survive." says Gina Domanig, Managing Partner at Emerald Technology Ventures in this Forbes Austria article. Yes, 2024 has been a tough year for many fledgling companies. But I am encouraged by some of the startups scaling disruptive technology and business models in service of accelerating the energy transition in India and across the Asia Pacific and Middle East. They will survive and thrive - with the support of a growing investor community who have come to appreciate that the global south possess truly innovative solutions. One of the highlights for me this year was the first Asia Climate Tech Venture Fair, held in Singapore in October. #Microsoft Microsoft announced a new agreement for the removal of up to 350,000 tonnes of CO2 from the atmosphere over ten years with marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR) provider Ebb Carbon. Founded in 2021 by former Tesla, SolarCity, and Google X executives, Ebb Carbon provides a solution aimed at enhancing the natural ability of the ocean to store CO2, while improving ocean health by reducing ocean acidification. The company’s utilizes an Electrochemical Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement (OAE) approach to ocean-based carbon removal that accelerates the natural ocean alkalinization process, by separating seawater into acidic and alkaline streams, with the alkaline stream returned to the ocean, where it mimics natural alkalization, converting CO2 in seawater into bicarbonate ions and enabling the ocean to absorb additional CO2 from the atmosphere. By countering rising ocean acidification resulting from climate change, the solution can also help to addresses threat to marine life and coastal ecosystems. https://lnkd.in/dUV6TEXt
