November 2024 Feature Paper #1 Brought to you by IEEE Open Journal of Vehicular Technology The growing adoption of #electricvehicles (#EV) is creating problems in integrating the EV charging infrastructure with the electricity grid. Uncoordinated charging can lead to overloading of transformers or lines, power quality problems and imbalances. The article - Comparison and Analysis of Algorithms for Coordinated EV Charging to Reduce Power Grid Impact - co-authored by Cesar Diaz-Londono, Paolo Maffezzoni, Luca Daniel, and giambattista gruosso, presents two intelligent charging coordinators per group of EV charging stations, with the aim of managing charging while taking into account the power limits of transformers, as well as other economic aspects. Both coordinators address uncertainties related to the arrival time of EVs, charging status and inflexible transformer demands. Real-world data sets were used to evaluate the performance of the proposed strategies through simulation studies on different scenarios. The comparative analysis shows that the flexibility maximisation strategy effectively mitigates transformer overload events. The study emphasises the importance of innovative charging strategies for seamless integration of electric vehicles and the need for coordinated charging pools for reliable charging operations. I started reading Home Energy Analytics, Inc. white paper on electrical panel utilization that reports that in their analysis 86% of the panels have max loads under 50 amps. This shows that most houses can make do with 100 Amp panels, but to me it also points out that our grid is committing to delivering more electricity than what most households need. In Europe it is common for an account to be billed for electricity through a fixed charge based on the maximum power that can be drawn from the grid, plus a volumetric, time-of-use, rate. Our (PG&E) smart meters (AMI) track our consumption and I believe can even limit the amount delivered to the house. Was the Max-Power + Volumetric approach discussed instead of the Income-Graded Fixed Charge? It seems a much more sensible solution on many fronts. In this discussion with #theCUBE + NYSE Wired, John Furrier hears from Bill Tai, Venture Capitalist at ACTAI Global, about the present and the future of grid architecture. “We moved from making pieces of silicon that could steer electrons locally to representing bits with electrons and moving them through a phone network. Now, we're going back to how do you move electrons in a gigantic, context-aware cloud and how to route the electricity inside? What we're going to see is something that is a software-based solution enhanced by AI and adds intelligence to a living network,” Tai shares. “The electrical packets are going to have some sort of an intelligence layer on it, a protocol,” he furthers, giving the example of a solar grid needing to push electrons into the grid. “The output's got to come out somewhere when it gets used, or it gets stored. Ecosuite, a SaaS provider of software tools for DER developers, asset managers and financiers and SolarNetwork Foundation, curator of a open source platform for building Energy 2.0 apps presented “Leveraging Underutilized DER Edge Compute to Improve Market Efficiencies” at LF Energy Summit in Brussels on Sept 5.  Joel Santisteban and John Gorman spoke about how they are using SolarNetwork open source software and the Orange Button taxonomy to build out SolarQuant, a DOE funded ML framework for edge computing. First goal: provide methods using edge intelligence to accomplish preventative maintenance with hardware fault forecasting for heterogenous C&I DER portfolios. Orange Button’s concepts for OMIssue, OMTask, OMWorkOrder and more will be tapped to articulate these events when training models and forecasting new device outages with edge based inference. Additional capacity on the U.S. electric grid is needed to meet increased demand. In a recent conversation with Latitude Media, EPRI VP Andrew Phillips said: "Demands on the power system are now increasing at an exponential rate, whether because of electrification or because of data centers or decarbonization, the transmission in our system has to increase in capacity,” Phillips said. So we have to utilize our existing assets a lot better,” Phillips added. “The GETs initiative objective is to accelerate the adoption and enable utilities to adopt it — but adopt with confidence and low risk, and [with] all the tools they need.” EPRI's new initiative, GET SET, will continue existing research, increase laboratory testing, and facilitate deployment of Grid-Enhancing Technologies (GETs), to help increase the capacity, efficiency, reliability, or safety of existing transmission lines. 📰 Read the full article: https://lnkd.in/e35vcAAp
