Working in long-term care (LTC) facilities across Florida, I’ve seen firsthand the impact that precision medicine, particularly pharmacogenomics (PGx), can have on patient care. In one recent analysis, we discovered the following: -52% of the residents—108 individuals—were classified as Immediate Action (IA) or High Risk (HR) due to potential medication interactions or adverse effects. -Across this population, 40 different medications were commonly prescribed across 8 disease states like psychiatry, cardiology, and pain management. This data highlights an enormous opportunity for deprescribing, dosing adjustments, and alternative therapy selections that could better align treatments with each patient’s unique genetic profile. My goal is to bring precision medicine into LTC settings in a meaningful way. By understanding these PGx insights, we can make targeted changes that reduce adverse drug reactions, personalize therapies, and ultimately improve the quality of life for our residents.
