𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 "𝗦𝗮𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗣𝗶𝗽𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗩𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗶𝘁𝘆" – 𝗶𝗻 𝗨𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝟭𝟬 𝗠𝗶𝗻𝘂𝘁𝗲𝘀! No metric in all of B2B marketing is surrounded by more confusion and more fundamentally wrong thinking than Sales Pipeline Velocity. In the video below, I take you step-by-step through exactly what Sales Pipeline Velocity is and is not...all in under 10 minutes! --- The key points about Sales Velocity are this: 👉 It is a FORECAST – a guess about things in the future 👉 It can never, under any context, be used as a "performance metric" 👉 It cannot be used to "monitor" your pipeline performance 👉 It is not BOTH a "forecast" and a "performance metric" 🤦‍♂️ --- One of the most common confusions is, "Oh, it's BOTH a performance metric AND a forecast!" 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️ This is a mathematical impossibility. Something is EITHER: 👉 a guess about things in the future that have not yet happened –or– 👉 a measurement of something in the past that actually happened in the real world. It can never, under ANY context, be both...the past is not the same thing as the future! That literally violates the structure of the universe and violates the Laws of Physics. 🤦‍♂️ --- So, if you understand that the Sales Velocity equation is a 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗮𝘀𝘁 of things that haven't yet happened, the question then is this: "𝘏𝘰𝘸 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘮𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝙋𝘼𝙎𝙏 𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘣𝘢𝘴𝘦𝘥 𝘰𝘯 𝘢 𝘨𝘶𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝙁𝙐𝙏𝙐𝙍𝙀 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘯𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘶𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘩𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘥?" The answer is simple – You CANNOT! --- The entire narrative in B2B marketing around Sales Pipeline Velocity is based on a lie! It's based on a complete failure to understand what the mathematics of the Sales Velocity equation is saying. And this is the thing about math...an equation has a SINGLE well-defined meaning. 1️⃣ We don't get to have "feelings" about what the math means 2️⃣ We don't get to have our own "personal opinions" about what math means! The entire point of introducing math and equations is to bring a level of rigor and structure that goes beyond everyone's personal "feelings" --- Finally, what the Sales Velocity equation is doing is forecasting FUTURE "Deal Velocity" Deal Velocity is an actual measurement of actual close-won revenue events that actually happened in the real world...and is a highly useful metric! 👉 𝗦𝗮𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗩𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗶𝘁𝘆 is the FORECAST 👉 𝗗𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝗩𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗶𝘁𝘆 is the Performance Metric --- I'm open if anyone is interested in having me run an internal workshop on how to properly deploy BOTH these metrics into your Marketing and Sales reporting.

“Usually, when everyone around you disagrees with you, your default assumption should be that you're mistaken. But this is one of the rare exceptions. VCs who haven't been founders themselves don't know how founders should run companies. Paul Graham just dropped a new essay: Founder Mode vs. Manager Mode. On why you shouldn’t listen to the advice of non-founders professionals&VCs ;) The context? Founders are often told to “hire good people and give them room to do their work,” but YC has observed that this is the best recipe to have a founder-led company run into the ground. Is the advice wrong? No, it’s just aimed at the wrong audience. It works well for managed corporations but poorly for founder-led companies. Why? Because, in reality, no one knows how founders manage their companies to success, and a Harvard Business School MBA won’t teach you that. From all the stories known, founders are always involved in delegated tasks. The degree of involvement varies depending on the task and the company’s stage. But what makes founders different, sometimes even difficult to work with, is that they don’t follow the usual management rules. And that’s exactly why their companies succeed. Seibel had an interesting tweet this week about the founder's power as the "person with the idea." But that power is also a burden. The reason manager mode doesn’t work for founders is that their life is tied to the survival of their creation. The two are inseparable. It’s not just a career, it's our life. #FoundersAtWork

If you consider yourself to have the “entrepreneurial itch”, I highly recommend you read this book. If you haven’t read the E-Myth by Michael E. Gerber, you’re going to want to check it out. It was refreshing to hear his perspective as I’ve noticed this issue in many business owners. There are three types of responsibilities when it comes to entrepreneurship. The technician, manager, and entrepreneur. To explain it as simple as I can, the Entrepreneurial Myth is when an employee decides they would prefer to be their own boss, pave their own path, control their own destiny, etc. If you’re not going to work for someone else, you’re going to work for yourself. This is the entrepreneur. They believe they understand the business they currently work in, and are good at it. So they start a business doing just that, but they find themselves completely preoccupied doing the work. This is the technician. The business itself requires management. So the individual takes over that roll and wants to make sure things are in order. This is the manager. What happens is, the decision to be an entrepreneur turns into a job where the technician and the manager require the most attention. If you’re too focused doing the thing, the entrepreneur is lost leading to burnout and unfullfilment. This is why 78% of businesses fail in the first 5 years. It’s finding the ability to delegate and build out a team to do what you’re best at that gets people. With this in mind, I don’t believe starting your own business is a bad idea, but it’s a bad long term strategy. With entrepreneurship through acqusition (ETA), you can pursue a business that has been around for decades that will inevitably have existing employees, outdated systems and processes, etc., giving you the opportunity to step into the entrepreneur role. I truly believe this approach is the best way to achieving your financial goals. Carol Dweck studied 380 7th graders for two years. Her insights about intelligence will make you reconsider everything you thought about human potential. Here's her revolutionary finding: Dweck's research uncovered two mindsets: fixed and growth. Fixed mindset: Intelligence is static. Growth mindset: Intelligence can be developed. But surprisingly, your mindset isn't just a personality trait. It's a predictor of success. Here's why... In one study, Dweck followed 380 7th graders for two years. The results? Students with a growth mindset saw their math grades steadily improve. Fixed mindset students' grades declined. But it's not just about grades. It's about life potential. Here's where it gets interesting: The brain is like a muscle. It gets stronger with use. Neuroscience backs this up with something called neuroplasticity. Every time you learn, your brain physically changes. But how do we harness this power? The power of "yet." Instead of saying "I can't do this," say "I can't do this yet." It's a complete mental shift. A Stanford study found that using "yet" increased motivation and performance by 17%. But there's more to it than just words... Dweck's work ties directly to the law of attraction and manifestation. Still, positive thinking alone isn't enough. You need to combine it with action. It's about creating a feedback loop of positive thoughts and real-world results. So how do we build it? Start with micro-wins. Every small success reinforces your growth mindset. It's not about becoming a millionaire overnight. It's about consistently hitting small, achievable goals. Over time, these compound into major life changes. But what if negative thoughts creep in? Recognizing negative thoughts is step one. Don't just push them away. Reframe them. "I'm not good at this" becomes "I'm getting better at this." Studies show this reframing can reduce anxiety by up to 39%. But the real magic happens when you combine this with action. Here's a practical exercise: • Set a small, achievable goal each day • Visualize yourself achieving it • Take action towards it • Celebrate your win Do this consistently, and watch your mindset—and life—transform.
