This article discussion flies in the face of the market PJM has created. A market that only supports short term assets like wind and solar backed up by gas or batteries. In short it confirms the market flaws that have been claimed by utilities over many years, and should encourage support for creating market signals to create long lived assets like baseload generation plants.

The DOE Grid Deployment Office has been studying how expanding transmission could help: ✅ integrate more renewable energy ✅ lower the cost of energy generation ✅ decrease carbon emissions from grid operations A new PNNL report, part of the National Transmission Planning Study, shows that with careful planning, new transmission lines and renewables would be able to keep the western grid stable even with high energy demand. 💡

The US Department of Energy’s Water Power Technologies Office (WPTO) has announced funding of over $1.7 million for research and development in hydropower and marine energy. This funding will support 16 hydropower projects and 12 marine energy projects at national laboratories across the country. Hydropower is a significant part of the US energy mix, accounting for 28.7% of the nation’s renewable electricity and 6.2% of total electricity generation. It plays a crucial role in maintaining grid reliability as more variable renewable sources like wind and solar are integrated. Marine energy technologies, which capture power from waves, tides, and ocean currents, have the potential to meet nearly 60% of the US power generation needs. These resources are highly predictable and could contribute significantly to a stable and reliable clean energy grid. The funded projects are part of WPTO’s Seedlings and Saplings program, designed to foster innovative research at DOE national laboratories. Seedling projects receive up to $100,000, with successful projects eligible for additional funding of up to $150,000 to continue their work. Researchers from Idaho National Laboratory (INL), National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), and Sandia National Laboratories will lead these efforts. A new report from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) looks at the technical potential of Grid Enhancing Technologies and suggests levers for stakeholders to accelerate deployment. In "Pathways to Commercial Liftoff: Innovative Grid Deployment" the DOE says: "These findings represent an urgent call to action for regulators, utilities and all grid stakeholders to evaluate the opportunity to deploy these types of solutions to improve the reliability and affordability of the grid today." "Liftoff will be achieved when utilities and regulators comprehensively value and integrate advanced solutions as part of core grid investment, planning and operations. A new investment from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is "a crucial action for both near- and long-term transmission planning to enable clean energy deployment." CATF's Nicole Pavia comments on DOE's announcement of a $1.5 billion investment in four important transmission projects.   The funding comes as part of a second round of funding from the $2.5 billion Transmission Facilitation Program, a revolving fund that facilitates construction of electricity transmission lines using capacity contracts, public private partnerships, or loans. PJM has published an addendum to its paper, Energy Transition in PJM: Flexibility for the Future, to provide supporting information and context for the assumptions used in the study’s analysis. The addendum was developed as a companion to the fourth phase of PJM’s ongoing effort to assess the impact of the energy transition, including the escalating integration of renewable resources on the grid. It provides details on the scenario development used in the study, including generation expansion drivers and siting, generation deactivation drivers, load forecast, transmission topology, and external interchange.
