I've been spending time training the latest iteration of our ICON Bot AI focused on music education the last few weeks, getting it to answer all the typical student questions that we usually get about the program or the subject matter. It's great for troubleshooting student software setup questions and answering questions about the program and the courses, scheduling, all those things. I've trained it on a dataset including an edited version of the school catalog, an internal FAQ, a condensed version of the Orientation, a list of faculty and staff, a web scrape of our school site, curated info from our program curriculum and lessons, support docs from some of the key software applications they use and so on. More is not always better here, the best performance is obtained by giving it access only to the docs it really needs. We had been using the previous iteration of this in a limited way the past couple quarters but I've rolled it out more widely to everyone now and am integrating it in our courses to give students help when and where they need it. Really excited they'll be able to get instant help when they're in the studio at 2am and then something goes wrong with their DAW, rather than having to search Internet forums or waiting days for their next online mentor session. The most interesting use case has been students using it to deconstruct how certain sounds were made in their favorite tracks, it can give detailed recipes for using common synthesizers and plugins for sound creation to get you started in the right direction. I'm still checking the logs everyday to make sure it's giving the answers I want, it's been more hands-on than I expected to get this working as I want but it's really getting quite good now and saving my students a lot of frustration. This is powered by GPT4 at the moment but as we move forward with this project I can see that the specific model used is less important than the prompt and the dataset curation. In future I'd like to try different models and see how the performance compares, really curious about trying Llama 3 at the moment. The biggest limitation I see using AI in education is that it's really not enough to just provide a box that can answer any question, this kind of assumes that the students know what to ask! To take this approach further, using the AI needs to be integrated into the assignments themselves, for example asking it how to re-create a certain sound, following the directions and then submitting the result to one of our human instructors for feedback. I think this hybrid approach will prove the most fruitful for what we're doing in future. #ai #education #music

𝗖𝗵𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗮 𝟬𝟯𝟯𝟭 - 𝗜𝗻 𝗪𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗿 𝗧𝗮𝗹𝗸𝘀 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗢𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 One question I get asked often: Do we have a physical school? No. Before COVID, VFX artists were used to being on-site, working shoulder-to-shoulder under "tight" deadlines. That was just how it was. But things have changed. Now, we’re finding there’s real value in: - More time with family & pets! - Fitting in a gym session during the day (our Alpha Chromatica lunches run 90 minutes for just that reason! whether you’re pumping iron or taking a long walk!) - No long commutes, especially in cold, rainy weather In short, a work-life balance that wasn’t even on the radar before. At Alpha Chromatica, we figured out work-from-home on day one and we love it. Remote setups deliver the same quality of work with less burnout and more flexibility, which ultimately leads to better focus and creativity in our students' projects. So, returning to a full-time, on-site model “just because” seems outdated. Especially when, too often, “collaboration” means sitting in separate rooms, still Zooming. Hybrid work respects artists’ lives without compromising results. Isn’t it time we rethink what office work really looks like? With fewer options to hire foreign talent, studios are going to be competing for a finite pool of local artists. No matter how prestigious the studio, those unwilling to offer artists the balanced lifestyle they’ve come to expect are going to find themselves in a tough spot in the months ahead. P.S. I MADE A BOOK! Blank Comic Book for big imaginations is a kids learning activity book that teaches basic comic book elements and provides 90+ templates to create your own! The goal: Create a fun and relative learning space for a basic yet highly visual demographic … often with short attention spans. The process: I am constantly learning. Creating content for this young demographic is a fun and interesting process. The balance of starting with what I know and reducing to its simplest forms became a repeated addition and subtraction equation. For most sentences, I found myself writing my thoughts, rewriting to how I think a child would comprehend, and then removing 5+ words. Then I asked my 7 year old and changed more words. My answer = highest impact and concise content in its simplest form. The take away: This process highlighted the importance of my demographic but more so, the importance of user testing. Even though I thought I had it perfect, turns out it wasn’t. My UX tester was my most important asset and had the best ideas… even though she’s only 7yrs. I hope everyone enjoys it!
