Exciting news! We just sent out the inaugural newsletter for Future Frontier Capital, our pre-seed venture fund backing frontier tech startups. As I hit "send," I realized how launching FFC parallels the path of the founders we support. Starting FFC has required the same passion, perseverance, and self-belief that drive entrepreneurs. Congratulations to GrayMatter Robotics on their successful Series B! Interesting piece from Marc Andreessen on how startups are not getting the regulatory support they need to sustain America's technological leadership. "Regulatory agencies have been green lit to use brute force investigations, prosecutions, intimidation, and threats to hobble new industries, such as Blockchain. Regulatory agencies are being green lit in real time to do the same to Artificial Intelligence." While many investors themselves (both in the US and Europe) are worried how AI will change our lives, our jobs and social interactions, the top VC opinion leader thinks regulation is already too restrictive. #techstartups #techleadership #strategicgrowth

The (Healthcare) Ground Beneath Our Feet… This year it is likely that over $10 billion will be invested in the digital health sector – a robust amount, no doubt, but inconsequential when compared to the amount of capital tied up in healthcare real estate assets, which is estimated to be $1.2 trillion by Jones Lang Lasalle. Of that amount, approximately $790 billion is in the hospital sector while the remaining $490 billion is in medical office assets. It is estimated that there are 48.6k facilities with 3.4 billion square feet of healthcare real estate, 42% of which are owned by REITs and another 33% held by other private investment vehicles. Much of the digital health investment is meant to make the physical healthcare infrastructure more productive: greater operating efficiencies, greater patient throughput, more relevant personalized care models with better outcomes. As the healthcare system is being pushed to be more distributed to lower cost sites of care, accelerated now by the rapid proliferation of automation and AI capabilities, the potential impact on healthcare infrastructure assets will be profound. Open AI GPT-4o announced yesterday, fascinating. Omni modal, one mind with text, image, video 2x faster 50% cheaper 5x higher rate limits AI is moving so fast. I'm thinking about what it means for manufacturing and enterprise data. Used another of my favorite software tools Loom to record a quick 'Opinion' while watching some of their Youtube video demo, showing it reading a temperature variation chart and acting as a simple data analyst. What do you think GPT 4o and the direction implies for enterprise data stacks and manufacturing AI? My takeaway - we need to rethink data architectures from 'how do I design for crazy busy humans' to 'how do I design for AIs with near infinite time to read charts and reports and finally summarize/interact with humans'. Reflecting on how much human-work goes into defining the simplest possible red/yellow/green KPI from a mountain of data, like getting everything into MQTT for a final OEE score. We do so much to help a human make a decision spending 10 seconds or less glancing at a final graph or number. When instead imagine using those 10 seconds the human has to be able to ask/interact with an AI that can have read 1000's of graphs/reports in advance, built on rich contextualized data, just to best answer your question. The 2024 NVCA Yearbook is out, and there are a few tidbits about the VC landscape 💴 ▪️More Places to Pitch: There's been a slight increase in investments made outside of Silicon Valley and other traditional tech hubs. Cities across the Midwest and South are seeing more VC activity, which could drive regional innovation. Not Seattle, though. Do better, PNW. ▪️Sluggish Fundraising, More Dry Powder: Although fundraising did not pick up steam in 2023, the amount of dry powder held by the industry ticked up slightly to $311 billion. It's out there, waiting to be deployed. ▪️The Old Normal: Corporate investors are still active-ish. CVC and family office investments were down but remain a significant minority of the deals and dollars committed in VC. ▪️Sustainable is Sizzling: ESG factors increasingly matter for deal-makers. More venture firms are making sustainability an investment focus area/criteria. Not-So-New Money: AI, biotech, and clean energy investing have been hot for a while. This isn’t breaking news, but it’s increasingly true. ▪️Risky and Safe: The current economic climate poses numerous challenges but also plenty of opportunities.
