⌛ The deadline for YC’s S24 batch is April 22! I get a ton of requests for application feedback, so I’ve consolidated my advice here: 𝐓𝐞𝐚𝐦 > 𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐚 + 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬 Your idea will change; that’s what it means to be pre-product-market fit. A bet on an early-stage company is a bet on the team to iterate rapidly and figure it out; think of your idea and your progress as useful evidence. Don’t be discouraged if you feel like you haven’t made enough progress, because the amount of progress you’ve made is not nearly as important as how fast you made it. In other words: “slope, not intercept”. 𝐁𝐞 𝐬𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞. 𝐁𝐞 𝐝𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭. Explain your idea clearly in 1-2 sentences: who are your users and what problem do you solve? Avoid jargon, marketing-speak, technical intricacies, or an exhaustive list of features. Tacking on “...with AI” or “...with blockchain” is not any more helpful than “...with computers”. Bad: “We are transforming the global software development industry with a revolutionary AI platform that streamlines the SDLC for tremendous efficiency gains using cutting-edge LLMs.” Better: “We’re a developer tool that automatically reviews code and fixes bugs.” 𝐊𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐬 You should feel like an expert on your users, and have some unique/contrarian insights about them. You’ve hopefully identified a “hair-on-fire” pain they have, and you’re building a product to fix their problem. It’s hard to spend too much time talking to your users. Interviewing 50-100 people seems like a good place to start. If you’ve talked to less than, say, 10-20, it might be hard to know you’re solving a real problem. 𝐊𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐲𝐨𝐮’𝐫𝐞 𝐠𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐲 What’s your path to $1B in revenue? Keep it simple. You don’t need a 5-tier pricing strategy and a multi-year product roadmap, you need to know roughly how many potential customers you have and how much they’re likely to pay (bottom-up analysis), and how big the overall market is (top-down). Reasonable estimates are OK. Remember, the VC model is based on a power law of startup returns, where one huge exit makes up for all other investments going to zero. This makes a tiny chance at becoming a $10B company quite valuable, and a high chance at becoming a $50M company surprisingly useless. 𝐒𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐲? Emphatic yes! YC was an awesome experience for us and every YC alumnus I’ve asked so far - it changed the trajectory of our startup. As I sit in the airplane, looking out the window, it's good to have time to consolidate some of my thoughts on our experiences with AI, our AI startup, and the future. As a founder and CEO of an AI startup, I know first-hand that AI skepticism is real. Despite the rapid advancement of AI tools, many organizations still face resistance when it comes to actually implementing them. CEOs might be eager to adopt AI, but it's a different story internally. Teams often push back, citing concerns about privacy, the learning curve, or even job security. These aren't unfounded fears—but in my experience, the real risk lies in resisting AI altogether. As Charles Darwin said, "It's not the strongest or most intelligent who survive, but those most responsive to change." Selling AI internally can be as challenging as selling it externally. I've seen companies invest in AI tools only to have them sit unused while employees stick to manual processes that waste time and resources. Why? Often because the benefits of AI are abstract or the learning curve feels too steep. But AI isn't about replacing humans—it's about augmenting us, helping us work smarter, not harder. I've experienced first-hand that AI can unlock massive productivity gains, and I'm convinced that those who don't adapt will get left behind. Amara's law stuck with me: We tend to overestimate the short-term impact of technology and underestimate its long-term potential. The dot-com bubble of the 1990s is a perfect example. Today, everything we imagined back then is a multi-billion dollar business. AI will likely follow a similar path—it won't change your job overnight, but entire industries will be transformed in 5-10 years. I have played a lot recently with OpenAI's o1-preview, testing all the applications it can code, and it's genuinely a fantastic beast. I'm seeing the monumental changes on the horizon. AI's capabilities today are wild, but five years from now, they will be game-changing. We're already at a point where AI can replace many of the repetitive work developers do, which will have huge implications across industries. The challenge now isn't whether AI will be capable but whether we can adapt fast enough to keep up. AI should be viewed as a co-intelligence—augmenting human decisions rather than replacing human responsibility. The future of work will be shaped by AI's abilities and how we integrate it into our systems. The organizations and individuals who thrive will understand AI not as a threat but a powerful tool to push boundaries and unlock new opportunities. “Tavi Li” is a phrase I know very well. I hear it all the time from my 2-year-old. It’s a Hebrew phrase that means “give me”. That’s why when I stumbled upon an AI project called “Tavily” I was intrigued. When I looked it up I realized that I know the author and I was blown away by the popularity of this project which I have not heard about before. Founded by Assaf Elovic and Rotem Weiss, Tavily is an AI research agent. Unlike ChatGPT which provides basic research, Tavily provides a comprehensive research and includes sources. This reduces hallucinations to minimum. I use it daily at Toffu AI and I have yet to encounter any hallucination issues. Analysis: Key technical leader departs OpenAI Ilya Sutskever, really is the brains behind the whole operation. Chief Scientist, board member and co-founder.. This happened two days after, the hype announcement of GPT-4o. With both Andrej Karpathy & Ilya Sutskever leaving within the last few months, this leaves a rather large technical gap in the leadership team of the Research Lab. The GPT-4o announcement happening 1 day before 'Google I/O 2024', largely overshadowing the event. Personally I think this is good for Microsoft, its stock is up 8% this month, to put that in perspective - 250 billion USD, or 5 and half Twitters!! Previously OpenAI actively attempted to remove all emotions from their AI, recent audio demos of the new speech model seems to be going in the other direction using science fiction as a product roadmap. The curious change is rather sudden and may be explained by Mustafa Suleyman recently becoming the CEO of Microsoft AI Mustafa Suleyman previously CEO of Inflection AI was creating an emotionally aware chatbot called 'Pi'. 1 day ago 'John Schulman' one of the remaining technical co-founders of OpenAI, was the guest of a well known AI podcast, this appearance seems genuine and not a PR effort - https://lnkd.in/gEcrvmvU Big changes in the AI world, remember OpenAI is a Research Lab first and foremost - with many of the founding researchers departing within a few months, sending an interesting market signal. C-level employees are leaving OpenAI. 1. Iliya Sutskever, chief scientist and co-founder of the company (first on the right). I recommend watching his interview with Lex Fridman. Ilya is crazy smart. 2. Greg Brockman, president and co-founder (second from the right). 3. And most recently, Mira Murati, CTO (on the left). There are also some people who left that are not present in the photo. One of them went to work for Anthropic (the company behind Claude). Huge chunk of a startup's success lies in the founding team. So this really is concerning. Especially taking into account that Sam Altman is a non-technical manager. And that all of it is happening during OpenAI’s transition from nonprofit to for-profit organization. Don’t know what to make of this; Sam seems genuine, but seeing the top technical crew leave is just sad.

Best thing I read this week! It’s so true that dissatisfaction can fuel growth and the motivation to improve. It’s interesting that I could relate this to some conversations I’ve had recently with a couple of Fortune 500 companies. It was tough to hear, but I knew that how I responded in that moment would define the outcome. I took a deep breath and assured the client, “We are committed to making this right.” I shared their feedback with my team, and together, we got to work. We treated the redesign as an opportunity to exceed expectations, collaborating closely with the client at every step to ensure we brought their vision to life. The result? A stunning website they absolutely loved! But it didn’t end there. I asked for a testimonial, and the client happily delivered. The relationship remained intact, with trust stronger than ever. No bridges were burned in fact, we built a stronger one. This experience reminded me that challenges are inevitable in business, but what matters is how you face them. I just built an Agreement Redliner Agent in <5 mins with Lyzr AI Agent API Studio.
