Rick Watson founded RMW Commerce Consulting after spending 20+ years as a technology entrepreneur and operator exclusively in the eCommerce industry with companies like ChannelAdvisor, BarnesandNoble.com, Merchantry, and Pitney Bowes.
Watson’s work today is centered on supporting investors and management teams incubating and growing direct-to-consumer businesses. Most recently, in partnership with WHP Global, Rick was a critical resource in architecting the WHP+ platform, a new turnkey direct-to-consumer digital e-commerce platform that powers AnneKlein.com and JosephAbboud.com.
Watson also hosts a podcast, The Watson Weekly, where he shares an unbiased, unfiltered expert take on the retail sector’s biggest news and players.

How do you experiment and learn from product impact data and feedback?
Having a data collection strategy up-front is a critical step in an important project -- as important as having unit and regression tests for a piece of code. If an "improvement" on a website or project causes important metrics to decline significantly, it's best to act as quickly as possible to reverse your change, or limit this experiment to only a small piece of traffic. Automating tests can be done using A/B testing platforms, are critical for important pages and there are many vendors out there for this purpose. For smaller changes, however, A/B testing every change can be cumbersome for some teams.

How do you experiment and learn from product impact data and feedback?
At the beginning of a project, it's often not easy to understand exactly what impact your project will have on the business. At the very least, however, you should know which business metrics you want to affect. If you are building a landing page, then conversion rate is a popular one. You may not know which change will improve that metric. As a result, you will need a basket of experiments designed to improve it over time. The more you learn and improve a page, the more you discover can be improved.
