Tech Tip Tuesdays with Ansys Optics: CMOS - Optical Simulation Methodology As CMOS image sensors evolve, smaller pixel sizes and larger fill-factors are driving down costs—but not without challenges. Reducing pixel size can lead to signal-to-noise issues and increased cross-talk between adjacent pixels. Advanced optical simulations offer solutions to these challenges by ensuring optimized designs without compromising image quality. Here's how: Wave Optics vs. Ray Optics: When pixel dimensions approach the wavelength scale, wave optics become essential. A photon, treated as a wave, passes through all possible microlenses, forming an interference pattern that dictates absorption probabilities. Questions about specific paths a photon takes are no longer relevant in wave optics simulations. What Simulations Can Calculate: 1️⃣ Quantum Efficiency (QE): Ratio of collected electrons to incoming photons. 2️⃣ Optical Efficiency (OE): Key component of QE, evaluating photon-to-electron conversion. 3️⃣ Optical Cross-Talk, PSF, and MTF: Measure the ability to resolve spatial features. 4️⃣ Spectral Cross-Talk & Color Matrix Coefficients: Essential for color accuracy and reduced noise. 5️⃣ Electrical Cross-Talk: Tracks electrons captured by neighboring pixels. Illumination Conditions: Simulations use uniform illumination to mimic real-world scenarios, calculating field intensity and OE based on an incoherent sum of results from each beam position. This efficient approach focuses on the periodicity of sensor arrays, leveraging one unit cell's results for broader applications. Optimizing Image Sensors: Key insights include: 👉 Centering microlenses to align angular response peaks with the chief ray angle. 👉 Using weighted integrations of plane waves supported by the objective lens. Simulations combining optical and electrical modeling are pivotal in addressing the complexities of modern CMOS sensors. By leveraging wave optics and tailored methodologies, engineers can innovate in consumer electronics, enhancing performance and efficiency. The cost of chip designs has risen at an incredibly rapid pace. From the 28nm design in 2011 to 3nm in 2022, the cost of designing a chip increased by 12x – benefiting design tool and IP giants such as Synopsys Inc, Cadence Design Systems, and Arm.

In 2016, as chair of the PBS Engineering Technology Advisory Committee (ETAC), I introduced the potential of photonic circuit switches to a broad public media ETAC Member stations through a PBS Technews column. Photonic circuit switches, utilizing photons instead of electrons, significantly reduce energy consumption. By miniaturizing light-guiding components onto silicon chips, they provide a powerful solution for maximizing expensive resources. This technology holds particular promise for applications demanding high bandwidth, such as remote sports production and telematic performance. Today, the demand for high-quality, big-screen content underscores the critical role of optical communication in robust media networks. Thankfully, advancements in integrated switches are delivering real-world benefits, paving the way for a more sustainable and efficient future of connectivity.
