The primary purpose of this study was to examine the experiences of seven new members of one professional association serving student affairs professionals. The study was a qualitative case study and examined the experiences of seven association members. The researcher collected data through face-to-face interviews, document analysis, and participant observation. The study began with face-to-face interviews of all seven participants. Following the interviews, participants were asked to complete a Critical Incident Form. The researcher spent time in the studied association, acting as a participant observer. Finally, the researcher analyzed a number of documents from the association. The data identified six themes as common to the experiences of participants. These themes included the importance of support, the significance of finding a good fit, perceptions, feelings and reality, connections through networking, focusing on professional growth, and personalization builds commitment.
The findings of this study will advance the body of knowledge in the area of professional association socialization and retention, specifically for new members within a professional association. This study provided a greater understanding of the needs of the new member to one professional association and how a professional association can enhance an individual’s membership through attentive listening to new members. -

Current educational, political, and economic conditions are prompting increased calls for educators to redesign campus environments that develop the whole student with a focus on student learning outcomes. In a climate of shrinking resources and greater scrutiny on higher education, isolated approaches between student and academic affairs can no longer be sustained; creating educational environments that promote student learning requires collaborative efforts across the academy. Although significant progress has been made nationally in developing partnerships between academic and student affairs divisions, more needs to be done to ensure the holistic development of all students. Student and Academic Affairs Collaboration: The Divine Comity is a practical guide for fostering and improving collaborative relationships between faculty and student affairs personnel. It reveals the nine elements necessary for successful partnerships between the two divisions, and offers long-term strategies for creating designs that are more coherent, comprehensive, and collaborative. Written and edited by leading scholars and practitioners from NASPA's Student Affairs Professionals Working With and In Academic Affairs Knowledge Community, The Divine Comity highlights best practices from institutions nationwide that are engaging in effective student and academic affairs partnerships. It also provides recommendations for outreach efforts, communication plans, classroom?residence hall continuity, and collaboration within the community college setting. The Divine Comity is a vital resource for higher education professionals interested in improving the success of all students.

Western Michigan University Teaching Style Survey: A Nonevaluative Scale of Teaching Style as Reported by Students
Western Michigan University
Students know little about the differences between professors that they may at some point come in contact. Students rely heavily on hearsay of others to learn about the teaching style of professors. Students know little about the differences between professors that they may at some point come in contact. Students rely heavily on hearsay of others to learn about the teaching style of professors. This hearsay is non-scientific, relying on mainly opinions instead of fact. The Teaching Style Survey (TSS) looks at a professors' teaching style and how it relates to the students' learning style. With this information, students will be able to find professors that complement their learning style, not blindly picking the professor just to fill a time slot. This becomes particularly important when looking at multiple sections and elective courses offered by the university. These courses have numerous professors to select from, many being professors that students are unfamiliar with. The enclosed paper will describe the process taken in developing the TSS, the controversies that arose from implementation of the survey, and the future of the survey.

Parenting doesn’t come with a manual, but since 2019 a Williamston-based organization has been building safe and local communities of support and education for dads. Fathering Together is a nonprofit that offers free educational programs and consulting services to fathers around the world who are seeking to be more engaged and connected with their children and families.
The organization was selected as the Nonprofit of the Year in the 2023 Greater Lansing Entrepreneurial Awards.
“This award affirms the work that our organization has been doing for so many years and really energizes our whole team to continue the work that we are doing to support fathers around the world,” said Christopher Lewis, co-founder and chief information officer at Fathering Together. “At the same time, this award lights a fire under our whole organization as we look at the goals that we have for our organization and the vision that we are working to realize.” -

the former chair of a knowledge community that promotes a better understanding and
partnership between academic affairs and student affairs within higher education.
Christopher Lewis (BA ’97, Organization Communication) currently directs Enrollment
Programs and Student Services and is the Associate Director of Admissions at Western
Michigan University Cooley Law School. He can trace his career path back to his days as a
student at WMU, when he began working on the admissions office with Scott Hennessey
(current WMU associate director for admissions outreach). Lewis also became involved in
the Western Student Association, a fraternity, and a number of other on-campus
organizations. Through these activities, he came connected with Diane Anderson (current
WMU vice president for student affairs) and Theresa Powell (former WMU vice president
for student affairs), who became mentors to him.
Lewis stepped back from his chair position on SAPAA, but has maintained connections and
allowed others to take the reins so the community can continue to grow and transform. It
was for this work that it was proposed the distinguished service award be renamed in
Lewis’ honor.
