It's a money story, after all. South Korea has recently entered the era of "paid sports streaming" with the launch of a pro- baseball streaming package (5,500 won per month, Tving). The debate over the appropriateness of the price has been hotly debated in Korea. "The viewing value of professional baseball is 5,500 won per month The United States, long accustomed to paying to watch sports events, has recently seen the extremes of sports streaming. It has seen the rise of 'super sports streaming', which has taken over 85% of the total sports broadcast market. It's no secret that sports are good for streaming subscriptions. This joint venture platform between Disney, Fox, and Warner Bros. Discovery could certainly attract a lot of subscribers. If the NFL, NBA, NHL, etc. are all on one service, it's going to get a lot of attention. You don't need AI replays or anything like that. The sports themselves are immersive. How much would Americans be willing to pay for an all-in-one sports package, and who would seek it out? It's not going to be all ESPN subscribers, and it's not going to be all ESPN subscribers. However, recent high-profile streaming issues—such as those reported by Netflix during the Mike Tyson vs. Jake Paul fight—highlight a persistent challenge: overcoming technical hurdles that the #cable industry had years to refine. One of the most likely culprits behind Netflix's streaming difficulties is a Content Delivery Network (CDN) issue. CDNs are crucial for delivering #content efficiently to a global audience, particularly during high-demand events. Netflix, known for its technological sophistication, has invested heavily in its own proprietary CDN, Netflix Open Connect, to optimize on-demand streaming. However, it remains unclear whether this CDN is being utilized for live streaming or if a different infrastructure is in place (perhaps a third-party service). This raises important questions about the readiness and scalability of current #streaming services, including Netflix, to handle live, high-profile events. The issue of scalability, particularly during surges in demand for live content, is a hurdle streaming platforms must overcome. Traditional cable providers, with decades to optimize their infrastructure, (arguably) largely solved these challenges. Streaming services, by contrast, are navigating these complexities with far less time to mature their technologies. It’s also important to acknowledge that streaming, as a medium, is still relatively new. These "kinks" are part of the growing pains associated with a rapidly evolving industry. As more platforms venture into live and interactive offerings, having the right technology is critical. Ensuring a seamless experience during high-stakes events like this requires robust, next-generation solutions capable of handling unpredictable demand spikes. What’s particularly notable in this case is that Netflix, widely regarded as a leader in streaming technology, has encountered such challenges. If even Netflix struggles with live event streaming despite its proprietary CDN and years of innovation, other platforms that lag behind in technological sophistication are likely to face even greater challenges. Some key takeaways, How a streaming service can be profitable? Depends on the number of subscribers required to make shows & movies cost-effective. As per the article, top executives interviewed, the number hovering around 200 mn. (20 Cr.)   Netflix has it around 27 Cr. Subs with the average of $11 (Around Rs.920/-) per month. Netflix is in the leadership position spending huge amount on content, will spend $17 bn this year. Recent release '3 Body Problem' reportedly made in $20 mn (Rs.167 Cr.) per episode. Other competitor Amazon Prime is not lagging behind in content expenditure. Their recent top title 'Fallout' season cost is $153 mn (Rs.1254 Cr.)   It seems like a never-ending maze. You need to provide a hit after hit without an interval. Every hit show/movie raise the bar & the platform can't lower it down. There is no success guarantee hence you have to produce or license multiple titles at a time hoping that one would be hit.   Live sports events has become integral part of platforms. All are competing to grab the streaming rights. It is helping platforms to retain & add subscribers. Also gaining advertising revenue. Like Jio Cinema, Disney+Hotstar are streaming live sports events in India. There are so many sporting events round the year. Supportively, streaming platforms are releasing sports based content around the event like documentaries, movies, web-shows etc. The question arises here is cost of sports streaming rights against the profits.   Long lasting debate on pure SVoD and AVoD has come into an end as companies realized not to rely on one of it exclusively. So now almost all leading platforms have embraced ad-supported model with discounts on subscription. This policy has shown fine results. It has opened all options to all sorts of viewers. On the other hand, companies are trying to balance the content between mass and class to achieve better results on scale.   How many platforms would remain in the end? As executives predict, only 3-4 would survive. Netflix and Prime amongst them. Disney+Hulu could be third and Apple could be the last participant. What about other giants like Peacock, WBD, Paramount+ etc.? They could survive with their cable/broadcast companies or selling their assets. Bundling, aggregating, licensing, consolidations, M&A's, collabs and all kinds of remedies are in trial to survive in the competition. In all of this clutter, niche platforms are having unique position. Interestingly as the article indicates, if the niche platform can operate in lower cost without competing with giants, it can survive & be profitable.   Viewers seems to be benefitted by all these happenings. They are getting best of the content, lot of options on multiple screens & in lesser costs.   As Bryan Lourd, chief executive & co-chairman of CAA (Creative Artists Agency) said, "media executives needed to put aside financial engineering and remember that creativity — and entertaining customers — was the only way to win in the long run."
