White critically examine the resurgence of AI agents—autonomous programs designed to perform tasks on behalf of users. They argue that, despite advancements in generative AI, deploying agents alone is insufficient for achieving meaningful real-world impact. Instead they propose a comprehensive ecosystem comprising three key components: 1. #Agents: Autonomous programs that execute tasks for users. 2. #Sims: Personalized models that simulate user preferences and behaviors, ensuring that agents act in alignment with individual needs. 3. #Assistants: AI companions that interact directly with users, coordinating tasks and facilitating seamless execution with the support of agents. The authors trace the historical development of AI agents, identifying five distinct eras, each characterized by specific architectures and technologies. They highlight the limitations encountered in each period, such as the rigidity of early symbolic AI agents and the narrow applicability of expert systems. These historical insights underscore the challenges of relying solely on agents for complex, real-world tasks. A central critique presented by Shah and White is that while agents can automate tasks, they often do so at the expense of user agency and may require significant supervision, especially when handling complex or personalized tasks. OpenAI — an artificial intelligence research company — created ChatGPT and launched the tool in November 2022. With that, 2023 became the year of humans understanding #genAI’s capabilities. Then 2024 was the year of genAI’s integration into marketing automation solutions. Now, 2025 will be the year humans wrest control of genAI to ensure it is properly used for its role to deliver real-time, precision marketing messages.
