Oregon’s forests are on the frontlines of the climate crisis — not only as victims of increasing wildfires but also as a critical defense against carbon emissions. As highlighted in recent discussions, carbon markets are emerging as a tool to protect these ecosystems while addressing climate issues. However, these markets are far from perfect, and the example of the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Indian Reservation shows both the potential and the challenges. In 2015, record wildfires swept across Oregon, a deep reminder of the accelerating impacts of climate change. For tribes such as the Colville, who steward over 900,000 acres of forest, balancing sustainable forest management with the risk of wildfire is an urgent task. Carbon markets allow entities to sell carbon credits by maintaining forests that sequester carbon, offering a financial lifeline alongside conservation incentives. But the system is complicated. For example, while carbon credits may keep forests standing, they simultaneously allow the industries buying those credits to continue polluting. This creates the risk of perpetuating emissions without directly investing in cleaner technologies. Additionally, climate change makes carbon credits especially volatile. What happens if the forests backing these credits burn down? The stored carbon is released, turning the market mechanism from a climate solution to a climate hazard. These concerns underscore the need for stronger regulatory and verification frameworks, ensuring transparency and accountability. If carbon markets are to succeed, they must work hand-in-hand with regulatory bodies that ensure long-term sustainability and honest reporting. One aspect that must not be overlooked is the role of Indigenous stewardship. The Colville Tribes and other Indigenous communities have historically managed these lands with practices like controlled burns and biodiversity protection. Their deep connection to the land provides lessons in ecological management that need to be a key part of any solution. For carbon markets to truly work, Indigenous leaders must not just participate but lead — ensuring that the systems honor the land and its people. Moving forward, we need to better link the reduction of emissions at their source with this market-driven forest conservation approach. Without healthy forests, the road to addressing climate change becomes that much harder. It’s an exciting time for carbon markets, but the stakes are immense. The Council will also support the Biden-Harris Administration’s "Principles for Responsible Participation in Voluntary Carbon Markets". 💡 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀. The Council will review and recommend changes to: • the list of protocols for generating environmental credits; • required qualifications for entities providing technical assistance; and • activities for which technical assistance providers and third-party verifiers may register to provide services under the Program that prevent, reduce, or mitigate GHGs. 📅 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀. HAMERKOP was recently featured in Volume 2 of Clean Cooking Alliance (CCA)’s Digital Magazine “Vantage Point: Perspectives on Clean Cooking” 👇 According to the CCA… “Despite recent growth, there remains significant potential for carbon markets to deliver increased climate finance to the clean cooking sector… Less than 5% of carbon credits generated in the voluntary carbon market are from clean cooking, while fewer than 10 project developers dominate the flow of clean cooking credits.” 🚀 To address this, HAMERKOP has helped the CCA with their Venture Accelerator programme in West Africa. This means providing early stage businesses with the support, tools, and expertise they needed to develop carbon finance projects. 🇬🇭 Last year we traveled to Accra, Ghana to support the Venture Accelerator with our technical expertise at an inaugural capacity building boot camp ✅ It is a pleasure bringing our skills around the world to support the growth of impactful initiatives. In more good news for nature finance, the Green Climate Fund recently announced a new policy that “… permanently integrates REDD+ results-based payments into GCF’s regular project activity cycle. This will significantly enhance the predictability of REDD+ financing, providing a powerful incentive for developing countries to embark on REDD+ and reduce their emissions from deforestation and forest degradation.” More of this please! Making forests worth more alive than logged is a central part of addressing climate change and protecting water, habitat and biodiversity. Pricing carbon and measuring and rewarding governments and private land owners for protecting and restoring the “lungs of the planet” is good policy all of the way around. #huntthegoodstuff

USDA has invested $3.03 billion dollars in 135 pilot projects nationwide to connect customers to farmers, ranchers, and private landowners implementing “climate smart” production practices on working lands “to build soil health, sequester carbon, and enhance productivity.” The agency recently reported on the number and diversity of projects incentivized by the Partnerships for Climate-Smart Commodities. Verra has submitted feedback to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) on the draft design of a program that would enable America’s farmers, ranchers, and forest landowners to participate in the voluntary carbon market by identifying high-integrity protocols (i.e., methodologies) for generating carbon credits. Verra’s written comments underscored the following key points: 🚜 Verra commends the administration’s recent commitment to a high-integrity carbon market. 🚜 Verra believes in the rigor necessary to ensure the generation of high-quality credits and a strong carbon market. 🚜 Verra believes that the USDA should utilize the existing infrastructure of greenhouse gas crediting programs for guidance to ensure high-integrity action in the carbon market and efficient project development and management processes. Verra also recommended that the USDA evaluate several Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) methodologies for listing under its program and review the VCS Program as a whole. The public comment periods for the projects listed here opened during the week of August 26. This week's listing includes projects seeking registration and/or verification in the Plastic Waste Reduction, Verified Carbon Standard (VCS), and the Climate, Community and Biodiversity Standards (CCBS) Programs. The projects are located in various geographic regions, including Pakistan, India, and the Tanghe region of China.
