What is a TypeScript Engineer? I keep seeing this pop up in recruitment posts, which means clients are asking for it...right? Has this replaced the FullStack Engineer, which, lets be honest, meant a NodeJS developer. That was back in the good old days when it was only NodeJS. Now we have Bun, Deno, Hono and more. Or perhaps its asking for a Javascript developer...whatever that means in todays world of a thousand js frameworks and evolving ES standards. Or are they actually asking for a Java developer, because someones used Gen AI along the way and it got confused between Java and Javascript (*shudders*) Are they seriously in need of a type system engineer, thats kinda niche. It's hard enough trying to explain what you do as a job to "normal" folk as it is, without this level of obfuscation. How would you even explain this when asked "What do you do?". Do kids nowadays needs to consider themselves experts in everything inside package.json to land a job? When will the industry move beyond this fixation on specific languages? I get it, it's an important consideration, but asking for Typescript Engineers...it's not going to help you find the devs you actually need.

Why are you using #Go / #golang? Popularity with #Go / #Golang is going through the roof... particularly in the North West tech scene... but why? dcoded. we have been talking to a lot of #SoftwareEngineeringLeaders who are now utilising #Go as one of their primary programming languages within their Tech Stack. WHY? Have you ever heard of the Glue Developer? If you do one thing today, take five minutes to read the link below. I recently had the pleasure of hosting Laura McFarland from Liberty IT on Code Bytes. Laura discussed the Glue Developer analogy, created by Tanya Reilly, which was truly enlightening. This analogy describes a common career path for women in technical roles who end up doing the "glue work." This includes tasks like onboarding junior engineers, updating roadmaps, and engaging with users. Over time, this often leads to suggestions that they might prefer a less technical role. While some women do prefer hands-off technical roles, Laura points out that many enjoy coding and find themselves on this path too frequently. This discussion is about raising awareness of the importance of teamwork and collaboration, and it got me thinking about how glue work applies to any industry or walk of life and consciousness of day-to-day at Search 5.0. 9/10 times, there is only one reason that developers fail their take-home tech tests - and it has the simplest solution. "Coding projects are a polarizing topic: some candidates love them while other candidates find them unfair. On one side, coding projects allow you to showcase your skills in a more natural environment, using the tools you love." Love them or hate them, they're a non-negotiable part of numerous development interview processes. I completely agree that these tech challenges should always be general tests so that applicants are not expected to provide free contributions to the client's platform, but there is one huge point missed in this article. TEST YOUR CODE! The most common feedback I’ve had for why a candidate has been unsuccessful with their tech challenge is “code does not compile”. If you’ve taken the time to complete a tech challenge, it is imperative that you check to see if it works. You may have spent 3 hours on it, maybe even longer; don’t skimp on Unit testing. https://lnkd.in/dP4Nd5u2

Software Developers - 2023 was rubbish wasn't it? However the market is really improving with many more jobs opening up compared to last year. But - there are now a lot of engineers active in the market too.. So some advice.. ⬇ A common complaint now is that you are not hearing back after sending your CV for roles you know/think you are good for. Here are some small pointers from my own recent observations to get you in the door to start with. ✅ You are competing now... your first mistake is having an unattractive, un-readable CV. Think - if you were the hiring manager, would you like this CV? ✅ This is incredibly important for Frontend focused developers.. ⬆ ✅ Less is more... focus on roles you are good for, don't use the spray technique if you know deep down you are not suitable. It's not good for your mental health either to get unnecessary rejections. ✅ Focus on your application properly - If you are applying for a Frontend / React/FS engineer, don't have PHP or Java as a visual focus point as soon as the CV is opened... this applies to all tech roles... ✅ Follow up after a few days - don't sit back and think Linkedin will do it's magic for you once you have clicked submit. ✅ Read the job adverts carefully until the end.. there is usually important information about the working style / location / criteria. Again, saves disappointment and your own time later on. ✅ Attitude - be pleasant and positive throughout. It doesn't matter if you are nervous or maybe you think your english isn't the best, people hire people they want to work with regardless of previous achievements. Finally - interviewing. ✅ Practice and prepare for your interviews well. It might seem a given but know your current stack in-side and out, and any current trends in your area of tech/expertise. ✅ Ask your recruiter or ask the internal HR/talent if there is anything you need to prep/research on. ✅ And of course, have a list of interesting / relevant questions for each opening, and not always the same formulaic ones. ✅ Practice the commons ones - why did you leave the last role, what is clean code for you, what are some projects you failed on / were successful at. Why. ✅ ✅ Please don't give up.

Role Update: Release Manager is actually a Tech Leader who can get things done right - UK Hedge Fund Essentially - release processes are non-existent in some places and buggered in others, with many high capable developers and wider tech folk pushing stuff into production with little to no mind for the larger ecosystem. Looking for somebody who can blend Release Management, Environment Management, Build/Deployment Management, Quality Management, Project Management and Business Analysis workstreams in a hugely complex and rapidly evolving trading tech landscape to: 1) Push back to technology (devs) - likely meeting resistance 2) Build core release processes to protect the integrity of the prod environment moving forwards 3) Traverse the landscape understanding the nuances and dependencies across the board, building plans to fit 4) Maybe hiring 1 or 2 people to work in your team 5) Ideally make friends along the way, but we'll take what we can get Deep understanding of how systems communicate/general tech fundamentals is essential BUT scripting/coding etc is NOT a part of this role. Comms / Stakeholder Management skills are essential General finance experience is preferred but this is a tech-focused role (despite sitting in the Front Office) Lots of scope, lots of impact. Returning to Java from Kotlin has me thinking again about nulls and null-safety. Kotlin has softened me somewhat on the subject of nulls, because its handling of them is safe and elegant: declaring a type as T? is more or less equivalent to declaring it as Maybe T in Haskell, and null is just a compact representation of None in that case. The compiler will simply reject anything that tries to pass null, or the unchecked value of a variable of nullable type, to a non-nullable receiver. It's one of the two things about the language I'm really going to miss (the other being the Ruby-like block syntax). After a phase of thinking Optional<T> should be used to do the same thing in Java, I'm actually swinging back more towards annotating optional fields and parameters as @Nullable, and relying on tooling (the IDE, build-time linting) to enforce Kotlin-like null-discipline. But there's a skeleton in the closet: older (pre-record-type) Java often has a lot of POJOs with default no-argument constructors lying around. You construct one, everything's null, you set fields one by one with the setters. It's much harder to impose null-discipline of any kind in this scenario. People depend on this behaviour, too - they create test value objects by newing up instances of POJOs and setting only the fields the code under test is interested in, and everything works. You can say "you should make it impossible to construct an object in an invalid state" all you like, but you're going to break all those tests if you actually take the ability to partially populate a value type away from them. Lombok doesn't help, either - there's no way to compile-time check that all the mandatory fields have been added to a builder before calling build(). And even with record types, the ability to use builders to supply field values by name, rather than relying on their order in the constructor signature, is going to be hard to take away from people working with value types with a dozen or more fields. Java is just an ever-burning tire fire around these issues, and always has been, and it's a major reason why "legacy" code tends to suck so much. At the moment the best I think I can do is try to promote a general pattern: if you can't ensure correctness on construction, validate correctness immediately after construction (and prevent illegal mutation after that). At least then you can eliminate ad hoc null checks downstream of validation, and be clear about when missing values are actually to be expected.

In our latest episode of byProduct Live I talked to George Fairhall from award winning start-up WAC. George has been on a 4 year journey as a non-technical founder to build the app from scratch, and has faced many challenges along the way.
