Check out the recent HealthTech article on "Defining Observability vs. Monitoring in Health" - HealthTech Magazine "Observability also includes distributed tracing, which happens during an application’s monitoring stage and involves forensics on an application. Distributed tracing lets healthcare organizations spot anomalies or inaccuracies in the data as well as performance issues," Kunney explains. “That distributed tracing technique is a way to start to holistically track and visualize the flow of those requests. Then you can understand, end to end, what happens in the system and try to identify where the bottlenecks and failures are,” Kunney says. How to improve #interoperability through #FHIR? Efficient interoperability is key to the democratization of data, but smaller EHRs have been slow to join the movement. CapMinds and Vozo have helped its #ehr clients especially smaller one to join the #fhir movement.

Check out the DiMe Seal program. "The DiMe Seal is a symbol of quality and trust, awarded to digital health software products that demonstrate performance against a comprehensive framework of standards and best practices in evidence, usability, privacy, and security with equity woven throughout." I am not usually a fan of yet another framework. There are a dozen digital health frameworks out there already, but I like what DiMe has been doing. They are a quality organization. Here’s some food for thought (literally) when weighing the pros and cons of the rapid development of AI in such areas as – well I guess pretty much everything.   Kasia Chmielinski, from the Data Nutrition Project – an organization that researches challenges of ethics and governance of Artificial Intelligence – has come up with a clever metaphor (that involves sandwiches) to make a case for the development of more transparent algorithms.   Chmielinski gives examples from her experience as an AI develop/researcher to illustrate that we too willingly accept and use AI products without knowing anything about the data that was used to build them. (This reminds me of a comic who noted that he would refuse to try a new food that his own mother would offer him, but would pop a free sample from a stranger in Costco without a second thought...) After pointing out the major concerns and challenges about AI data knowledge and transparency gaps, Chmielinski reports on the recent progress regulators and organizations such as Data Nutrition have been making (good, but lot more to do), and outlines some basic principles that need to be applied to make AI use safer and fairer. Knowing how the AI sausage was made and what it’s made of would be very reassuring. (I’m still going to accept any and all free food samples that come my way though...) #AI #modernIT

Transformer architecture revolutionized the field of NLP and brought about the likes of ChatGPT. Now you have an interactive tool to understand how it works! The video below by Eric Vyacheslav provides a brief walkthrough of an interactive tool developed by a team from Georgia Tech and IBM Research. It demonstrates how transformers process input to generate output (i.e. how ChatGPT takes your prompt and produces a seemingly logical response). In this talk, we highlight the various applications of machine learning to medicine, with an emphasis of what it takes to integrate software into a clinical workflow from early local deployment to multisite validation. From a commercialization perspective, we review the logistics of FDA clearance including 510k, De Novo classification, and premarket approval, as well as summarize various popular business models for algorithm distribution. Finally, we explore practical considerations and tradeoffs relevant to entrepreneurship as an academic physician and/or scientist. Speaker Peter D. Chang is a radiologist physician and full-stack software engineer with over a decade of experience building FDA-cleared and CE-mark certified tools used in hospitals around the world. At the University of California Irvine, Dr. Chang is a tenured Associate Professor and founding Director of the UCI Applied AI Research Center, a multi-specialty initiative to develop and integrate artificial intelligence technology across the healthcare system. He is also co-founder of multiple AI startups including most recently Avicenna.ai, a company focused on deep learning for medical imaging diagnosis, and collaborates closely with industry partners from Nvidia, Amazon, Canon Medical, Palantir, and Bayer.
