This is an interesting article because EHR companies, like Epic and Oracle's Cerner, have made siloing data a major part of their business model. Overall, I like EPIC’s ability to review records from other EPIC shops. It also has a nod to interoperability with its “Care Everywhere“ feature. However, this is often a disorganized and outdated collection of information. Using it requires a ninja level of both tech expertise and medical knowledge possessed mainly by younger physicians and chief residents. I am a fan (and advisor) of companies like Zus Health focused on user-friendly, comprehensive, and up-to-date interoperable health care data tools.

This new EHR will feature Oracle's clinical AI agent, voice-activated navigation, and Health Data Intelligence, which integrates patient data from over 300 sources to enhance clinical workflows and improve patient outcomes. The platform aims to replace traditional EHRs, which often dictate rigid workflows, with a more dynamic system that allows for personalized care plans. Oracle Health emphasizes that the new EHR is a complete reinvention rather than an upgrade of the previous Cerner system. Additionally, Oracle plans to become a Qualified Health Information Network to facilitate standardized data sharing across the healthcare ecosystem. When our FDA commissioner speaks, we listen 😊 Last year, it was terrific to read his thoughts on real world data for regulatory decision making (https://tr.vet/40mjvZw). The clear thinking helped us ensure that Truveta is providing our partners the data and analytics they require to exceed FDA expectations. Last week, he opined on “Artificial Intelligence in Health Care” – but this time, I found the lack of specifics less helpful. “The FDA has authorized almost 1000 AI-enabled medical devices and has received hundreds of regulatory submissions for drugs that used AI in their discovery and development.” I expect AI is being used in some way in the discovery and development of every drug and medical device right now. The paper concludes: “The FDA will continue to play a central role in ensuring safe, effective, and trustworthy AI tools to improve the lives of patients and clinicians alike. However, all involved entities will need to attend to AI with the rigor this transformative technology merits.” It’s encouraging to see the FDA emphasize the importance of rigorous oversight. Yet, clearer expectations would provide innovators a more defined path forward. Organizing to stop the despicable 1% is adding 30% of costs to everyone - especially #ruralhealth 👉 #EMR Transformation has put some hospitals out of business and in some communities, when the hospital closes, the whole community shuts down 👉 #Transformation this group sees on the horizon includes demand for change only intensifying, doing more with fewer providers, addressing #documentation challenges, #AI should focus on removing the hassle of the little things 👉 MAJOR RISK AHEAD - Will #transformation defined by CMS + #BigTech lead to a loss of simplifying the provider-patient experience? Will documentation to meet #VBC demands only escalate due to the 'potential' of what technology offers? And therefore, will health disparities only expand due to the inability of #ruralhealth to keep up? EHR good news There’s been plenty of articles about the challenges of EHRs, here’s a study that demonstrates the value of building standardization into the work through use of structured EHR notes for pre- and post-surgery handoffs. The communication between care providers during a patient transition between care teams is important for patient safety and the quality of care, especially with surgeries. This article shares the positive impact of improving and integrating the workflow and the EHR. I love that in addition to tracking the reduction in errors, they evaluated “information clarity and succinctness.” As a one-time consumer of EHR notes from clinicians, clarity and succinctness were much appreciated. Their conclusion was, “Handoff standardization can promote safe and high-quality intraoperative care.” Yeah! Let’s improve patient safety and the coordination of care across teams. Payers should consider joining a QHIN now. As an alternative to creating one-off DUAs and direct integrations with health systems, plans may opt to join a designated QHIN under TEFCA to support data exchange on a broader scale and gain access to accurate clinical data more quickly and affordably. When plans take steps to onboard with a QHIN, they should ensure their provider contracts specify a response to all QHIN queries for data, not just for treatment and individual access exchange purposes.

Price transparency in healthcare is a RIGHT guaranteed by federal law. Read that again. You read that correctly. It's not a privilege. We, as consumers of healthcare in the United States, have this right, protected and enshrined in federal law. The fact that the majority of hospitals and facilities (and health insurers) don't comply with these laws doesn't mean the laws don't exist. The right was established in order to recapture fairness in healthcare, to give patients the information they need to make informed decisions. Contrary to popular belief, it also gives the clinicians and facilities an opportunity to be fair to themselves. Price opacity in healthcare hurts patients, it hurts communities, it hurts independent practices. Don't be afraid to throw off the shackles of fear that have plagued you and kept you from helping your patients.
