Have you thought about the physical accessibility of your digital designs? Getting physical controls right is really hard, and industrial designers spend a lot of time learning about how to use data as a starting point for making design decisions. As we create digital designs that we interact with using our bodies, it's going to become important for digital designers to understand physical ergonomics too.

I added one slide at the end when I applied for the Maps role. Idea is it helps you confirm what you think this role is going to be about. AND, it tells the interviewers you understand the challenges and the landscape.

There’s always far more to do than time to do it, and it’s easy to get overwhelmed or spend time on less important tasks. In this episode, Jason Moore and Ephie Risho tackle this challenge head-on with a system called the personal kanban. At the time of this recording, Ephie had just come through a time when he had far more on his plate than time and was losing steam on everything. Revisiting these ideas and the book revitalized him and brought far more productivity to the rest of his week. The two key principles of Kanban are visualizing your work and limiting your work-in-progress. Doing these two things alone can make a massive difference in how well you manage your time. We're keenly aware that budgets aren't what they used to be and money isn't flowing' like it's 2012. I've seen a lot of companies, medium and large, pull back on experience strategy initiatives and hand it off to internal teams. Nothing wrong with that yet, they're struggling to make sense of how to approach the right problem, align changes with company directions, sift through user data, etc. When you aren't trained in a given profession, you're bound to stumble. So.... • What does an experience (ux) strategist DO!? • Do you need an experience (ux) strategist? Experience consultants ( 👉 me 👈 ) are an excellent way to "try before you buy". Be it to get things done at a reasonable cost or to test the UX waters. There's never a bad time to dip your toes into the waters and invest in the possibilities of experience design. Start out with a task then perhaps a small project. Then check to see if the needle is moving in the right direction. And what we do doesn't have to be for your users. It could be for your teams own sanity! "Hey team, can we dump this work on the ux strategist? We're swamped." UX is not just about creating design artifacts. Experience strategist's: • Analyze business opportunities • Dive deep into assessing problems • Build the approach to a solution • Align to business strategies • Validate audience needs • Establish success metrics • Create content structures • Build data migration plans • Compose micro-copy • Test and validate ideas & concepts • Interview teams, co-workers, executives ... and so much more. Human (and AI) behavior is constantly evolving. To stay on target with your businesses goals you must continually identify issues and explore opportunities. We're the persons in the watchtower, the sounding board looking out for you, the expert advisor to make sure you're on the right path. Leverage us. Leverage ux. Building a complete design system takes time, a lot of collaboration and patience between teams. Working together is an important component to success. You or your design team cannot do this alone. So understand, who in your business you need to collaborate with, who is needed as your supporter - ideally one or more higher up and peer - in your business. Finally, if you are privileged to lead and serve a team or department of people, understand the strengths and weaknesses of your team, put them to use in the correct areas of Design System development, ensure you don't lock in or build solid walls around your Design System, keep it organic, which will ensure it's cross business benefit. #strategy #designsystems #ux #designthinking #criticalthinking #collaboration #victorinox Victorinox

This got me thinking. I hear a lot of leaders say they're looking for cultural transformation, and want to shift in a direction that values reactivity, challenge confrontation, and collaboration. What they're describing is a design-driven culture. Many of these attributes are vital when UX is at the center. UX, The Difference Between Life And Death? In industries like healthcare and medtech, a poor user experience isn’t just suboptimal—it's dangerous.   When bad user experiences lead to inefficient work, increased user error, and less user engagement overall, it puts patients at risk.   Many of the problems result from the types of issues we deal with every day: from non-intuitive flows to problems with information hierarchy and prioritization.   In short, they are the result of designing a product only against a set of functional requirements instead of seeking to understand and then designing in support of users’ actual workflows.   We saw this a few years ago when we set out to redesign the displays for ventilators.   Physicians relied on the displays to monitor and manage the care of patients on life support. But an abundance of concern for patient safety had led to layers upon layers of legacy screens. The resulting displays were more noise than signal.   The simplified display that we designed reduced noise to signal, and enabled us to add new functionality that served physicians' actual workflows. If we're not talking about design maturity, agile process, or craft, then us designers are probably talking about ✨quality.✨ I certainly see my interviewer's eyes light up when I mention this magical word. "Design is the one that has to hold the quality bar," I tell them. But what if that didn't have to be true? For a truly high-quality product, I don't think it should be design holding the line. It has to be something baked into the organization - everyone holds the quality bar. Even though "quality" is a slippery thing to define, if we can define it and hold ourselves to it, we can reduce the tension in the org and start to think less about the mere baseline quality for the product and more about raising that bar - delighting the user. There's still a lot of magical thinking around how the value of design should be obvious to the business and why can't they get that? I totally understand our frustration; I'm tired of selling design in every job to every stakeholder and leader over and over for the last decade-plus. But as Erika says, why isn't anyone putting on their critical thinking hat and thinking about the problem as a designer? What are their goals? What outcomes do they want to see? What are their motivations? What are their pain points? Being a designer does not end with the wireframe, or the interview, or the synthesis. If you're not designing the business' experience with the design org, then you risk becoming an org that is nothing but outputs, or totally ignored. The work -- the praxis -- of design means you're always designing. The praxis of research is you're always researching. It's not us v them, it's just *us*. Get out of your ivory tower and do the damn work of building better experiences.
