Google 🍪 announcement + Oracle 💰 settlement signal a shift to Consumer-centric advertising. The recent #adtech developments at #Google and #Oracle may seem disconnected at first, but they signify a significant shift towards consumer-centric advertising. Alongside Apple, these tech giants are embracing privacy concerns and strategically repositioning themselves by prioritizing consumers. This move aims to reduce risks and drive growth by empowering consumers, advocates, and next-gen companies to innovate new approaches in place of legacy adtech. The ripple effect is evident, with companies like Amazon and Meta expected to follow suit to mitigate the legal and financial risks highlighted in the coverage of Oracle's recent settlement. I transitioned from retail and ecommerce to adtech two decades ago with a vision to revolutionize advertising by attacking the inefficiencies of offline methods adopted in the digital realm. Seemed like an easy fix but it turned out to be a long slog. I also saw the inherent risk from cookies that hold adtech together to this day. Now it seems the consumer is finally getting a seat at the advertising table, and they don't like cookies or spam. For advertising and publishing businesses, the time is ripe to pivot towards alternative strategies in alignment with this evolving landscape. Here’s a simplified roadmap 🗺️ 📍Start by testing the overall incrementality of each channel to find the average lift 📍Next test each channel’s prospecting and retargeting campaigns to understand incremental lift by tactic by channel 📍Then test specific campaign types (Pmax, ASC, DSA, etc.) to see how incremental each campaign type is 📍Finally, you can begin testing different components of your campaigns. Like: -attribution settings -bid strategies -broad match vs phrase match -different ad types or creatives Rinse and repeat 🛁 Tools like Stella makes this very easy to execute.

Consumers are increasingly aware of the value exchange between their data and the content they consume and many feel the benefits of personalized ads don’t always justify the privacy risks. Some good points are made by PubMatic’s Andrew Baron in AdExchanger’s latest Data-Driven Thinking column. Ironically, cookies were never that big of a problem in the first place—your humble, anonymous cookie is far less personal than a hashed email (which, as the FTC recently reminded us, is in fact still PII). But to the writer’s point, years of worrying about their impending deprecation have led to some very positive changes. First- and carefully curated and enhanced second- and third-party data will always yield better results, assuming you can protect the privacy of the consumers who produced it. An open market that self proclaims the quality, category and identity of its inventory will always be suspect. Add to it vendors that provide these attributes while taking a share of the revenue from publishers creates an environment for bad actors and wolves in sheep's clothing. Here is an idea, rather than relying on the supply side to effectively pay for these services which are in fact suspect why not have the buy side deploy their own solutions for them instead ? Whether they are the same vendors or in house at least there would be a direct line of accountability. 🤔 #adtech

The opaqueness of the programmatic advertising industry has always baffled me. For years, I heard about kickback fees and backroom deals that simply did not make sense; where did this money come from? Why isn't the advertising itself cheaper instead? The Google Antitrust Trial that kicked off yesterday exposes exactly that. Huge margins by controlling all aspects of a very complex and opaque system thanks to strategic acquisitions. Great overview of the different incrementality testing tools available to marketers across platforms.    All of these can be integrated with MMM, helping validate the model results, as well as providing insight into channels without much data.   At the same time, MMM can tell you what experiment you should run to measure true incrementality.
