Together with Dr Jussi Westergren, Emmy Network Fellow in Computer Science at Keble College, Oxford, I’ve written for Sifted on the importance of the budget tomorrow for the future of UK tech. It’s absolutely vital that the Government invests in developing the country’s next-generation compute capacity - or ‘supercomputers.’ Next-generation compute is set to drive breakthroughs in everything from drug discovery to financial modelling via supply chain and how we understand language in the near future. And will also create value for businesses and enable startups to accelerate their development exponentially. If the government does not adequately support home-grown supercomputing, the UK risks losing its status as a leading tech hub as its startups struggle to compete with rivals in Europe and the US. But by delivering funding and fostering a conducive wider investment environment, Britain could thrive in the supercomputing era. The depth of tech, research and business talent in this country is second to none, and the appetite from start-ups, corporations and researchers is there. A great deal of work has already been undertaken in Edinburgh in preparation for this investment. Additional schemes can be balanced around the country, and indeed there are a number of sites which would be suitable to host a supercomputer system. Bletchley Park is such a site: with obvious historical symbolism, geographic advantages and the recent host of the global AI safety summit. Alan Turing brought enormous benefits to humankind, and it would be a fitting tribute to him. Turing Machines still influence current computer science and the Turing Test is more relevant than ever. Close to Oxford, Cambridge and London - home to many of the finest brains in the world - the Bletchley Park SuperCompute is a project that must happen. Full piece here:

Some VC investors believe that brick and mortar - referring to a physical presence of some kind - should be avoided at all costs. Yet, the track record of clinic and hybrid care businesses in health care indicates otherwise. ==> One Medical (sold for $3.9 billion to Amazon), Oak Street (bought by CVS for $10.6 billion), Lifestance (IPO at $7.5 billion market cap), and PE-backed Premise Health (acquired by OMERS Private Equity for $1.1 billion) If a clinic is indicated as the optimal way to deliver care for that patient population, there are creative ways to build and operate them. One conversation we should be having more, especially in healthcare: is this an AI problem or a policy problem? A big challenge in American healthcare stems from the reality that our healthcare strategy changes with every administration. Throwing AI at problems that are well-addressed by policy innovation (e.g., AI for payer-provider RCM war) feels like a gross misallocation of resources. Solution sets are rarely zero sum – in truth, most problems will require policy, tech, and human interventions, but it's worth asking ourselves whether AI is the best solve when we have a multitude of options.

After seven years of leading decentralized identity management, the Sovrin Foundation is preparing for the likely shutdown of its MainNet ledger by March 31, 2025, or sooner (see the timeline section below for details). This difficult decision follows a careful evaluation of the network's sustainability. Key Reasons: 1. Decline in MainNet Usage: In 2024, no new Transaction Endorsers joined, and efforts to revitalize interest did not increase engagement or revenue. 2. Regulatory Uncertainty: Ambiguities around decentralized identity have discouraged investments, hindering Sovrin’s growth. 3. Technical Challenges: Resources invested in upgrading Steward nodes were diverted to address issues on the TestNet, straining resources. 4. The AI Hype bubble is bursting, A report (https://lnkd.in/e6Fxudb2) from the US Census Bureau’s Center for Economic Studies gives some indicators that adoption, the diversity of use cases, and impact on employment are falling below expectations, and research (https://lnkd.in/e_X3gK-R business applications show AI does not seem to be yielding a return on investment many executives had hoped. Shares of AI stocks have declined (https://lnkd.in/eVcvCmcq) significantly in the last three months as investors appear to have underestimated the operating costs (https://lnkd.in/eT-XrHyV) of generative AI systems and markets correct their estimates (https://lnkd.in/ewq9M-sM) of AI potential productivity gains. One of the major problems we’re seeing right now in the AI industry is the overpromising of what AI tools can actually do. There’s a huge amount of excitement around AI’s observational capacities, or the notion that AI can see things that are otherwise unobservable to the human eye due to these tools’ ability to discern trends from huge amounts of data. However, these observational capacities are not only overstated, but also often completely misleading. Having founded, advised & worked in tech startups, I understand the importance of excitement and enthusiasm for sparking innovation and the energy required to build new solutions. Critical thinking which is essential in our world is dramatically impeded by exposure to inaccurate information, especially when it is delivered confidently and compellingly by AI executives/"influencers", startup founders and other influential figures. However the misrepresentation and overinflation of AI capabilities and performance: “the staunch overestimation, exaggeration, and plain misrepresentation of AI found in news stories, press releases, and interviews that go beyond excitement into a realm of fantasy, manipulation, and speculation as fact.” Or in short, misdirection and fallacy, which we all should consider to be inherently harmful to publics and society by interfering with capacity for self-determination.
