A Cannes-opener for you this morning. My latest musings for The Media Leader UK It's a nice 26 degrees in Cannes. This is half the temperature in Delhi last month. Yes, half. There is a buzz around the Festival this year and let's hope the subject of sustainability gets the oxygen it needs among the plethora of competing topics (AI, obvs). We've reached a critical point in the climate change debate where the ad industry needs to demonstrate its commitment or remain exposed to outside scrutiny, especially after the UN announcement that it supports a global ban on fossil fuel advertising. Cannes is the closest to the UN that we have, so we need to talk about our own plan of action. This includes acting much more urgently to reduce media supply-chain emissions, especially in the digital world where so many of the emissions occur. The Media Agencies should accelerate their responsibility for this because the ad tech industry won't and advertisers need their agencies to show them how. You can't support carbon reduction as a business and then do nothing about it. That applies to advertisers, their partners and the whole supply-chain. There are plenty of resources available, several mentioned in my article but also Cedara, Responsible Marketing Agency to name but two more. The new Programmatic Transparency Benchmark from the Association of National Advertisers that is launched today provides some encouragement in that the number of websites and apps being used is falling (down by 50% vs the December 2023 report in their Jan-May 2024 sample and MFAs are down from 15% to 4%). But the number of SSPs used was the same (19), so still too many hops, too many bids, too many emissions. Overall the report shows that progress can be made and quickly with the right pressure. The agencies will have to figure out how to do this and not lose revenue. Let the debate continue but what is needed right now is a public declaration by the Media Agency groups that they won't let this continue. Maybe Cannes this week is a good time and place. The creative sector could be a core driver of U.K. and European growth in the next decade. But in making its case for government and investor support and helpful regulation it needs to move beyond the headline numbers on current economic impact or recent growth to make its case - in short it needs to get more creative.

I am quoted at length in Kendra Barnett's excellent piece in The Drum, examining the European Commission's inquiry into #Meta's protections for minor. Being on the front line telling stories of sustainable innovation is exciting but it’s such a new concept for so many firms and mistakes are made. Take innovation in the carbon markets for example. Due to the action of a few, sellers are under intense scrutiny, whilst well meaning companies have been caught out. Understanding the reputational opportunities and also the risks is critical in planning an effective PR strategy. Everyone who read and was outraged by Rebecca Stewart's excellent reporting for ADWEEK on sexual harassment at Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity, please WATCH THE FIRST 15 MINUTES of this talk I gave in 2017 at Kat McCaw Gordon's 3PercentConference (and Rebecca, please ask Emma and Julie to watch this too, because I want them to see that some of us have been fighting to change this for a very long time). In October 2017 when The New York Times broke the Harvey Weinstein expose, I triggered a #MeToo moment for the ad industry when I asked women to speak out and name the Harvey Weinsteins of our industry. An avalanche hit my inbox. The talk title below does not reflect the content, because I was so horrified by what I uncovered, that I rewrote my talk at the last minute to make the first half about that (btw, the back half is a great guide to where the money is in our industry). Please take just 15 minutes to watch now - and note my paraphrased quote, "If we're not at the table, we're on the menu." I've been attending a lot of virtual events Most, unfortunately, are painfully boring Wasted opportunities across the board For #climate orgs we have to do better And it is completely possible to do First - It not a fault thing but more loosing site of what possible. When we view humans as the walking emotions we are vs. receptacles for data dumps, how we approach the audience changes. Second - If we don't take time to do it right, when do we have time to do it over? Improving from a great attempt is far different from cleaning up a wasted effort. Third - Consider the washing clothes analogy. The laundry is not done after we wash and dry is it? We must fold and put away. If we don't do that we will wash again. Simply having an event with unorganized follow up is the same. When was the last time you attended a virtual event that blew your mind, left you searching for more information or desperately trying to reach the speaker to help your company? Climate Hive has something very special in the works to elevate the virtual event experience from start to finish.....

What does the political landscape look like based on brand preference? What brands are truly non-partisan? In a polarized US political climate, many brands are focused on being as non-partisan as possible - but the latest Harris Poll 100 data show an interesting picture of what brands resonate more or less with Democrats and Republicans. More brands in their 100 skew towards liberal preference, though what most strikes me is how hard it is to truly exclude a party. The appeal of brands that have taken a potentially divisive stance (Chick-fil-a, Nike, etc.) may sit further on one side, but still hold significant preference across parties. It's going to be an interesting week in comms. The 2024 US election presents unique challenges and opportunities for brands considering leveraging it for their PR. Here are some pointers: 1. Exercise extreme caution, as the election is likely to be highly divisive. Avoid explicit political stances, as research shows only 21% of US consumers want brands to take political positions. Instead, focus on nonpartisan messages encouraging civic engagement. 2. Leverage contextual advertising carefully, ensuring ads appear alongside appropriate content. Consider alternative channels to reach audiences, as news programming will likely be saturated with political content. Emphasise authenticity and brand values rather than opportunistically jumping on election trends. 3. Only explore cause-related marketing aligned with nonpartisan issues. Utilise social listening to understand audience reactions to election-related content. Focus on long-term strategy rather than sacrificing brand positioning for short-term gains. Remember, while the election presents engagement opportunities, the risks of backlash and negative associations are significant. Carefully weigh potential benefits against risks before incorporating election-related themes into marketing strategies.
