"Utilities have for decades “been using the same playbooks to build centralized generation and associated transmission and distribution to meet long-term demand needs. And it’s largely worked,” Shah said. “But with demand growth accelerating from data centers, new manufacturing, a surge of electric vehicles and electrified appliances ... an old grid operations paradigm needs to be updated.” After roughly two decades of stagnant electricity demand, the North American Electric Reliability Corp. now forecasts an approximately 15% to 20% increase in electricity consumption over the next decade, DOE noted in its brief. And by 2050, demand could double to meet net-zero emissions targets. Importantly, this demand growth is not unprecedented, according to Louise White, a senior consultant with the DOE’s Office of Technology Transitions and Loan Programs Office. Grid conditions were tight this week as 90-degree temperatures enveloped much of the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic regions. As a result, the Midcontinent Independent Sytems Operator (MISO) issued a Maximum Generation (Max Gen) Warning, PJM issued a Max Gen Alert, and Southwest Power Pool (SPP) issued an Energy Emergy Alert 1 (EEA1). During Max Gen Warnings and Alerts, grid operators warn power plant operators that electricity supplies on the grid are getting tight and instruct generation owners to take steps to ready their fleets to meet the moment. During an EEA1, all non-firm exports are curtailed, and all available resources are committed to meet demand. The impacts of climate change are no longer distant threats; they are here, now. In 2024 alone, New York State experienced 10 billion-dollar disaster events, stark evidence of these trends. Devastating storms, flooding, record breaking cold snaps and heat waves, and other extreme weather events are affecting New Yorkers' access to safe and reliable utility service. To address this rapidly evolving challenge head-on, the Commission recently approved Climate Change Resilience Plans from many of the State's utilities. Building on lessons learned from Superstorm Sandy and other major climate events, these plans represent the culmination of more than two years of work focused on ensuring future investments in our energy systems are designed to withstand the impacts of a changing climate. This is a continuous, iterative process. A research study, the investigation focuses on reducing carbon emissions in the electricity sector by utilizing ammonia in power plants and comparing it with traditional carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) technologies. 🔎 Key Insights *️⃣ Cost and Emissions: The study reveals that ammonia co-firing with high-rank coal has varying Levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) and life cycle greenhouse gas (LC-GHG ) emissions for gray, blue, and green ammonia. The Cost of Removing Utility Assets from Service ⚡️ Did you know? ⚡️ The average age (~16 years) and remaining life (~37 years) of electric distribution equipment owned by Maine's Versant Power and New Hampshire's Public Service Company of New Hampshire (PSNH) are nearly identical. But here's the twist: - Versant's depreciation rate for distribution is only 2.55% - PSNH's depreciation rate is a much higher 3.23% Why the difference? It all comes down to cost of removal: Versant estimates removal costs at about 29% of installed cost, while PSNH estimates nearly 46%! 🤔 This raises an interesting question: Is the cost of removing distribution equipment really lower in Maine than in the neighboring state of New Hampshire? A new report from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) looks at the technical potential of Grid Enhancing Technologies and suggests levers for stakeholders to accelerate deployment. In "Pathways to Commercial Liftoff: Innovative Grid Deployment" the DOE says: "These findings represent an urgent call to action for regulators, utilities and all grid stakeholders to evaluate the opportunity to deploy these types of solutions to improve the reliability and affordability of the grid today." "Liftoff will be achieved when utilities and regulators comprehensively value and integrate advanced solutions as part of core grid investment, planning and operations. There was major news last week on the New England Clean Energy Connect transmission line, which has been delayed by over three years from its initial in-service date. Avangrid (the project developer) has sued NextEra for antitrust violations, alleging that the company has committed "anticompetitive, unfair and deceptive business practices to foreclose competition for the supply of wholesale electricity on the ISO New England marketplaces." NextEra owns several large generation resources in the region and has almost certainly profited from the higher wholesale electricity costs that have resulted from NECEC's delay. The lawsuit includes a long list of accusations, including "overt acts that constitute monopolization, attempted monopolization, civil conspiracy, intentional interference with contract, sham petitioning, dark-money deception, and false and misleading statements." Avangrid alleges damages of at least $350 million, and is seeking three times the damages, plus interest and legal costs. The saga outlines one of the key challenges for transmission development in the region and in the country: incumbent generators can use a wide range of regulatory, legal, and political mechanisms to gum up the development process, potentially delaying or blocking projects. Transmission expansion will be crucial to the clean energy transition, so clean energy advocates would be smart to learn from this fight. I'm curious if the Massachusetts Attorney General's Office will take action on behalf of ratepayers in the state. The delay appears to have cost ratepayers well over $500 million, along with a likely increase in power system emissions. The AGO declined to comment on this, so we'll see where it goes.
