How do you ensure your smart kitchen appliances are secure from hackers?
Imagine the conversation with your boss when forensics experts determine the ransomware that shut your company down and cost millions in downtime and recovery infiltrated your corporate network through your "smart" coffee maker while you were working remotely... Most IoT devices are a privacy and security dumpster fire and should be avoided. But it's getting harder to buy devices that are not "smart", if you must buy one, don't connect it. If you "must" connect it do the following: - Get a router that supports VLANs - Block IoT devices from work devices with a VLAN - Change ALL default passwords - Disable ALL unnecessary services - Enable regular software updates on ALL devices - Use the highest level of encryption supported

Strong, unique passwords for each account are absolutely critical in our digital world. Creating and managing strong, unique passwords (>=12 characters) can be cumbersome... Don't store passwords in a browser, get a secure password manager like 1Password, Dashlane, or Keeper to generate and securely store a strong, unique password for each account. Ensure that you have a VERY strong password for your password manager, ideally a passphrase only you'd know. Then enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) aka two-factor authentication (2FA) on your password manager, (even better, on ALL your accounts) so even if bad actors guess, crack or brute force your credentials, they still need the MFA code to access your account. Do it today!

How do you ensure your smart kitchen appliances are secure from hackers?
Most so called "smart" devices are a three alarm privacy and security dumpster fire. Manufacturers focus on speed to market, market share, ease of use, and data collection (to monetize your data) at the expense of privacy and security. Most IoT devices are insecure out of the box, difficult to configure correctly, difficult to update, and vendors often stop providing software updates in a few years leaving them vulnerable to attack. And don't forget the constant Orwellian data collection that puts your data at risk. Echoing others here, the best option is to avoid IoT devices entirely. If you must buy one, don't connect it to your network. If you "must" connect it, VLAN it, change the default password and update it regularly.

Missouri's in CISA's Region 7, along with Kansas, Nebraska, and Iowa. CISA is the Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency, a federal government organization. A fact sheet from 2021 about the region talks about the incident response and assessment services provided by the Kansas City office for the entirety of the region. Cybersecurity is a piece of the services but certainly not all. The fact sheet mentions chemical security and event support and workshops targeting active shooter training. If you have not heard of CISA, visit the website at cisa[.]gov. I'm poking into CISA because of the weekly news bulletins it offers. You can find those, categorized by week, here: https://lnkd.in/gTs2MTDY. Small businesses who use endpoint detection and response and threat feeds (or their service providers do) are alerted whenever a serious vulnerability ends up on these lists that impacts their environment. It's well beyond antivirus protection and often doesn't cost much more. Talk to your local managed service providers to see which one is the right fit for you. You're going to need help within the next year if your office is running Windows 10 on its machines. So start now. (More on Windows 10 later in October). Enjoy your Sunday!

🔍 Safeguarding Sensitive Data: A Guide to Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) Management 🔍 At InterSec Inc., we understand the critical importance of safeguarding sensitive data for the Department of Defense (DoD) and its contractors. #Controlled_Unclassified_Information (CUI) is a vital component in this effort. Here’s what you need to know about CUI and how to handle it effectively. 🔒 What is CUI? CUI refers to unclassified information that requires safeguarding and dissemination controls according to laws, regulations, and government-wide policies. 🔒 Types of CUI 1. 🔹 CUI Basic: Requires protection but lacks specific handling guidelines. 2. 🔹 CUI Specified: Has additional controls and restrictions defined by law, regulation, or policy. 🔒 Why is the CUI Program Necessary? Before the CUI Program, different federal agencies had inconsistent ways of handling unclassified information, leading to collaboration difficulties. The CUI Program, established by Executive Order 13556, standardizes these processes, ensuring proper protection and appropriate sharing. 🔒 Lifecycle of CUI 1. 📄 Create: CUI is recorded on paper or entered into an information system. 2. 🔍 Identify & Designate: Determine if information falls under CUI categories. 3. 🏷️ Mark/Label: Clearly mark documents with “CUI” or “CONTROLLED”. 4. 📦 Store: Use NIST 800-171 compliant systems or controlled environments. 5. 📤 Disseminate: Share only with authorized holders according to dissemination controls. 6. 🗑️ Destroy: Render CUI unreadable and irrecoverable. 7. 🔓 Decontrol: Remove CUI designation when it no longer requires safeguarding, per applicable regulations. Examples of Limited Dissemination Controls - 🚫 NOFORN: No foreign dissemination - 🏛️ FED ONLY: Federal employees only - ✋ NOCON: No dissemination to contractors Protecting CUI CUI must be safeguarded using physical and electronic barriers: - 🔒 Physical Barriers: Locked doors, sealed envelopes, controlled areas. - 💻 Electronic Barriers: Dedicated network drives, protected file folders, intranet sites. 🔒 At InterSec Inc., we are committed to helping DoD contractors navigate the complexities of CUI management.
