This certainly a step in the right direction. We often think that AI will replace the instructional designer, but I really think it is going to open doors to a personalized learning journey. We still have a ways to go before that but imagine being able to orchestrate learning journeys more precisely by role, elevation, learning preferences, skills gaps, tech tool availability, experience etc in a fraction of the time. Technical Writer vs. Instructional Designer: What’s the Difference? Many people assume that technical writers and instructional designers have the same role—after all, both create materials to help people understand complex information. But these roles have unique skill sets and goals! 🖋️ Technical Writer • Focuses on documenting processes, systems, or products in a clear, concise way. • Creates user manuals, help guides, and product documentation. • Main goal: Ensure the end-user can understand and use the product without issues. 🎓 Instructional Designer • Specializes in creating learning experiences for a targeted audience. • Develops training programs, e-learning courses, and instructional materials. • Main goal: Facilitate learning and knowledge retention through effective design and engaging content. Why it matters: Both roles are essential for a comprehensive learning experience. You have research...how do you get people to read it? Engage? Dive deeper? Announce it with video 📣🎥 Along with Dr Philippa Hardman, Synthesia we surveyed over 400 Instructional Designers for the 2024 State of Instructional Design Survey. (...and you can read it with the link below in the comments) Now is the hard part of making sure people see it. It takes 3 minutes to make your findings stand out with a video announcement: 1. Drop your PDF into NotebookLM > click "Notebook Guide" 2. Generate an Audio Guide > Download 3. Drop the .wav file into Synthesia 4. Grab the first minute (establishes context and WIIFM for the report) 5. Add your avatars > Generate video It's difficult to get folks to engage with your work reports, industry trends, company policies and announcements... ...but a step to delivering that work is being able to market it's value yourself. People don't always want to read. Video can help. It could be that many IDs either don't know any better or their hands are tied. I have worked with many, many SMEs who believe ID only assemble what they are told..ie they dictate every aspect of the course. IDs are just "secretaries " for the SME. IDs are ordered to follow instructions if they want to stay employed . IDs may not know the particular content they are working with, but they are masters of presentation, they know how to keep learners engaged and they know how to assess learning has taken place. They know how to parse out material and allow different learning levels to excel. One of the biggest obstacles is getting SMEs to understand that we actually know more about presenting their material then they do. I call it "stay in your lane" As an SME you tell me the technical aspects of the material and I will tell you the best way to present it. You stay in your lane and I will stay in mine.

Happy post back-to-school/planning for the 1st quarter of 2025 season! A Day in the Life of an EdTech Assessment Product Leader (get kid to school +manage her on missed assignments and art commission deliveries, connect with hubby, snuggle puppies) -6 scrum team sprint exit (share out of 2 weeks of coding) -state export specs confirmation – each state is unique -1x1 with the head of the instructional products to ensure coordination (the products all have to talk to each other easily and accurately) -1x1 with head of one set of computer adaptive tests (CATs) (serves ~13 million students yearly, demands perfection) -bid strategy meeting for a specific upcoming large-scale opportunity -go-to-market meeting with the leads of all the assessment portfolios to coordinate planning and messaging as we bring new features to production -3 meetings I either can’t talk about or couldn’t attend b/c I was booked -schedule plumber, worry about roof, get lunch while on a call, worry about nonprofit commitments, worry about engineering capacity, worry about individuals at work, worry about kid -retro on an algorithm update release with psychometrics and product (retro=what could we have done better/differently) -1x1 with head of state deployments, curriculum-based assessments (helps us find skill gaps), progress monitoring (weekly/biweekly testing of at-risk students on their specific skill gaps) -meeting about one of major assessment suites hosted by product and engineering to be transparent about strategy with: customer support, account management, training, training materials authors, marketing, instructional product leadership, government affairs, user experience/design, psychometrics, research, data services/exports -meeting about engineering and product development process improvements -bid strategy meeting about an upcoming strategic opportunity (workout to release tension and get those endorphins going, make dinner, connect with kid/husband, CHILLAX with the dogs) REPEAT

Authoring tools do not an instructional designer make! This remains one of the videos on Instructional Design Tips I am most pleased to have made. Too often, our industry, and getting started in it, is oversimplified to learning a particular piece of technology. Be it an authoring tool, LMS, or more recently an AI thingy, we must remember that technologies change. They fall in and out of favour and usefulness, so we must avoid tying our value to any one of them. Instead, whether you are just starting in L&D or are a seasoned pro, universally applicable skills remain the best foundation. What skills are you working on right now? The Real Skills of Instructional Designers Often, I see job ads that list requirements for instructional designers or digital learning designers, emphasizing the need for understanding design tools such as Adobe Premiere. However, this is a misunderstanding. While an instructional designer may have a good sense of visual perception, they are not graphic designers. The core tasks of an instructional designer involve analyzing learning needs and deciding how to design the learning journey. It's about understanding how to facilitate knowledge transfer and creating impactful learning experiences. This work requires a deep understanding of educational theories, learner behavior, and the application of various instructional strategies. We rely on authoring tools like iSpring, Captivate, Rise 360, and Articulate to build interactive and engaging content, not specifically on graphic design tools. HR professionals should look at these requirements more deeply. Instructional design often involves tasks that go beyond the surface level of visual design. By aligning job requirements with the true nature of the role, we can attract the right talent and create more effective learning solutions. Synthesia just published the results from our Future of Instructional Design survey (2024). Here's my hot take on the top 5 key take-aways: 🚀 Almost one third of ~400 respondents identify as subject matter experts who design courses, rather than instructional designers who work with SMEs. 🚀 Articulate still dominates the tooling landscape, but emerging AI tools are gaining traction - suggesting a shift in the industry's tech stack. 🚀 A whopping 84% of instructional designers have tried ChatGPT & 57% of instructional designers use it daily in their work. 🚀 Despite the growing automation of parts of the process, most instructional designers still complete ~16 projects annually, which is about average. Meanwhile, 38% of instructional designers still have to turn down projects due to a lack of capacity, suggesting that the efficiency gains of AI are yet to impact our day to day work significantly.
