"We have too many reports, we need a report to help us summarize our reports." Analyst creates a report with the key metrics. "No - I need extra metrics in the summary report, otherwise there's no context." Analyst adds requested metrics "No - this is too complicated. I can't make sense of everything with all these numbers! I need a new report to summarize the summary report!" And the cycle starts again. As analysts and data scientists, we're told to be partners, not order takers, but at the end of the day our success (aka career progression) is based on how our stakeholders feel about us, and if we go around telling them they're wrong to want ANOTHER summary report with the same metrics, we're not going to do ourselves any favors when the "who should we promote" question rolls around. It's absolutely our job to educate our stakeholders, but sometimes the incentives are set up all wrong for us to have the difficult conversation necessary to do so. Just an observation.

All #datavisualization practitioners should have a style guide for any series' of visualizations or if desiring to create their own brand. Companies sometimes have templates, often focused on the brand's colors and logos.

A fun #datavisualization that doesn’t get much attention. I think it visualizes distributions in an easier to read format than box-and-whisker plots alone.

"Self-Service Analytics Changes the Game for Business People!" That was the title of an email I got a few days ago and it was filled with delicious buzz words like "time spent," "AI," "unlock value," and "power of analytics." Mmmmm Here's the thing... Self-service isn't enough. We need to empower our teams and our companies to USE the data they can self-serve. Giving teams access to data when they don't understand it or and don't know how to use it doesn't unlock any secret hidden value. We should spend as much time empowering our teams through good communication and training as we do developing dashboards and models. #data #communication #analytics #businessintelligence

I just discovered that Tableau calculations can use fields from different tables without needing explicit relationships or joins. This is incredibly handy for visualizations using a data template, such as a waffle grid table. If you use the right predictive model, you can have an outsized influence on the "movable middle." Here's how our approach is moving the needle for our clients: 1. Model Selection: We're flexible. Whether it's a regression model or a sophisticated machine learning algorithm, we choose what works best for the specific challenge at hand. 2.Customer Ranking: Our models rank customers from most to least likely to exhibit a desired behavior. 3. Decile Division: We split these rankings into 10 equal groups, or deciles. From there, we can lump customers into one of three categories: -Top Deciles: They'll likely engage without extra incentives. -The Middle: This is often where the greatest opportunity lies. -Bottom Deciles: Unlikely to engage regardless of efforts. We focus on that potentially movable middle group. By testing different offers, messages, and channel mixes, we can influence behavior where it matters most. By understanding where customers fall in these deciles, we can optimize marketing efforts and allocate resources for maximum impact. #DataDrivenMarketing #CustomerInsights

I love this TED talk. It changed my approach to sharing data. It's worth a watch, but my favorite part is a G.K. Chesterton quote "We are perishing for want of wonder, not for want of wonders." There are many levels to the quote, but today, it's particularly true of data. We don't have enough insight, despite drowning in data and information. When we talk about data, we need to have focus, creativity and playfulness and to tie it back to reality so it's meaningful for our audience. We expect the data to speak for itself, but data only speaks when we've carefully provided context and clarity on what the data is, where it comes from and what it suggests the next steps should be.
