A large gap exists between the accounting departments of large or publicly traded companies and smaller or private companies. In our past 25 years of consulting we’ve noticed that more often than not, these smaller/private companies will fill the gap with Bookkeepers, rather than the degreed Accountants/CPAs they require. The problem is that companies operating under $10 or even $20 million often can’t (or wont 🙃) afford the degreed accountants, much less a Controller or CFO. We've seen this happen repeatedly in companies of all sizes and industries. The talent pool for these roles is diminishing rapidly and the professionals remaining are demanding higher salaries. But ALL companies need timely U.S. GAAP financial reporting, cash flow forecasting, and budgeting. These things are essential when your company inevitably wants to work in bankers, investors or potential buyers in the future. What do accountants think about the upcoming election? Accounting Today and our parent company Arizent Research surveyed accountants and other financial professionals. Accountants’ current voting intentions for the 2024 presidential election more or less mirror how they voted in 2020 — allowing for those who are still undecided, they’re relatively evenly split between the two major parties — but they are agreed that fiscal, economic and tax issues are the biggest priorities for whoever wins. It’s not uncommon for companies to have their financial statements prepared externally. The AICPA has just issued an exposure draft to better cover this area when your financials are done externally. For those companies who perform those services, heads up. "The Illinois CPA Society has a question: Is the accounting profession damaging its own pipeline? According to the ICPAS's new "Re-Decoding the Decline" report, the top barrier to CPA licensure is time — not the 150-hour credit rule. How to effectively retain accounting talent in 2024 ⬇️ Research from the Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants (PICPA) indicates a rising need for nuanced retention strategies. After surveying both current and former CPAs and other accounting professionals, researchers found: - It's not just about the money 💵: Employees tended to depart from their roles due to a combination of factors including work-life balance, benefits, and recognition from management. - Many professionals are here to stay 🤝: Plenty of the professionals that were surveyed wanted to stay in their profession and with their employer. - Compensation and workload management are key 📍: Professionals want more flexibility over location and working hours.
