Highly recommend Casey Gollan’s latest talk about research platforms. Casey shares some SaaS vendor challenges, then points to emerging options for creating purpose-built internal tooling. While writing my "Stop Wasting Research" book -- where research repositories are a key enabler -- I’ve struggled a bit with how to cover tools. 🔍 Just read an analysis by Nobel laureate Daron Acemoglu on AI's economic impact. His research offers a counterpoint to the AI hype cycle: Instead of the revolutionary economic transformation many predict, Acemoglu estimates AI will deliver a modest 1.1-1.6% GDP increase over the next decade (Though it doesn't take into account the clashing waves of AI, quantum computing, and synthetic biology, which Mustafa Suleyman greatly captured in his book "The Coming Wave" - developments that may significantly amplify this impact) . Why? Because AI's current trajectory focuses heavily on worker replacement rather than augmentation. 𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗸𝗲𝘆 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝘂𝘁: 1. We're overemphasizing "so-so technology" - solutions that merely replace workers without significant productivity gains - instead of developing tools that enhance human capabilities. 2. Market forces alone won't guarantee broad economic benefits from AI. Historical parallels from the Industrial Revolution suggest intentional policy choices and worker advocacy were crucial for widespread prosperity. 3. Slower, more deliberate AI adoption might actually lead to better long-term outcomes by allowing time to address potential harms and optimize implementation. 𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝗔𝗜 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘆𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗿𝘀, 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝘂𝗴𝗴𝗲𝘀𝘁𝘀 𝘀𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀: 1. Redirect R&D toward human-AI complementarity rather than replacement  2. H ere’s how I envision it being applied effectively: Automated Usability Testing - With Claude, I can simulate user interactions, such as clicking buttons and navigating menus, to identify usability issues. For instance, I could automate the testing of an e-commerce site by simulating a user's journey from product selection to checkout, pinpointing areas where users might struggle. This ensures that the interface works seamlessly for everyone. Performance Evaluation - By replicating user actions under varying loads, Claude can conduct performance testing that I would find invaluable. Imagine simulating high traffic on a banking app to identify bottlenecks during peak usage times—this capability ensures smooth functionality when it matters most. A/B Testing - Claude can automate A/B tests by interacting with different versions of a UI. I could gather data on user preferences and engagement levels, providing insights into which design resonates better across diverse user groups. Accessibility Testing - This AI can also check for compliance with accessibility standards by navigating through applications and identifying elements that may not be accessible to all users. For example, it could evaluate whether all interactive elements are keyboard-navigable, ensuring inclusivity for everyone. Continuous Feedback Loop - As Claude interacts with the interface, it can provide real-time feedback on user experience issues. This allows me to make iterative improvements based on observed behaviors rather than assumptions, leading to a more refined product. I truly believe that these capabilities will enhance the UX testing process significantly, resulting in improved user satisfaction and engagement across various demographics and cultures. Had an engaging conversation with Richard H. Miller, author of UX for Enterprise ChatGPT Solutions, in the latest episode of the Ready, Test, Go. podcast. We discussed some guiding principles for designing high-quality generative AI applications, including practical testing considerations and the fundamental importance of usability. My top takeaways: - Human-centered design is paramount. #GenerativeAI solutions should be designed with a deep understanding of human psychology, interaction patterns and cognitive needs. Whatever success criteria you define, users must feel heard and understood. - Metrics drive improvement. Go beyond the basics to leverage a range of qualitative and quantitative measures, including semantic similarity, answer correctness and user feedback. The score initial score isn’t important; improvement is. Iteratively refine your AI models to ensure they meet specific performance benchmarks and user expectations. - #Continuouslearning is essential. Stay informed about the latest advancements, research and best practices to adapt your design thinking, dev processes and testing strategies. Modern-day generative AI has its limitations, but stay nimble and evolve your approach over time. Reflecting on some recent advising sessions, something I don't see talked about as much is how critical it is to have an incredibly strong, unified* Design leadership team in order to build an even stronger design team and product. Why this is so critical 👇 What I’ve seen happen when you DON’T have that unified Design leadership team: 1. Massive gaps in the user experience – Let’s start with the obvious one. When Design leaders are staying neatly in their corners and not communicating, the experience degrades pretty quickly. Especially where the "seams" of their teams/org are. We've all seen (and let's be real…probably have been guilty of at times) the navigation structure that clearly shows the org chart vs. what users actually need. This can happen way too quickly without that unified team. 2. A lack of Design’s ability to influence product direction — The best Design leadership teams work together, pushing each other, to have a unified perspective of what the big things are to tackle in the user experience that leverages the unique expertise of the Design functions, all the way from it being grounded in research, to it having a compelling narrative. When they have that unified perspective and are all consistently sharing that perspective, it is so much easier for cross-functional partners to understand and buy-in on it. 3. Design works against Design — When Design leaders don't have a shared perspective on what is important (both in the user experience and the culture), don't have the right level of visibility into each other's work, or even worse, when they don't have mutual respect for each other, it leads to the leaders (mostly) inadvertently working against the progress of the other leaders/teams vs. together toward a unified vision. 4. A limit to the flexibility and scalability of the Design team – To build great experiences at scale, having the flexibility of shifting people to focus on different parts of the product is critical. When the culture and processes are dramatically, instead of it being exciting for that person to focus on a new space, it is incredibly disorienting, slows everything down, and can quickly lead to burnout. *A note on when I say "unified". I don't mean at all that they agree on everything. In fact, the opposite. They push each other the most, early and often. However, they have shared respect, cultivated by their leader, and shared responsibility around aligning within a timely manner. THEN they support each other in any way they can with hurdles they may each face (e.g. cross-functional buy-in or team-wide communication). ——— Is this interesting? AI Literacy - the best summary I've seen! Jennifer Stojkovic and Daniel Dominguez Figaredo. This report speaks to tech and non-tech readers about a critical topic many have been slow to acknowledge - the awareness levels of AI by ordinary people. "This paper discusses the characteristics of the “stakeholders first” approach, a framework based on the design of educational initiatives in the area of responsible AI, to address two limitations identified in the literature on AI literacy projects: (1) an emphasis on K-12 students, and the lack of responsible AI offerings for citizens and university students; and (2) an emphasis on the technical components of algorithmic systems and the lack of attention to the social implications of AI." What could change regarding WCAG and ADA guidelines? With all the changes in DC, we're all wondering if these rules can be rolled back. Whats not changing: ADA compliance has bipartisin support. Its unlikely that the core requirements for video accessibility (closed captioning) will go away. What could change: The timeline and enforcement approach could shift. Deadlines might shift a bit. Either way, Everyone deserves to access and understand the decisions that shape their community. Caption your stuff.
