I find it hard to believe that with millions of EVs entering the market and the proliferation of AI compute that PGE is actually going to have excess capacity in 2040 without any additional generation from 3rd parties. I am also curious if there are enough transmission lines and if PGE views that as someone else’s problem. I track Venture Capital funding so you don't have to! 1KOMMA5°, a German home electrification startup secured a substantial $156 million (€150 million) pre-IPO round co-led by G2 Venture Partners and the California State Teachers' Retirement System (CalSTRS), and saw participation from 2150, Norrsken VC, Hamilton Lane, b2venture, Eurazeo and other existing investors. Focused on providing end-to-end solutions for residential solar, energy storage, and EV charging. This funding aims to fuel their expansion across Europe and Australia as well as development of their energy management software, with plans for a potential IPO in 2026. InoBat: The EV battery maker has charged up its growth with a $104 million (€100 million) Series C investment round. The round was backed by strategic investors Amara Raja Energy & Mobility Ltd and Rio Tinto, with contributions from GOTION HIGH-TECH, Slovakia's sovereign Lilium, Bromo Capital, and more. InoBat aims to scale production of European-designed battery cells, launch an energy storage business with Gotion, and expand into Slovakia, Serbia, and Spain. Bluenote, a GenAI platform for biotech companies, secured $10 million in funding, with Lux Capital leading the round. Additional investors include Elad Gil, Anthropic & Menlo Ventures' Anthology Fund, McKesson Ventures, Avichal Garg/Electric Capital, Moxxie Ventures, Carbon Silicon Ventures, and notable figures in AI and life sciences like Othman Laraki, Fidji Simo, and Mike Nohaile. Mindgard, an AI security startup has raised $8 million, led by .406 Ventures & saw participation from Atlantic Bridge, WillowTree Investments, IQ Capital, and Lakestar. Mindgard offers Dynamic Application Security Testing for AI (DAST-AI) to identify and fix AI-specific vulnerabilities. @Tenor, an AI-driven leadership development platform, has closed a $5.4 million seed round, led by Base10 Partners, with participation from Reach Capital and other angel investors. Tenor helps managers refine their communication skills using realistic voice AI simulations. Habacus, a student-focused fintech, has secured $5.2 million (€5 million) in funding, with P101 leading the round and participation from CDP Venture Capital SGR. Habacus provides financial services aimed at the student population and seeks to grow its community to 100,000 students by 2026, while expanding its AI tech + service offerings. Tetsuwan Scientific, focused on autonomous robots for science experimentation, raised a $2.7 million pre-seed round led by 2048 Ventures. Additional investors include Carbon Silicon, Everywhere Ventures, and angel investors. They're building AI-powered robots, and their first AI-powered robot is already being used in a rare disease gene therapeutics lab. WAYMO -- WAYCOOL or GHOST RIDER? If you preside in San Francisco, Santa Monica or Phoenix you are now seeing driverless Waymo taxies making their way through town on an ever-increasing basis. The network is expanding, and I can honestly say that in the Santa Monica / West Los Angeles area I have not driven anywhere in the last two months without seeing one of them on the road every time. In fact, sometimes they are so prevalent that there might be three in a row waiting at a stop light. It still is kind of spooky seeing cars moving around with no driver, or anyone for that matter, in the front seat. It's not exactly the same as the Headless Horseman but it does conjure up that image in my imagination. I have not taken a ride in one, but several family members have and report their satisfaction. Waymo is a division of Alphabet (GOOGL). I have not seen any visible evidence of General Motors (GM) Cruise vehicles which I understand are still being road tested, while Tesla (TSLA) has been projecting their autonomous vehicle vision for some time. For now, Tesla seems to be behind but that could change quickly. GM is likely to use their own branded vehicles, and it would seem that Tesla will likely do the same. However, Waymo technology could be outfitted on any cars. That seems like a big advantage, staying out of the car business and just being like the "Intel/Microsoft" inside personal computers which is a much higher margin business. There has been a lot of noise in the business journals and chat rooms about a Waymo initial public offering but nothing from Alphabet itself. They recently concluded a $5.6 billion investment round; see TechCrunch post below. The autonomous race is on, and it will be expanding rapidly from here on out. I just wonder if we will ever see an autonomous police vehicle stop a wayward autonomous taxi and write it up for some violation as yet unknown. Friends, Q2 was a quarter of progress and learning for us at HawkTower, where we invest in early-stage startups applying breakthrough computing technologies to maximize California's natural resource markets. Our focus is on technology-enabled interventions (e.g., AI-enabled geospatial radars for lithium-ion batteries in the waste stream) for critical, market-level imperatives (e.g., disaster prevention) that can drive rapid commercial adoption (e.g., placed on every recycling truck in the world). Team San Diego! I though you may find this as surprising as I did...we are not alone. Read this quick article from Jon Prentice's (Silicon Valley Bank) interview with with James Newell (Voyager Capital), published in GeekWire on Seattle's innovation ecosystem....they lament the SAME issues as we do in San Diego: * Lack of angel investors, (Especially, it calls out, given the local giant tech co's) * "We need low-conviction check writers." * Lack of "cachet associated with being an angel investor" - We have similar efforts (as described in the article) to drum up angel activity: NuFund Venture Group and, Interlock Capital (read the article and you'll see why the Interlock effort is tops as relates to "paying back into the ecosystem") Connect.org strives to 'connect' innovative companies with investors of all types (angel, VC, PE...) - just see "Innovation Day". Introducing the 2024 LA Hard Tech 50! 🚀 The momentum has become unstoppable for the ecosystem of entrepreneurs and engineers building in the hardware industrial ecosystem in Southern California. The story goes back over 100 years to the days of early aviation pioneers Glenn Martin, Allan Lockheed, Jack Northrop, and Howard Hughes, and to the founding of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory just before World War II. The macroeconomic, geopolitical, and technological tailwinds have been brewing for years, and the talent pool that accumulated in the legacy primes and subs became a tinderbox, where SpaceX served as a match and lit the industry on fire. The Algorithm, hardcore work ethic, and sense of responsibility and ownership instilled in SpaceX engineers built a uniquely entrepreneurial culture that is churning out new startup founders, and we’re now seeing second-order centers of excellence like Anduril and Hadrian. New startups are being founded almost every week in LA across space, defense, manufacturing & industrial automation, and energy & critical resources. The list was harder to write this year as the ecosystem has grown. The 2024 LA Hard Tech 50 includes 30 companies that were on last year’s list, and 20 new entrants who made a big impact this year. Autonomous Vehicle (AV) funding is surging, according to PitchBook with Q2 2024 seeing $2.9 billion invested in AV startups - the highest since Q3 2021. While self-driving cars grab headlines, innovative startups are finding unique applications beyond passenger vehicles. Key developments: - Supply chain optimization: Outrider is revolutionizing yard operations with autonomous electric vehicles, addressing a $60 billion market. - Specialized transport: Pyka's autonomous planes for cargo and Gatik's local distribution trucks are gaining traction. - Safety & efficiency: Evitado Technologies automates airside operations, mitigating airport collision risks. Of course, more established companies such as Lyft & Uber are working on AV rideshare integration via partnerships with Waymo, BYD, Zoox, and others. Breaking down our latest newsletter section by section, starting with our expanded focus in Deep Tech: --- We have built expertise in the robotics sector, and will continue to double (and triple) down on investing in this category, but we have been increasingly finding that robotics is naturally steering us into two exploding adjacent areas: Aerospace, and Advanced Manufacturing (which we define as industrials, semiconductors, materials science, and energy production). Stepping back, this expansion makes perfect sense. Robotics is an inherently horizontal platform - meaning it can be applied productively across multiple industries. This quality, paired with the fact that robotics has long shown the highest TRLs of any deep tech technology, makes it a kind of “gateway” to other sectors in the hard sciences. Now with the recent breakthroughs in AI for robotics, growing semiconductor demand, and the resurgence of aerospace and defense tech, we are seeing a dramatic uptake of robotics and relevant technologies in both advanced manufacturing and aerospace.
