This isolates the local controller from the motor and protects the circuit board against power surges. The local controller allows effective field maintenance using field-replaceable components. Its circuit board is preassembled in a rugged, weather-proof cabinet to minimize the time and work required to prepare and install it in the field. The typical service life of this durable local controller is expected to be 30 years.

According to UtilityDive, the North American Electric Reliability Corp. (NERC) board adopted two new standards that focus on extreme weather reliability. "The board also adopted three updates to standards modifications to bolster critical infrastructure protection and energy assurance." Some of these new standards, such as TPL-008-1, focus on improving how planning coordinators and transmission planners prepare for the unforeseen impacts of extreme weather, while others, such as BAL-008-1, require balancing authorities to perform reliability assessments to plan for potential energy emergencies. "Regulated utilities must receive approval from state utility commissions to build out their capacity.... That alone can cause bureaucratic bottlenecks. .... The bureaucracy doesn’t stop there. If utilities or third parties want to build a power plant or transmission lines, they also need approval from the state commissions, municipalities and even landowners that would be affected." Much of the new demand growth needs faster access to electricity.
