Last Wednesday I went to my first TEDxSanDiego event. I learned a valuable lesson. I was there to watch my friend Stacey Lauren give a TED talk! Stacey is one of the most inspiring people I've ever met. Last year she said she wanted to give a TED talk and in less than 12 months she made it happen. How did she do that!!?? Stacey possesses a special skill that makes her extraordinary. The good news is that we can all cultivate it. Stacey's secret superpower is this: The gap between her saying she wants do something and her actually doing it is microscopic. She doesn't let resistance, self-doubt, and fear slow her down. She still feels all those things (she's the first to admit it), but she takes immediate action and doesn't let anything stop her. This is very different than how most people approach their goals. Many of us mere mortals say we want to do something, get all fired up about it, and then procrastinate for months (or years!). We let excuses and the busyness of life keep us from starting. We wait for the perfect time to start. We take the first "no" we hear as a sign we should do something else. Not Stacey. One of the most inspiring part of Stacey's TEDx journey is that she actually got rejected multiple times before securing her speaking spot. But she didn't give up. She was persistent, diligent, and kept taking bold action. After spending time with her last week, I'm certain that the most important skill we can cultivate is this: Start shrinking the gap between you saying you want to do something and you actually doing it! Stephen King says: “The scariest moment is always just before you start. After that, things can only get better.” Let's make today the moment that you start taking action on your biggest dreams. This year, I started an awesome new role. I'm a Facilitator and Leadership Coach for Braven and their Career Accelerator Program. Specifically, I lead a cohort of college students at San Francisco State University and help accelerate their career progression. Two tips that have made me especially successful in my facilitation: 1. Don't be afraid of silence. If you ask for sharing or feedback, and no one speaks right away, allow the silence to be there. -Keep breathing. -Create spaciousness for people to share. -Offer patience so those who may be slower to share can feel the invitation. Your comfort with silence will invite others to speak up. 2. Support participants in fully arriving. I start each session with a 2-3 minute guided meditation. This reason I do this: I hear from my students that they are sometimes overwhelmed by the volume of homework, studying required for exams, stress about their grades, and just not enough time in the day. Some of them also work nearly full time jobs in addition to being in school. This works well because: -Sometimes people are joining directly from their last class, and it's helpful for them to have a distinct end to the last one, and the beginning of mine. -Taking a pause in the middle of a busy day, especially at the end of the day can make a huge difference. -Calming the mind and guiding people to a relaxed, psychologically safe state enables them to be fully creative and optimally receptive to learning. Very excited (and a bit nervous if I'm honest!) to tell you about a workshop that I’m hosting in collaboration with Tiimo this week.   Tiimo is a visual planning app structured specifically for those of us with neurodivergent minds so I’m especially excited to be teaming up with them (or Tii-ming up, perhaps!). So, I’d love to invite you to ‘Redefining Success - finding your way in a non-linear career’ on Thursday, 17th October 2024 at 3pm (BST). In the workshop, we’ll be exploring: - Why switching things up can be great for your mental health ​- How to handle the ups and downs of a non-linear career ​- Tapping into your natural strengths and interests to stay engaged at work ​- Adapting to change and saying yes to new opportunities The workshop will be live and interactive (only as much as you would like it to be - no one will be forced to have their cameras on or share if you don’t want to, and there won’t be any break out rooms), you’ll leave with some resources to help you on your own work journey and you'll have the chance to ask any questions you might have about changing careers. 🔊OC Employers! 🧠 Did you know that nearly 6 million American’s are currently living with Alzheimer’s Disease? The number of those diagnosed here in Orange County has doubled in these last 10 years. Even if someone is not directly impacted by ALZ, chances are they know someone who is. Millions of caregivers are full time professionals, and the stress of balancing caregiving and work can significantly impact one's stress levels and overall well-being. Although these numbers are staggering, it illustrates to employers how vital it is to be strategic about available awareness resources and support offered to employees not only affected by dementia, but also interested in learning more about it. The Alzheimer’s Association offers FREE Education Programs and Awareness Trainings to local organizations in our community, and would love the opportunity to speak to your staff on one of the below topics. These programs are designed to support those affected by Alzheimer’s and other dementias, as well as those interested in brain health and caregiving. They cover a range of topics, including: • Healthy Living for Your Brain and Body • Effective Communication Strategies • Understanding Alzheimer’s and Dementia • Recognizing the 10 Warning Signs of Alzheimer’s • Managing Money: A Caregiver’s Guide to Finances • Responding to Dementia-Related Behaviors We can provide these programs virtually or in person for your staff, including any other community members who might benefit from these insights. Each session is available in 30- or 60-minute formats, offering flexibility to fit your schedule. To practice development delegation you need to start by clarifying expectations. At a minimum, you should clarify expectations around results. You can even clarify expected results on a spectrum. Consider situational leadership, is it important for you to: 1. Dictate the specific results? 2. Collaborate with your team members to align on the desired results? 3. Ask coaching questions to let your team member set the results using their own skills and experience? 4. Ask that your team members set the results and share them with you to align? Like anything in situational leadership, you will determine which options to choose above based on how skilled your team members are, how bought in they are, and how much time you have. If they have minimal to no experience you want to focus on option 1. If they are not bought-in focus on option 2. If they should be able to set the results on their own but need support pursue option 3. If they are ready to set them alone choose option 4. You can apply the same practice to determine the specific actions, behaviors, and processes of the work you are looking to delegate. #TechWalk is the community I never realized I needed. Over the past month, I've had the incredible opportunity to work alongside the visionary founder of this community, Christine Farrier Rosemin. Adding coaching to #TechWalk has been a transformative experience. Here's what we've been able to cover over this last month. 1️⃣ Connecting Walking to Positive Emotion We often discuss the need for dopamine, but what about oxytocin? Oxytocin, produced through trust and bonding, is essential for deepening personal and professional relationships. 2️⃣ Developing a Mindful Career. With the tech job market facing challenges, we've focused on key aspects of a mindful career: Environment: Reevaluating how your physical and work environment supports your growth. Emotion: Recognizing responsibilities and opportunities that foster a sense of purpose. Experience: Crafting narratives around your experiences to highlight strengths. Expansion: Identifying challenges that encourage professional growth. These elements allow us to make more mindful choices in our careers. 3️⃣ Self-Compassion in Chaotic Times Whether it's new leadership roles or career transitions, the importance of self-compassion cannot be overstated. Instead of succumbing to self-criticism, we've practiced self-compassion meditation. This practice helps: -Extend grace to ourselves and others -Mitigating stress and the fight-or-flight response. In a short time we've slowed down and gained more personal agency as a community. A little bit of practice to integrate personal and professional development Tomorrow, I'll lead a session on taking purposeful action in challenging times. QBQ! Musings: Let's Answer Our Phones Starting ... NOW. I’m not a call center or phone system expert, but gee whiz, it’s 2025 ... can we do better? I made a simple (ha!) call to Kaiser Permanente to request a prescription be mailed, as I'd ordered. I received a text saying it was now ready for PICK-UP. Let’s see what happened next … At every turn during a 14-minute "phone tree Hell" experience, while attempting to reach a real live flesh and blood human, I was warned that if I was having a “life-threatening or mental/drug crisis, to call 911.” Five times I heard that. Finally, by pure luck—I'm not sure I could do it again or tell you how to do it—I reached Chad, an actual pharmacist. I asked Chad if my non-urgent product could be mailed to me. His response? “Hmm, I think that can be done, but you’ll need to call the mail center to arrange it.” Aaaggghhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!! 😂 Automated phone tree systems are no longer novel or unique. What they really are is the antithesis of good #CustomerService. You'd think the organizational world would've figured that out by now. Maybe they don't care. 🤷‍♂️ Idea: Let's return to answering our phones, taking care of paying customers, and making the world less stressful.
