If We Focus On Creating a Great Customer Experience, Profit and Competition Will Take Care Of Themselves. One of the most thought-provoking discussions at T2RL was the conversation on the future of aviation between Vasu Raja, former CCO of American Airlines, and Richard Clarke, CEO T2RL. There are some points and questions from this dialogue as I interpret them, though they may come across as a bit inconsistent. Vasu Raja: "How are we going to generate enough revenue to cover growing costs? The fundamental business model needs changes, otherwise we risk creating a disaster." __ Vasu Raja: "Airlines, unlike tech companies, only change about 5% of top management every 20 years, whereas tech shifts 20% every 5 years. This long institutional memory could be holding us back." __ Vasu Raja: "We also have to remember: What are we missing for our customer? For travellers, we can’t spoil the experience of travel with the experience of transportation." __ Richard Clarke: " OTAs, are they friends or enemies?" __ Vasu Raja: "OTE have facilitated tonnes of things, and also break rules. Should OTAs and TMCs propose to airlines to sell the most profitable products?" __ Richard Clarke: "Is the airline industry still an interesting place to work?" There is this incident that I have to tell to make this topic real. One of my super smart colleagues, Dr. Franz Josef Weiper and I visited a Line Maintenance MRO a few years back to address the problem statement – they were getting battered daily with the request for more Line technicians to manage the growing demand across all their line stations. How can Ramco help determine the resource count and skills needed to manage the demand? We ran their data (airline arrivals/departures across all line stations, tasks, technician count, skills, and availability) through Ramco's in-memory optimization tool. The answer was an eye-opener and a game changer – after optimal loading of resources across all stations, it seems they not only didn’t need more resources, they actually had excess. Now, suddenly the problem statement changed from "how many more resources needed" to "how much more demand can they take", while improving their productivity, turnaround times, and customer satisfaction. It cannot get any more real than this for the topic of resource and supply chain constraints in the Aviation industry today. With the advent of AI, these insights can be even further enhanced to find more ways to do more with less. The future is bright!

In response to the introduction of the “Airport Gate Competition Act,” National Air Carrier Association President and CEO George Novak issued the following statement:   "NACA and its member airlines commend Senators Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) for introducing the Airport Gate Competition Act to increase airline competition by enhancing access to airport gates. These gates – in many cases under exclusive control of network airlines – are not being utilized for nearly half the day at 75 percent of the top 40 U.S. airports. NACA’s ultra-low-cost carriers (ULCCs) are ready and able to provide new or expanded service to many of these airports, but are effectively shut out of access to gates and other facilities like ticket counters and baggage claim areas." "This bipartisan, common-sense bill would require airports planning to use revenue from passenger facility charges to fund new terminals to ensure that no more than 50 percent of gates and other airport terminal facilities be exclusive to any one airline and that at least 25 percent of gates and facilities be available for common use by all airlines serving the airport. By removing restrictions to gate access, the bill will help drive down average fares and expand service options for consumers by facilitating new or expanded ULCC service. #CommercialAviation, which typically flies aircraft with over 100 seats, represents more than 80% of revenue seat miles flown and emissions generated in the aviation sector. However, we haven't seen much investment in breakthrough approaches for more the larger #aircraft that serve these operations. Investors have made big bets in breakthrough #aerospace technologies for smaller aircraft (e.g. #eVTOLS, #eSTOL and #hydrogen themes), which address less than 16% of aviation emissions and less than 10% of current aircraft. #SAF investments can help commercial #aviation move forward with #sustainability goals, but SAF is likely to cost 2-3X as much as JetA, which will create significant demand destruction and financing issues for airlines. #Boeing and #Airbus have explored breakthrough technologies for commercial aviation that would increase aircraft efficiency beyond what traditional tube and wing aircraft can achieve -- Boeing's X66 Truss Braced Wing concept for example. However, the only programs currently planned -- next generation tube and wing #aircraft -- will deliver gains that fall far short of the industry's needs to achieve its sustainability goals. The #BWB concepts in progress, of which JetZero is the most advanced, can help fill this gap in product development and sustainability for the most important part of the #airline business by cutting fuel consumption per RPM by 30-50%. SAF will continue to play an important role, which BWB concepts will accelerate by eliminating the trillions of dollars of incremental cost that would have put a primarily SAF based solution under immense pressure. In the end, the fuel savings tied to new equipment will help the industry achieve its sustainability goals while reducing costs and accelerating industry growth. That makes for a healthier industry going forward. Alaska Airlines has a strong history of pragmatic thought leadership in the aviation industry. With this investment they have led the industry towards an attractive future where a robust, profitable industry and sustainability have become mutually reinforcing goals that build on the industry's legacy as the world's most fuel efficient. large scale transportation system. Many investors focused in sustainability have not had the right combination of vision and pragmatism to take this type of step. Congrats to Alaska Airlines and JetZero on moving us in the right direction. #ancillaryrevenue hits new record at $148.4B, according to IdeaWorksCompany and its latest CarTrawler reivew. Ancillary revenue contributes a crucial 14.9% to #airline revenue across the globe. For individual #airlines, this contribution can range from a low of 2% to a high of 56.4%. The upward march of ancillary revenue has recovered from a severe pandemic-era drop. US is laying cornerstones for the next/new generation of aviation technology through the Federal Aviation Administration reauthorization act which includes strong support for the commercialization of electric and hybrid-electric aviation. This will certainly help OEMs like Archer Joby Aviation and BETA TECHNOLOGIES to bring their products to market. This brings a question whether Europe is also readily available to support the new comers in the same way as our partner across the Atlantic? Happy to hear your thoughts on this. During today's House Aviation Subcommittee hearing on Eliminating Bottlenecks: Examining Opportunities to Recruit, Retain, and Engage Aviation Talent. National Business Aviation Association Jo Damato, CAM reported She #workforce is a top concern for #businessaviation, which supports 1.2 million U.S. jobs and $247 billion in economic output. She pointed to the recent passage of the Federal Aviation Administration reauthorization, saying it helps remove barriers for #aviationcareer seekers, while expanding the industry’s workforce “#pipeline” and improving #training standards. Damato cited several measures in the FAA law that are aimed at #aviationworkforcedevelopment. Those measures – which reflect recommendations from the DOT’s Youth Access to American Jobs in Aviation Task Force, as well as guidance from a related government-industry group, the FAA’s Women in Aviation Advisory Board – include language to: --Build early awareness and engagement with young people; --Improve access to information about careers in #aviation and #aerospace; --Create a national strategic plan for #workforcedevelopment that connects existing programs; --Provide financial support to pursue training and education, and; --Address factors that negatively impact the #recruitment and #retention of #women and other #minorities. My opinion is It has now been two years since the Youth Task Force and Women in Aviation Advisory Board (WIAAB) submitted their recommendations with very little progress. I have a confession to make and it may surprise many of my friends and colleagues. I ❤️ Frontier Airlines They offer great fares with complete transparency, a growing network of popular destinations, pristine late model planes and awesome crews. While I do enjoy the benefits of million miler status on Delta and American, there's nothing like the value I receive from Frontier's GoWild all-you-can-fly pass. I'm spoiled, but not so spoiled that I can't sit in a standard seat for a few hours when it's only costing me $16. Their airport teams are some of the hardest working airline employees - obviously under pressure to enforce carry on bag limitations while trying to maintain an on time schedule. The only three wish list items for my Frontier Airlines travel are: 1) Please instruct passengers to stop listening to music and movies or making calls on speaker. And enforce this. 2) Please instruct deplaning passengers to stop charging up the aisle unless there’s a tight connection or a late arrival. 3) WiFi Otherwise, thank you Frontier Airlines for the vital, unique and under appreciated service you provide. #airlines #budgettravel #vacations

Addressing the Aviation Maintenance Technician Shortage: A Crucial Step for the Industry’s Future The aviation sector is on the road to recovery post-pandemic, but a significant challenge persists: a shortage of aviation maintenance technicians (AMTs). Current estimates suggest a shortfall of 12,000 to 18,000 AMTs, which could persist or even worsen over the next decade. Factors like an aging workforce, low career uptake, and rising passenger demand (IATA predicts 8.2 billion passengers by 2037) are contributing to this gap. Boeing’s 2021 Commercial Market Outlook indicates that 610,000 new AMTs will be needed globally through 2041, with the trade association ADS saying that there are currently 10,000 vacancies in the UK alone. To meet this demand, the industry must increase the number of trained AMTs by at least 20% above those already being trained. Strategies to address this could include: ✈️ Increasing financial compensation: Making the role more attractive by acknowledging the high skill and training required. ✈️ Diversifying recruitment efforts: Expanding marketing to underrepresented groups (currently, <10% of aviation and aerospace engineers are female, for example). ✈️ Mentorship programs: Leveraging the experience of current professionals to guide and inspire the next generation.
