On June 19th, Dr. Yunfei Zhao and Joseph O'Leary, showcased their cutting-edge research at the 2024 Advanced Reactor Safety Conference, held as part of the American Nuclear Society (ANS) Annual Meeting. Dr. Zhao presented a paper titled "Reducing the Maintenance Cost of Advanced Nuclear Reactors under Risk Constraints through Condition Monitoring, Probabilistic Risk Assessment, and Maintenance Optimization" at the 2024 Advanced Reactor Safety Conference, which was embedded within the 2024 ANS Annual Conference. The paper introduces a new method for nuclear system maintenance optimization that integrates the Markov decision process with probabilistic risk assessment. The method has the potential of greatly reducing the operation and maintenance cost of advanced reactors while ensuring that relevant safety requirements are met. Joe presented his paper entitled "Improving the Efficiency of Dynamic Probabilistic Risk Assessment with Monte Carlo Tree Search and Importance Sampling" at the 2024 Advanced Reactor Safety Conference embedded in the American Nuclear Society Annual meeting. His paper introduces a new sampling methodology for dynamic probabilistic risk assessment which reduces its computational cost. A New Era for Wind Power: NREL Cracks the Code on Sustainable Researchers at the U.S. Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory have made a groundbreaking advancement that could revolutionize wind energy. NREL’s newly developed #PECAN resin allows wind turbine blades to be chemically recycled and reused, offering a #sustainable solution to the growing issue of blade waste. Traditionally, wind turbine blades have a lifespan of around 20 years, with many ending up in landfills after decommissioning. Now, thanks to PECAN resin, made from biomass-derived sugars, these blades can be recycled in just six hours, providing a circular alternative that reduces environmental impact. This #bio-based material not only matches but exceeds the performance of conventional materials, proving that sustainability can go hand-in-hand with high performance. Additionally, the PECAN resin has been shown to be scalable for future manufacturing, making it a practical solution for the wind energy industry. NREL recently announced a notice of intent to release a request for proposals in fundamental aerodynamics R&D that will help industry design and develop cost-effective and reliable large wind turbines. The advanced research project agency (ARPA) of US Office of Nuclear Energy | U.S. Department of Energy released a request for proposals on the transmutation of nuclear waste. It clearly states the ambition to "transmute" long-lived nuclear waste using Accelerator Driven Systems (ADS) very similar to the Transmutex design. The ambition is noble and grand, to reduce the time frame of the entire US stockpile of nuclear waste from hundreds of thousands of years to about 300 years in just a few decades. Here is the stated goal: "ARPA-E seeks to make a truly transformative decrease to this time frame, seeking to enable the transmutation of the entirety of the U.S. commercial UNF stockpile within 30 years. This shifts the issue of UNF disposal from an intergenerational issue to an intragenerational one. " Congratulations to the DOE for this amazing and noble initiative.
