This week the top regulators and practitioners in the accounting industry gather in Washington D.C. for the annual AICPA Conference. Many remarks make industry headlines at the conference each year, but more headlines have come out from an interview that the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission Chief Accountant Paul Munter gave to Mark Maurer at the The Wall Street Journal. Many are and will point to the comments specific to private equity investing in #audit firms but what is worth noting and considering is his response to what are the "most troubling behaviors" that he has seen in the industry. The behaviors (many of which have been very public scandals) have been taking place at firms without private equity investment. Munter refers to these problematic behaviors arising at "a number of firms and in a number of jurisdictions". One could make the argument that these behaviors have been prevalent for many years now and are the result of the leadership and culture of the firms involved.
