AdAttributionKit: Unpacking Apple’s new ad attribution framework AAK unifies Apple’s various advertising attribution frameworks under a single umbrella product name and extends SKAdNetwork in meaningful ways, including with support for re-engagement and alternative app marketplaces. These are substantive improvements. But impediments to adoption remain: IP-based attribution is still widely viewed as a suitable alternative to Apple’s native iOS attribution framework, meaning that platform tools like Conversion APIs will take adoption priority.

Traditional AdTech is dying. 🚫 Ad blockers, privacy regulations, attribution issues, and market saturation all contribute to an increasingly painful experience for app users and publishers.  So, what should publishers do to maximize revenue (and minimize frustration) over the next 12 months?  The only approach that has a future is a consumer-first monetization strategy. The advertising market hit a major milestone number: $1 trillion USD. And is expected to outpace the overall GDP growth figure. However, it's a tale of two tiers: - Nearly growth is going to a small subset of AI-driven ad businesses who are expected to reap more than 50% of all ad revenue. That would include Google, Facebook, Amazon etc. - OG digital advertising is expected to be 72.9% of total advertising in 2025 - Streaming TV revenue is expected to grow by 19.3% while linear TV declines by 3.4%. Amazon Is Shutting Down Freevee Amazon is shutting down Freevee, its free, ad-supported video streaming service, which was launched under the  IMDb brand five years ago. Content will be absorbed under Prime Video & Amazon MGM Studios brand. Freevee will offer free content to non-Prime users in the U.S., U.K., Germany, and Austria under Prime Video's "Watch for Free" umbrella. Amazon's Prime Video ad launch in January sparked speculation about mothballing Freevee, despite previously denying a report of its shutdown in Q2 2024. Is anyone surprised? If you are, then you need help understanding Amazon. Amazon wants to utilize every space available for advertising. Freevee was an easy way to grow Amazon Prime Video membership by offering free content to customers who were initially unwilling to pay for Prime Video. Over 10 years ago, we initiated a partnership with Google where we had the keys to their most powerful advertising platform for display advertising demand for publishers called DoubleClick Ad Exchange. It was exclusive to very large websites or partners like MonetizeMore. As a result, we received a lot of demand from publishers to become a customer and get access to the best performance ad exchange in the industry. This partnership dramatically grew our business back in 2013.   In January 2014, our largest customer received a spam attack. One of their competitors sent a plethora of traffic that were meant to click on their ads multiple times with the purpose of getting them banned on Google. They were successful because this publisher was getting huge amounts of traffic and they sent such a huge attack that it created an investigation on our master account (MCM) with Google. About three weeks later, that investigation resulted in a whole master account ban. When you’re banned by Google, that means that they revoke all unpaid ad revenues. The unpaid ad revenues were all our revenues for December and January. That was the highest gross revenue months we had at that time. $2.2 million and 99% of our revenue for those months were revoked.   Since then we bounced back via injection of personal funds into the business to make sure everyone was still paid. We learned from this by implementing the below:   - AI driven invalid traffic detection and blocking tech we built in-house - Very stringent site screening (Over 100 checks) - Diversification of our revenue streams   As a result, we have grown the business sustainably and we strengthened our partnership with Google to become a Google Certified Publishing Partner (GCPP) for close to 10 years now.   We now help other GCPPs to help prevent MCM terminations, revenue clawbacks and help optimize their Google Health Scores. NBD, Chalice AI is included in Ad Age's "5 Biggest Ad Tech Stories of 2024"... ahead of Elon, antitrust, cookie whiplash and MFAs. AI FTW! "AI has made its way into every corner of the ad business: Ad agencies are partnering with generative AI platforms to build up their services; Google, Meta, TikTok and Amazon are creating automated ad products based on AI decision-making; and within ad tech, AI is increasingly being used to power programmatic ad campaigns. Demand-side platforms are developing GPTs—generative pre-trained transformers—which are based on the same large language model technology that powers OpenAI’s ChatGPT. The DSPs are trying to use the GPTs to help ad buyers plan campaigns, and eventually make most of the decisions in programmatic advertising. Some ad tech firms, such as Chalice AI, are experimenting with custom algorithms that brands can use to make smarter ad buys. Meanwhile, Google has expanded its AI campaigns called Performance Max and Demand Gen; Meta continues to push its Advantage+ platform; and Amazon redesigned its DSP this year with AI flourishes, including expanding its Performance+ program." Black-box automation systems like Advantage+ and PMax are designed to deploy the entirety of an advertiser's budget while meeting their performance targets. This creates the incentive for waste: a platform can balance high-value and low-value inventory to exhaust an advertiser's budget while delivering the requisite ROAS. How does this dynamic change in a recession? Advertisers will likely a) cut brand spend and b) shift budget to the largest, most dependable, and most sophisticated platforms. But to what degree do black-box automation campaigns scale? Far more low-value inventory exists than high-value inventory. With more money being allocated to the largest platforms' automation tools -- placing more demand on their high-value inventory -- can these platforms continue to deliver acceptable performance while consuming additional budget? What's the upper limit?

Packed house for #ATSL24 and a great discussion between Jeff Green, CEO of The Trade Desk and our own Ciarán O'Kane of FPC and ExchangeWire. The discussion touched on the lack of VC participation in AdTech (despite being a $1 Trillion addressable market). “Generalist VCs avoided AdTech because it’s complex. They often don’t understand why they’d win or lose”. This summed up exactly why FirstPartyCapital exists. A $1T+ complex sector needs specialists to fund innovation, provide deeper DD, illuminating context, access to networks and relevant portfolio support. Over time we hope this provides a stronger signal to generalist VCs and PEs.
