Getting more for less...or less for less? In recent years, there has been a noticeable trend of decreasing salaries and rates for communications professionals. This morning, I came across a contract role for a communications specialist at a prominent software company in Washington offering $25 an hour for someone with 3-5 years of experience and a mandate to lead projects and drive strategy. Interestingly, a local restaurant chain in the same area pays $26 an hour for fully trained staff – a marginal difference that raises questions about fair compensation. Beyond the numbers, it's essential to consider the value of experience and expertise in any field. Regardless of industry, individuals with several years of experience deserve compensation that aligns with their skills and knowledge. Zip Recruiter's average communications specialist salary of $36 per hour bears this out. Experience, training, and the overall context are crucial factors when determining fair compensation. It's important to recognize the worth of professionals based on their contributions and skills, ensuring that they are appropriately compensated for their expertise. I understand the need of companies to use their budgets effectively, but at some point the tradeoff on that savings can be detrimental. In the communications space, a poorly thought through strategy will mean the difference between success and failure. Something that's popped up in a few conversations this week is what #GenerativeAI will mean for marketers (especially content creators). There's a lot of info out there and I see most falling into one of two opinion camps - either that GenAI will replace all marketers (poorly) and mean the downfall of marketing, or that it will revolutionize marketing in the very best way. The truth is...we don't know yet. We can speculate (and wild speculation is always fun), or we could focus on what we know right now. And what I know is this: ⌨ If you're a poor writer, GenAI can't help you because most stuff currently written using these tools reads like it is written by these tools. It uses awkward phrasing (GenAI tools like the word 'thrilling' more than any human) and might not have market or technical expertise. It can also hallucinate info or pull insight from common or competitive sources. ⌨ For good or great writers, GenAI can have a positive impact in many ways, acting as a sounding board to create an outline, creating a (very) rough first draft, and more. If you're resource-constrained, this is incredibly valuable and will save time because for many, it's faster to edit a document than to create something from scratch (and then edit it). THAT's the 🗝 - right now, any content created using GenAI requires editing, and in many cases, heavy-handed/extensive editing. Its maximum value is in its use by talented folks in a process it cannot replicate by itself. Will this change? Absolutely. How? I don't think we know yet. What I do know is that I've seen some great stuff and have grown some skills using GenAI for basic things like identifying sources for research or suggesting an itinerary for our next family vacation. But it has significant limits and it takes time and resources to find the right prompts and processes to extract value. ➡ I'm fascinated by this topic, so if you have great tips/tricks or fav tools you think make you more productive as a marketer, share away!

Everyone knows I’m a tech geek. Gadgets, apps, tools—you name it, I’ve probably tinkered with it. But this one? It’s got my brain in a pickle. Pickle.ai wants to create a digital 'you' to sit in on your web conference calls. Their pitch? Submit a five-minute training video of yourself, and 24 hours later, your avatar is ready to fake it while you’re sipping a margarita in a hammock. Sounds like a dream (or a dystopia). But let’s be real: this won’t work in most scenarios. Presenting to the board? Nope. Reporting to your boss? Risky. A 1:1 with a colleague? Awkward. Here’s what’s even funnier: no one stares straight at the camera for the entire call. And don’t get me started on how our voices change depending on whether we’re lying, standing, or even wearing pants. But the irony? This tool might succeed not because it’s flawless but because it scratches a very human itch: the desire to be anywhere but that meeting. GenX: bad news. We're getting overlooked again. 🤦‍♀️ According to new research by TrustRadius and Pavilion, most of the buying power in B2B today (over 75%) identify as Millennials or GenZ. Man...I thought we were in charge for a minute there, but I guess it's already over. 🌄 The fact that we are a small generation isn't helping. Anyway, a casualty of this is that the likelihood of considering 'challenger brands' and going against the status quo is shrinking right along with the GenX buying power. Going against the grain is cool for us...not so much for the younger folks. So what are challenger brands to do? I spoke with the amazing Allyson Havener from TrustRadius about this. She's got some great data and ideas for keeping challenger brands (and the generation that loves them) in the running. Check out this clip. “Too much detail makes you look junior” – Christine Heckart A few weeks ago, I read a post by Carilu Dietrich about how CMOs should approach board meetings. It sounds simple, but it requires practice to master the balance between high-level insights and enough detail to be clear, concise, and strategic. When I moved from sales to marketing in 2016, I was overflowing with product and market knowledge. Without realising it, I’d dive too deep into features and benefits, losing sight of the bigger picture. I thought that providing extensive detail would make me credible. But over time, I learnt that it’s not about knowing everything—it’s about turning that knowledge into actionable insights. This is also what separates a junior from a senior. 1️⃣ Ask yourself: Can you summarise without losing quality? 2️⃣ Listen to how your CXO or senior leaders communicate. 3️⃣ Ask for feedback from those you consider strong communicators. 4️⃣ Proper Preparation Prevents Poor Performance. The more you practice, the more natural it becomes. To this date, I sometimes still go too deep on certain things due to my love for data. Tl;dr: In 2024, people appreciate reminders! 😀 I'm the person who's always worried that he's bugging others too much and/or is sending too many follow-ups or reminders. 👍 And there may be times that I *really* am the person who pushes too hard but I'm realizing more and more that in a world where people get hundreds of emails, messages, multi-platform pings, etc. each day, they often appreciate (not just "don't resent" but appreciate) people who send reminders and follow-up on messages they may have missed or forgotten. 😎
