The Economic Development Corp. Michigan City and City of Michigan City are teaming up with Better City Grant Writers to find grants. The team is seeking grants that bolster economic development and community-centered efforts and initiatives. “By putting a knowledgeable team into place, we are moving forward our capacity-building efforts,” Michigan City Mayor Angie Nelson Deuitch said in a press release [https://lnkd.in/g8sAMg2z]. “There are grant opportunities out there for the city, EDCMC and our community organizations, but it is challenging to not only find them, but also go through the application process.” The city’s primary goal is to find funding for public projects. Better City Grant Writers is an economic development advisory firm. The firm works with communities to acquire resources for impactful projects and plans. “From small local grants to multimillion-dollar federal programs, we’ve helped our clients obtain over $100 million in funds, driving projects that fuel local progress,” Trina Kittleson, Better City Grant Writers economic development advisor, said. The EDCMC team sees the partnership as an avenue to fund items outlined in the Vibrant Michigan City initiative. The agenda includes entrepreneurship, creative placemaking, youth activities, business corridor development and childcare/early learning initiatives. “Navigating the grant application process takes time and talents that are time-consuming,” Clarence Hulse, EDCMC executive director, said. “The Better City partnership allows us to continue working toward our top priorities while knowing we could have the funds to fulfill our goals.” Kittleson added that grants allow communities to bridge funding gaps and pursue initiatives that would otherwise be out of reach. “These funds unlock the potential for economic growth and improved quality of life for residents,” Kittleson said.  The Economic Development Corp. Michigan City works to grow and attract new industry and business to the community. It also aims to strengthen existing business. Today's The City Club of Cleveland forum provided a thought-provoking discussion of leadership, impact, and philanthropy, as Executive Directors from the four local organizations which recently received MacKenzie Scott gifts gathered to discuss leveraging these funds for community change. There was a lot of wisdom up on that stage. Ms. Scott's "yield giving" concept of adding value by giving up control was an interesting topic. From the leadership standpoint, giving up control to talented team members allows the organization to flourish and become more sustainable. From the philanthropic perspective, once donors have vetted the organization and trust the recipient with their gift, they should step back and allow the magic to happen. This is huge! Cleveland is growing up. Good work by The Greater Cleveland Partnership for making the necessary connections between project owners and project managers. We speak often about being progressive and working with people from diverse backgrounds helps keep the city progressing in the right direction. I’ve found that including people who come from different backgrounds opens you up to diverse ideas and solutions you may not have thought of previously. Individuals from different cultural backgrounds bring unique perspectives to important initiatives, affecting city planning, workforce, education, and economic development projects. When included in its infrastructure, the impact of diversity, equity, and inclusion could be monumental for our culture and life-changing for both our native and international communities. Simply put, diversity is a superpower. Including our international community in infrastructure projects can be a powerful tool in Cleveland’s toolbelt, potentially speeding up progress. If we take building a more diverse and equitable economy seriously, we could possibly get to where we need to be quicker.    It’s essential for the city to ensure that those who want to share their unique skills, experience, and passion can contribute to our collective lives. This is a great city, but we have old problems here—some that get more complex the longer we wait to solve them. Our problems require diverse perspectives and creative solutions. If we want to be a 15-minute city, then we need to include international individuals; only then we can truly build equity and make this city more attractive to newcomers and the next generation.

Over the last 18 months, we've been exploring ways to reduce barriers to high-quality mental health supports for young people, especially those growing up in more vulnerable situations. One common scenario: a parent or teenager shares a mental health concern with their pediatrician or nurse (one of the most trusted professionals in their lives) who then hands them a piece of paper with the contact information of therapists who may/may not take their insurance and may/may not have any availability. The result -- a lengthy gap between raising a flag and the young person receiving supports, if at all. Along the way, we learned of TEAM UP, an evidence-based model to integrate mental health services directly into community health clinics that has been growing throughout Massachusetts. In a new partnership, we are excited to work with the TEAM UP Scaling & Sustainability Center to explore the feasibility of brining this model to support young people growing up in New York City. #MentalHealth #IntegratedCare
