According to Russian state-owned media, the assailant reportedly used Strava fitness tracker data to carry out the attack. Surprisingly, Rzhitsky maintained a public profile with the fitness tracker Strava tied to his real name, using data from his GPS-enabled Garmin Fenix 6X smartwatch to catalog running and cycling routes which regularly passed through a park where an unknown assailant ultimately shot him.  The profile even contained publicly accessible pictures of Rzhitsky before and after workouts and even his shoe type, providing a valuable resource to the assassin for positive identification.

The agency's director resigned, but what does this hack mean for us? 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐈𝐭 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬: OPM is like the government's HR department. They handle background checks for sensitive positions. The data stolen is now in the hands of whoever hacked it. From 2009 to June this year, I worked at NIH and needed a Public Trust clearance, which required filling out form SF-85P. This form included: - Personal details: name, address, DOB, SSN - Physical traits: height, weight, hair color, eye color - Family info: spouse’s and parents’ details - Residence and employment history - References and educational background - Foreign trips and interactions - Financial and criminal records Several months into my job, an agent interviewed me about my background and connections, checking for potential security risks. It was thorough. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐀𝐟𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐡: After the hack, OPM offered affected individuals 18 months of credit monitoring. An email from Acting Deputy Secretary Mary K. Wakefield reassured us about increased security measures. But is that enough? 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐢𝐠𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐏𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞: The stolen data goes beyond credit card numbers. It includes detailed personal histories, relationships, and even biometrics. This information can’t be simply reissued. The implications are severe, especially for those with high-level security clearances. This hack has exposed our most sensitive information, potentially to foreign adversaries. The repercussions are vast and lasting. Did you know that Marine Corps Logistics Integrated Information Solutions’ (LI2S-MC) Global Combat Support System--Marine Corps (GCSS-MC) now offers additional disadvantaged/disconnected capabilities that support users in disconnected modes? Here are four ways you can make updates in GCSS-MC without having a great internet connection. Desktop Integrated Framework (DIF) offers Excel-based forms that allow Marines to input minimal information needed to create/update Service Requests and easily download/upload to GCSS-MC on a low-bandwidth/high-latency environment. Denied, Degraded, Intermittent, and Low Bandwidth Marine Corps Logistics (DDIL MC LOG) uses a web and mobile application, cloud server, and Forward-Deployed Edge Servers to provide Marines with access to a set of GCSS-MC capabilities in a disadvantaged/disconnected environment.  Mobile Field Service (MFS) allows Marines to execute a subset of maintenance and supply functionality in “austere network connectivity” environments via a mobile application. When users cannot connect to GCSS-MC or if network connectivity is not robust enough to enable active transactional data entry, MFS stores data until network services are available. Email Mobile Query (EMQ) enhances the capabilities of GCSS-MC system for Marine Corps units by utilizing simple text email exchange using a .mil account. A user can initiate a query with one of 13 predefined seeded commands and receive an email with the requested information. The Contingency Location Operations Rehearsal (CLOR) 2024 took place at the Combat Readiness Training Center from June 24 - 28, sending close to 100 Airmen across the country to practice for future deployments. During the CLOR, Airmen focused on implementing the Agile Combat Employment (ACE) concept through practicing command and control of dispersed force elements in a simulated wartime scenario. The CLOR also presented an opportunity for the United States Air Force to integrate new technologies.
