This is important for #communications pros and our subject matter experts to remember. An interview is a conversation not a rote question asked, prepared answer given. Using talking points rather than scripted answers is more effective for a SME and makes for a better interview. Unfortunately that path isn’t taken as often as it should be.

Here's how you become a media source I've worked in public relations for 33 years and and helped hundreds of people become a trusted and relied upon media source. It's much easier than you'd think. It's also an excellent way to become known as a credible authority by your target audience. These are the basics: Prepare. Be honest. Be available. Stay on topic. Know your stuff. Be clear and concise. Show your personality. Understand the audience. Tell them interesting stories. You don't need special knowledge or a PR agency to be successful. What media want are experts they can trust who will make their job easier. They appreciate people who can clearly communicate complex ideas. If you're engaging and personable that's a bonus because it makes their coverage more interesting and appealing. If you've always wanted to be the go to expert in your field but don't know how to make it happen, consider this simple strategy. Become a media source. It's a shortcut to credibility.

PR pro-tip: if you do NOT want to be known as someone else’s puppet, then refrain from telling people you are NOT that someone else’s puppet. When the inevitable media publicity comes, guess what impression is made in the public mind? This is a common misconception in communication, the assumption that named denials using the word NOT ‘X’ are somehow effective. There are some “media interview non-negotiables” that every good PR practitioner knows. We should do a better job of teaching executives to understand them, too. ⚖️ Here are a few of mine: 🚫 We can’t ask to see the reporter’s interview questions in advance. 🛑 We can’t vet a story before it’s published. That’s a no-go. ❌ We can’t ask to remove quotes or sections of an interview if an executive misspoke. ✅ We can only request changes to a story for factual errors. Why are these non-negotiable? They protect our – and the organization’s – relationship with the reporter. 🤝 Some outlets and reporters have publicly shamed companies who make these requests. How can we best manage the outcome? 📋 Prepare thoroughly. 🕵️ Work with PR pros. We research the reporters and outlets, anticipate questions, and prepare executives for interviews. 🔍 Operate that everything said is “on the record.” Don’t say it if you don’t want to see it in the story. 🎯 Media training isn’t a “nice to have”—it’s essential to success.
